Book Resources of Hope

Download or read book Resources of Hope written by Raymond Williams and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-02-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collected essays and talks from one of Britain’s great thinkers, ranging across political and cultural theory Raymond Williams possessed unique authority as Britain’s foremost cultural theorist and public intellectual. Informed by an unparalleled range of reference and the resources of deep personal experience, his life’s work represents a patient, exemplary commitment to the building of a socialist future. This book brings together important early writings including “Culture is Ordinary,” “The British Left,” “Welsh Culture” and “Why Do I Demonstrate?” with major essays and talks of the last decade. It includes work on such central themes as the nature of a democratic culture, the value of community, Green socialism, the nuclear threat, and the relation between the state and the arts. Here too, collected for the first time, are the important later political essays which undertake a thorough revaluation of the principles fundamental to the idea of socialist democracy, and confirm Williams as a shrewd and imaginative political theorist. In a sober yet constructive assessment of the possibilities for socialist advance, Williams—in the face of much recent intellectual fashion—powerfully reasserts his lifelong commitment to “making hope practical, rather than despair convincing.” This valuable collection confirms Raymond Williams as a thinker of rare versatility and one of the outstanding intellectuals of our century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day Americans hear of its equality, its fairness, its superiority. The "it", is socialism. All the while, we're told that the free market is rigged, uncaring, misogynistic, unfair, unjust, and racist. We're told that socialism can fix all of this by taking from the rich and giving to the poor, and that all we have to do to find peace, equality, to end sexism, racism, to save the planet, to find utopia, is to replace the free market with socialism. Though few can describe it, a growing number of people call themselves socialists. The media "Burn for Bernie" and lavish praise on AOC. Hate filled, divisive, virtue signaling, hypocritical rhetoric, is ignored by many in the media that agree with the spin. Proselytizing on their behalf, it's supposed to be a common-sense message of compassion spread by television, bias web results, streaming platforms, college professors, the news, politicians, as well as Hollywood. It's no surprise that the movement has spread like a cancer through a one-sided debate full of misinformation. This book offers explanations as to why many, often well-meaning people, are turning to socialism. It focuses mostly on economics, and why socialism falls short of a free market. But it also discusses the pervasive bias that surrounds nearly every aspect of our daily lives. It looks at the reality of outcomes between capitalism and socialism. It focuses on the hypocrisy of America's "new" democratic socialists. I explain why the free market is actually the proven, and more moral system. To keep it simple, I do this through the use of basic statistics, economics, history, current events, and relatable stories. As a father, veteran, MBA, classical liberal, and an all-around history and economics nerd, I felt compelled to speak up about this subject! Our future depends on others understanding basic economics and the dangers of socialism before the promotion of free thought, and the free exchange of goods and ideas, is a relic of the past?

Book The Socialist Manifesto

Download or read book The Socialist Manifesto written by Bhaskar Sunkara and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Jeremy Corbyn's left-led Labour Party and Bernie Sanders's 2016 presidential campaign revived a political idea many had thought dead. But what, exactly, is socialism? And what would a socialist system look like today? In The Socialist Manifesto, Bhaskar Sunkara, editor of Jacobin magazine, argues that socialism offers the means to achieve economic equality, and also to fight other forms of oppression, including racism and sexism. The ultimate goal is not Soviet-style planning, but to win rights to healthcare, education, and housing and to create new democratic institutions in workplaces and communities. The book both explores socialism's history and presents a realistic vision for its future. A primer on socialism for the 21st century, this is a book for anyone seeking an end to the vast inequities of our age.

Book How the Poor Can Save Capitalism

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has a simple message for business leaders: you help yourselves by helping the poor. Instead of feeling as if the economy is working against them, the poor need to feel they have a stake in it so they will buy your products and put money in the bank. Supporting poor people's efforts to move into the middle class is the only way to enrich everyone, rich and poor alike.

Book A Future for Socialism

Download or read book A Future for Socialism written by John E. Roemer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this text, Roemer proposes a new future of socialism based on a redefinition of market socialism. The Achille's heel of socialism has always been maintaining innovation and efficiency in an economy in which income is equally distributed. Roemer points out that large capitalist firms have already solved a similar problem: in those firms, profits are distributed to numerous shareholders, yet they continue to innovate and compete. The author argues for a modified version of socialism, not necessarily based on public ownership, but founded on equality of opportunity and political influence.

Book excerpt: “Mr. Harrington is a sensitive, compassionate advocate of a just, humane, and civilized future. . . . [Socialism] has a lively air of optimism and boldly challenges traditional ideas.”—New York Times A Thoughtful, Compassionate Treatise on the Role of Democratic Socialism in Modern Society On learning his cancer was inoperable, renowned intellectual Michael Harrington simply asked the doctors to keep him alive long enough “to complete a summary statement of the themes I had thought of throughout an activist life.” And they did. Socialism: Past and Future is prominent thinker and democratic socialist Michael Harrington’s final contribution: a thoughtful, intelligent, and compassionate treatise on the role of socialism both past and present in modern society. He is convincing in his application of classic socialist theory to current economic situations and modern political systems, and he examines the validity of the idea of “visionary gradualism” in bringing about a socialist agenda. He believes that if freedom and justice are to survive into the next century, the socialist movement will be a critical factor. This is the definitive text on the role of socialism throughout history which Publishers Weekly calls “succinct, readable” and the Los Angeles Times Book Review says is “magnificent . . . more than anything, this is a book about hope.” In this passionate book, the late Michael Harrington draws on a lifetime of thinking and politicking to reject much that has passed for socialism and to define the new forms that will make it the only “hope for human freedom and justice” (Foreign Affairs) in the twenty-first century.

Book Why You Should Be a Socialist

Download or read book Why You Should Be a Socialist written by Nathan J. Robinson and published by All Points Books. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A primer on Democratic Socialism for those who are extremely skeptical of it. America is witnessing the rise of a new generation of socialist activists. More young people support socialism now than at any time since the labor movement of the 1920s. The Democratic Socialists of America, a big-tent leftist organization, has just surpassed 50,000 members nationwide. In the fall of 2018, one of the most influential congressmen in the Democratic Party lost a primary to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old socialist who had never held office before. But what does all this mean? Should we be worried about our country, or should we join the march toward our bright socialist future? In Why You Should Be a Socialist, Nathan J. Robinson will give readers a primer on twenty-first-century socialism: what it is, what it isn’t, and why everyone should want to be a part of this exciting new chapter of American politics. From the heyday of Occupy Wall Street through Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign and beyond, young progressives have been increasingly drawn to socialist ideas. However, the movement’s goals need to be defined more sharply before it can effect real change on a national scale. Likewise, liberals and conservatives will benefit from a deeper understanding of the true nature of this ideology, whether they agree with it or not. Robinson’s charming, accessible, and well-argued book will convince even the most skeptical readers of the merits of socialist thought.
