This study looks at the socioeconomic background of individual women and draws a correlation between them and the characteristics of their nearest source of family planning. The study assesses the importance of the socioeconomic background and the availability, price, and quality of services on contraceptive use and fertility. In 1969, Ghana was among the first Sub-Saharan African countries to adopt a population policy. Today, the average distance to a source of family planning is still about three miles. Population and fertility growth rates are high, and contraceptive use is low. The results suggest that raising levels of female schooling will also raise contraceptive use and lower female fertility, particularly in rural areas. However, the distances between facilities and related service centers remain a binding constraint on contraceptive use among those in the sample. The study also found no consistent effect on the demand for contraception or on fertility when measuring the quality of services.

Book excerpt: A study examined the issues and experiences of 89 women teachers, head teachers, and girls in and out of school in two contrasting Ghanaian cultural contexts. Data were collected via life history interviews, analyzed, and presented around three domains: culture of the home; relationship between culture and the economy, and culture of the school. Findings indicated that the home domain was shaped by issues of kinship, descent, and the practice of fostering. Cultural values of elders, attitudes toward knowledge, women's role in society, and expectations of the economic value of schooling influenced girls' educational experiences. The economic domain operated at two levels. At the macro level, Ghana exemplified the impact of structural adjustment policies on marginalized people now facing increased educational and health service costs. At the micro level of the home and extended family, the girl was often the sole breadwinner needing to develop coping strategies to balance school with employment. In the culture of the school, many children did or learned little of value. Issues of attitude to knowledge, teaching methods, and language policy constrained reform efforts. The teacher's life was hard; many perceived their profession as having low status. Positive school experiences for the child included being well taught in literacy and numeracy skills, seeing successful women teachers as role models, and avoiding excessive corporal punishment. Book excerpt: Abstract: The impacts of social network on the adoption of modern contraception are investigated using panel survey from Ghana. The data used in this paper were collected in six communities in southern Ghana. Women of reproductive age were interviewed in eight rounds over a five-year period (from late 1998 until early 2004). An analytic model using the contraceptive calendar data (n=35,366 woman-month contributed by 870 women) generated estimates to reveal the power of social network measures to predict the use of modern contraception in Southern Ghana. After controlling for the unobserved woman-specific factors through fixed-effects models, the social network measures still have their power in predicting contraceptive use. Related social diffusion measures are also taken into account including mass media exposure and geographic mobility. Based on the analysis of these results, I conclude that social learning and social influence are primarily two ways through which social networks affect modern contraceptive use.

Book excerpt: Adolescent fertility tends to be valued and sanctioned in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa when parents have had adequate ritual or training preparation for adulthood and the child has a recognized father. Young women and adolescents who conceive and bear children within this context are widely accepted by society; those who conceive outside of marriage, however, are strongly condemned by society. Over the past 2-3 decades, most African countries have successfully raised their levels of education. Girls and women are increasingly privy to formal school education and training in trade apprenticeships, domestic service, and ritual initiation which had otherwise been denied in the past. These factors, combined with declining menarche in a few areas, and changing economic opportunities, law, and religion make it more difficult to define the exact date of entry into marriage. Many girls are taking advantage of these changing circumstances and their opportunities to obtain educations and resist early marriage and cildbearing. While defying the traditional entry into early marriage, many young women do not, however, refrain from engaging in sexual activities. Pregnancies to unwed mothers are thereby on the rise and may constitute the most profound change observed in the social context of adolescent fertility on the continent. Once pregnant, many women find themselves shut out by family planning programs and prenatal clinics which serve only married women. This paper ultimately concludes that the social context of adolescent childbearing has an effect on the outcome for mother and child which is as important as the physiological maturity of the mother.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to examine the determinants of contraceptive use among women ages 15-49 of childbearing age (WCA) and to describe the compositional and processual changes that have taken place in Cameroon between 1991 and 2004. The study constituted a sample size of 3,871 and 10,656 15 to 49 year old women of childbearing from 1991 and 2004 Cameroon Demographic and Health Survey datasets respectively. Regression results confirmed that there was considerable support for the hypotheses in 1991 and 2004 except for age at first marriage which was significant but contradictory to the direction proposed in the hypothesis. Compositional changes were found to have occurred between 1991 and 2004 with the following variables: audio or visual media, income, married, number of children, older, other forms, primary, Regions 1 to 4, residence, and secondary education, while Christian, income, married, other forms of relationships, old, primary, and residence showed processual changes during the same period. Only levels of education showed compositional as well as effect changes when the variables were decomposed. The study confirmed that social, cultural, political, and legal determinants affect modern contraceptive use. The study also confirmed that modernization & human capital have influenced modern contraceptive use in Cameroon from 1991 to 2004. Unlike age at first marriage, income, place of residence, and education, supported the hypotheses of the study. Lastly, the study confirmed that there have been compositional and processual changes in Cameroon from 1991 to 2004.
