Book excerpt: Based on the 2002 conference Fertility: The Current South African Issues of Poverty, HIV/AIDS, and Youth emanating from the partnership between the Department of Social Development, the South African Regional Poverty Network (SARPN), and the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), this book examines the underlying link between fertility and socio-economic development. The complex features in the current fertility trends in post-apartheid South Africa are examined, including the demographic fertility profile of South Africa's population, determinants of fertility-related behaviours such as sexual initiation in the context of AIDS, contraceptive use, and the broader regional fertility issues.

Book Analysis of Changing Rural Women s Reproduction Behavior Patterns in South Africa

Download or read book Analysis of Changing Rural Women s Reproduction Behavior Patterns in South Africa written by Zanele Mfono and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2008-12-31 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a description of the patterns of change in rural women's reproductive behaviour in South Africa over a period of 17 years extending from 1987-9 to 2004. The analyses were informed by the Programme of Action that was set out at the 1994 International Cairo Conference on Population and Development. The Programme of Action has a 20-year implementation time period, and the year 2004 was halfway through the 20 years. The year 2004 is also 30 years since the introduction of South Africa's National Family Planning Programme in 1975, which advanced the health rationale for fertility regulation. It is also twenty years after the introduction of the Population Development Programme in 1985, which emphasized the demographic rationale for fertility regulation. It is finally the seventh year after the introduction of the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act in 1997, which legalized pregnancy terminations under prescribed conditions, with emphasis on women's rights to choice. Five of South Africa's nine provinces, which have more than 50 per cent of their populations living in tribal areas, were included in the analyses.

Book Recent Fertility Trends in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Recent Fertility Trends in Sub Saharan Africa written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertility rates and population growth influence economic development. The marked declines in fertility seen in some developing nations have been accompanied by slowing population growth, which in turn provided a window of opportunity for rapid economic growth. For many sub-Saharan African nations, this window has not yet opened because fertility rates have not declined as rapidly there as elsewhere. Fertility rates in many sub-Saharan African countries are high: the total rate for the region is estimated to be 5.1 births per woman, and rates that had begun to decline in many countries in the region have stalled. High rates of fertility in these countries are likely to contribute to continued rapid population growth: the United Nations projects that the region's population will increase by 1.2 billion by 2050, the highest growth among the regions for which there are projections. In June 2015, the Committee on Population organized a workshop to explore fertility trends and the factors that have influenced them. The workshop committee was asked to explore history and trends related to fertility, proximate determinants and other influences, the status and impact of family planning programs, and prospects for further reducing fertility rates. This study will help donors, researchers, and policy makers better understand the factors that may explain the slow pace of fertility decline in this region, and develop methods to improve family planning in sub-Saharan Africa.

Book Fragmented Families Poverty and Women s Reproductive Narratives in South Africa

Download or read book Fragmented Families Poverty and Women s Reproductive Narratives in South Africa written by Kammila Naidoo and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragmented Families addresses a central question in the demographic debates on poverty and fertility transition in southern Africa:. In what ways do women's recurrent encounters with poverty serve to shape their sexual unions, social relationships and reproductive practices? The book focuses on the lives of a group of mothers and daughters from fifteen families in a demarcated part of the Winterveld area in South Africa, and draws attention to historical, socio-cultural, political and economic concerns in order to place in context or make sense of reproductive dynamics and family life at the micro-level. Vignettes, drawn from fieldwork, highlight the particularities of the area: the persistence of historical tensions, diverse livelihoods and complex gender relationships. The intergenerational stories of the women suggest that they live with immense and increasing adversity and that strategies to contend with them sometimes include attempts to assert control over sexual encounters and reproductive outcomes. The book contributes to a continuing debate on how changing socio-economic conditions could influence prospects for and the nature of fertility transition in African countries. The study concurs with alternative arguments that shifts toward lower levels of fertility might be due, in certain contexts, to experiences of severe hardship rather than favourable economic circumstances. Instead of seeking security and risk-aversion through bearing many children the response of indigent women in this area has been largely to resist reproduction, at particular stages of their lives, whilst using sexual relationships and child-bearing as strategies to manipulate and secure resources. In reflecting on methodological approaches, the book draws attention to the limitations of survey research in efforts to elicit 'accurate' representations of reproductive behaviour and fertility preferences, and emphasises the usefulness of more engaged, qualitative and long-term fieldwork endeavours in building substantive insights on women's familial and reproductive lives.

Book Fertility Transition and Stalling in the Face of Socioeconomic Progress and HIV AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Fertility Transition and Stalling in the Face of Socioeconomic Progress and HIV AIDS in Sub Saharan Africa written by Catherine Elaine Varner and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertility transition, a phenomenon of lowering fertility rates after significant socioeconomic progress, is of great concern to sub-Saharan Africa as a means of curbing dramatic increases in population in the region. Many sub-Saharan African countries are experiencing fertility stalling, however, meaning the total fertility rate (TFR) in these countries is failing to decrease and may be increasing once again. This paper addresses the stalling exclusive to sub-Saharan Africa and attempts to find key socioeconomic, economic, and cultural explanations that may lead to solutions for reinitiating fertility decline in sub-Saharan Africa. Past literature has motivated three approaches to research in this field. First, the paper will examine fertility transition and stalling based on socioeconomic development indicators using data from the Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). Through the use of multivariate regression analyses at the national, urban/rural, and regional levels, this section will determine socioeconomic factors that influence changes in fertility decline between consecutive DHS surveys in order to better understand how to reinitiate fertility decline in stalling areas. The second approach will address a specific issue to sub-Saharan Africa that may explain its unique fertility trends--the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Although the exact impact of HIV/AIDS on fertility and fertility decisions is yet unknown in the current literature, this section uses a multivariate regression analysis to link adult HIV prevalence to changes in fertility. The third approach will use a recent 2008 Ghana DHS survey to conduct a case study of fertility at the individual level in this country. Ghana used to be experiencing stalling fertility, but as of the 2008 DHS survey, fertility decline has resumed in this region. This section will explore women's age, education level, ethnicity, and type of residence to find possible influences on the number of children ever born per woman.

Download or read book Prenatal Care written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prenatal care programs have proven effective in improving birth outcomes and preventing low birthweight. Yet over one-fourth of all pregnant women in the United States do not begin prenatal care in the first 3 months of pregnancy, and for some groupsâ€"such as black teenagersâ€"participation in prenatal care is declining. To find out why, the authors studied 30 prenatal care programs and analyzed surveys of mothers who did not seek prenatal care. This new book reports their findings and offers specific recommendations for improving the nation's maternity system and increasing the use of prenatal care programs.
