Some of its major dimensions include - the level of economic growth, level of education, level of health services, degree of modernisation, status of women, level of nutrition, quality of housing, distribution of goods and services, and access to transportation and communication. In Arunachal Pradesh, the progress of socio-economic development among tribal population is not uniform. Development has both positive and negative implications on society and people. In this framework, the present paper examines the socio-economic development processes of Nyishis, numerically largest tribe, inhabiting in five districts of Arunachal Pradesh. It tries to look at the role of factionalism and faction politics in the implementation of development interventions in Nyishi tribal village, called Hiya. It also focuses on the type of change that they have experienced with the implementation of different schemes by both Governmental and Non-governmental agencies.

Book The Socio Economic Development of Nyishi People Through Tribal Art and Handicraft Productions in Arunachal Pradesh

Download or read book The Socio Economic Development of Nyishi People Through Tribal Art and Handicraft Productions in Arunachal Pradesh written by Tame Ramya (Tarh) and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the contribution of tribal art and handicraft productions to the socioeconomic development of Nyishi tribal people in the central part of Arunachal Pradesh. These skills which have greatly helped in shaping the social, cultural and economic landscape of the Nyishi people are so vital that cultural manifestations, traditional rites and rituals would have been virtually impossible without products like costumes, gongs, and other traditional artefacts made by tribal artisans. These products of arts have remained a veritable source of income and have been very instrumental in poverty reduction because they are sold within their localities and also exported to the Diaspora. Though arts and handicrafts meet the socio-economic, cultural and political needs of the Nyishi, the skills are threatened by environmental changes and technological advancements as well as the wide-ranging preference for imported substitute items which are recently affecting the local skills of the Nyishi tribal people. The paper calls for instant shield of these artistic works before they vanish in the wake of soaring competition otherwise the people will have nothing in their hand for cultural exchanges, tourism, encouraging future generations of artistic innovations and upholding the Nyishi cultural heritage.

Book Inequality Poverty and Development in India

Download or read book Inequality Poverty and Development in India written by Utpal Kumar De and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the fulfillment of two Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), namely poverty and inequality, in the Indian subcontinent. It examines the complex interplay among development, inequality and poverty in relation to corruption, environmental resource management, agricultural adjustment to climate change and institutional arrangements, with a special focus on the Northeastern region of the country. The topics covered offer a blend of theoretical arguments and empirical data with regard to the three main themes of the book, while also providing agricultural and environmental perspectives. The book also provides guidelines for policy initiatives for harnessing the region’s potential in the areas of industry, trade, sustainable use of mineral, forest and other natural resources, nature-based tourism through proper infrastructure development, and resolving land issues to achieve inclusive development. In addition to introducing some new questions on the development-ethnic conflict interface, it uses sophisticated tools such as the Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition method in consumption expenditure to show the endowment, and return to endowment effects; and techniques like spatial correlation-regression to analyze regional variation, co-integration, vector autoregression, the panel data technique and the adaptation index to climate change, to understand socio-economic complexities and the effect of the concerned variables on entrepreneurship and human development. The book offers a timely contribution to our understanding of major MDGs and highlights their successes and failures. It also includes analytical frameworks that are key to future policy initiatives. Further, it disseminates approaches and methods that improve livelihoods and standards of living through poverty reduction and promoting inclusive development along with sustainable utilization of available natural resources. Putting forward various ideas for creating a more sustainable future, it inspires and encourages readers to pursue further studies to address the gaps that still remain.
