Book Money Struggles and City Life

Download or read book Money Struggles and City Life written by Jane I. Guyer and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 2002 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the operations of the popular economy and social life of southern Nigerian people under the incoherent conditions that followed Nigeria's first currency devaluation in 1986. It describes in detail the institutional and cultural innovations that fostered local economic activity and strengthened social groupings. The book questions standard views of either chaos or stagnation in the African popular economy under autocratic rule and incoherent policy. It shows how over 100 million people continued to make a living and maintain high levels of equanimity and productivity even in the face of chronic turbulence. Despite economic challenges, regrouping, institutional innovation and cultural elaboration did take place, often in ways that reforged the relationship between formal and informal economic practices and among local, regional, and global economies. The book's case studies, taken together, identify distinct patterns and directions of growth at a time when many observers thought that chaos seemed the most likely outcome. This is an important contribution to the literature on the social history of globalization and to interdisciplinary analyses of local social, cultural, and political economic systems.

Book Demanding Good Governance

Download or read book Demanding Good Governance written by Mary McNeil and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-06-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accountability is the cornerstone of good governance. Unless public officials can be held to account, then critical benefits associated with good governance, such as social justice, poverty reduction and development remain elusive. The impacts of non-responsive and unaccountable governance are perhaps most harshly felt by the citizens of Africa, where corruption and governance failures are broadly acknowledged as a principal obstacle to the achievement Over the past decade, a range of social accountability practices such as participatory budgeting, independent budget analysis, participatory monitoring of public expenditure and citizen evaluation of public services have been experimented with in many Africa countries. Their outcomes and lessons have, thus far, received little attend and documentation. This volume aims to make a contribution towards filling this gap by describing and analyzing a selection of social accountability initiatives from seven Sub-Saharan countries.

Book Explaining Child Malnutrition in Developing Countries

Download or read book Explaining Child Malnutrition in Developing Countries written by Lisa C. Smith and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2000 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in three preschool children in developing countries is undernourished. Consequently, they are likely to have impaired immune systems, poor cognitive development, low productivity as adults, and susceptibility to diet-related chronic diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease later in life. Undernourished female preschoolers are likely to grow into undernourished young women who are more likely to give birth to babies who are undernourished even before they are born, thus perpetuating the intergenerational transmission of deprivation. This report sheds light on some of the main causes of child malnutrition, projects how many children are likely to be malnourished in the year 2020 given current trends, and identifies priority actions for reducing malnutrition most quickly in the coming decades.

Book To Be a Man Is Not a One Day Job

Download or read book To Be a Man Is Not a One Day Job written by Daniel Jordan Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Refrains about financial hardship are ubiquitous in contemporary Nigeria, frequently expressed through the idiom “to be a man is not a one-day job.” But while men talk constantly about money, underlying their economic worries are broader concerns about the shifting meanings of masculinity, amid changing expectations and practices of intimacy. Drawing on twenty-five years of experience in southeastern Nigeria, Daniel Jordan Smith takes readers through the principal phases and arenas of men’s lives: the transition to adulthood; searching for work and making a living; courtship, marriage, and fatherhood; fraternal and political relationships; and finally, the attainment of elder status and death. He relates men’s struggles both to fulfill their own aspirations and to meet society’s expectations. He also considers men who behave badly, mistreat their wives and children, or resort to crime and violence. All of these men face similar challenges as they navigate the complex geometry of money and intimacy. Unraveling these connections, Smith argues, provides us with a deeper understanding of both masculinity and society in Nigeria.

Book Analyzing the Impact of Legislation on Child Labor in Pakistan

Download or read book Analyzing the Impact of Legislation on Child Labor in Pakistan written by Tazeen Fasih and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This paper exploits a natural experiment approach to identify the impact of legislation (Employment of Children Act 1991) in Pakistan on participation of children in the labor markets. The law prohibits employment of children less than 14 years of age in sectors other than agriculture or household enterprises. With micro-data, making use of regression discontinuity data design, the study finds some evidence that the Employment of Children Act 1991 helped in reducing the employment of children immediately after its implementation.

Book Women s Human Rights

Download or read book Women s Human Rights written by Anne Hellum and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As an instrument which addresses the circumstances which affect women's lives and enjoyment of rights in a diverse world, the CEDAW is slowly but surely making its mark on the development of international and national law. Using national case studies from South Asia, Southern Africa, Australia, Canada and Northern Europe, Women's Human Rights examines the potential and actual added value of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in comparison and interaction with other equality and anti-discrimination mechanisms. The studies demonstrate how state and non-state actors have invoked, adopted or resisted the CEDAW and related instruments in different legal, political, economic and socio-cultural contexts, and how the various international, regional and national regimes have drawn inspiration and learned from each other.
