Book An Investigation Into the Economic Determinants of Fertility

Download or read book An Investigation Into the Economic Determinants of Fertility written by Robert Allen Kohl and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1984 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to identify those economic factors that are most relevant to the decision of optimum family size. Using techniques pioneered by Gary S. Becker and his associates at Chicago, the author constructs a model of family welfare maximization, in which satisfaction is derived from Child Services and Living Standard. Given changes in such factors as family status, urbanization, parents' education and combined income, he proceeds to identify traditional income and substitution effects, effects resulting from shifts in preference patterns, and finally, effects attributable to various stochastic factors. The model is tested using cross-sectional data (county) from three U.S. regions at various stages of economic progress in 1970. In this way, the importance of economic factors in planning family size can be ascertained.

Download or read book Fertility in Urban Ethiopia written by Fanaye Tadesse and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most developing countries are faced with high population growth that strongly undermine their achievements in economic growth. These high population growth rates are often sustained by high fertility. Hence, fertility is considered to be the most important component of population dynamics, playing a major role in determining the size and the overall structure of populations in developing countries. If developing countries like Ethiopia are to achieve lower population growth, effective policies should be designed to bring fertility rate to a desirable level. This calls for the need to understand the underlying factors that determine the fertility decision of households at a micro level. Using count data models, this book presents a detailed analysis of the factors that determine fertility in urban Ethiopia. Panel and cross- sectional household data are analyzed using appropriate econometric tools. The analysis presented in this book presents population policy directions needed to bring about a low population growth rate through reduced fertility.

Book Population Growth and Socioeconomic Progress in Less Developed Countries

Download or read book Population Growth and Socioeconomic Progress in Less Developed Countries written by Peter Hess and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-10-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study examines fertility rates and their trends and determinants in less-developed countries by testing an empirical, interdisciplinary model of the fertility transition. In light of the current official position of the United States on population and development, the policy implications of the study are timely. According to some experts, interrupting the spiral of rapid growth and attendant economic and ecological deterioration now rivals nuclear disarmament in importance on the international agenda. Among the questions investigated include: Are there identifiable traits for developing nations that have reduced fertility? Has development become the best contraceptive? Have some development strategies been more conducive to lowering fertility? Do family planning programs have significant impacts on fertility?
