Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the North-China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society for the Year 1921, Vol. 52It is therefore likely that Liu An investigated the writings and systems of past Dr. E. H. Parker concludes that the philosopher must have been a diligent student of Kuan ti, and incorporated many of his ideas, as is evident from an examination of the 21 essays. However that may be, his mind was influenced mostly by the trite and luminous maxims of Lao Tan. In the essay before us he tests his law by historical examples, and in turn, each historical example is illumined by a saying of Lao ti.We are not told how he became so much under the influence of this great sage. Possibly it might have been through his wife. Incidentally we may have here a glimpse into the home life of Liu An. His wife was evidently a student. She was in possession of a very rare book. Shall we call it her book of devotions? The author of this work was reputed to be Lao Tan and its name was the Tao Te Ching. This evidently was the home classic. The lady and her husband had possibly committed it to memory. That was the safest thing to do in those turbulent times. And the frequent quotations in his writings lead us to think that it was so. He and she knew it by heart. Its teaching at any rate seem to have become the ideal of their life and through them to have coloured the stream of Chinese thought.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Chinese Literature

Download or read book Chinese Literature written by F. Huberty James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Literature: Read Before the China Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society, Shanghai, on December 14th, 1898 Chinese Literature is as little appreciated in the West as the Chinese people. It should be remembered, however, that our acquaintance with either is limited; we have seen most of the least interesting specimens of both the books and the men; and this partial knowledge is inadequate as a basis for a correct judgment. Whatever the smart globe-trotter and the omniscient editor may choose to say the majority of those who have given most time and attention to the subject sturdily maintain that both the Chinese and their Literature possess interest and real worth.
