Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism After the War You have come through a time of great stress because you kept to your international and democratic faith. Every bound of malignity has been released to bite at you. But you have not run away, and have sought shelter neither in silence nor in what is miscalled patriotism. The result is that to-day your party is stronger than ever it has been, both in membership and moral authority. You have stood the supreme test, which is to point out the right way when others are going wrong, and to stand keeping open the gates through which people must ultimately pass to peace and satisfaction. The war people are now beginning to speak in your language and to adopt your policy. That is the beginning of your triumph, and you have now to think of the future. This at least we know That the Dawn and the Day are coming, and forth the banners go. These chapters are offered to you not as a complete set of details but as a general and a guiding survey, not as a dogmatic pronouncement but for your con sideration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Socialism and the War I have confined myself to the pronounce ments of organisations and official organs in the press, and to those of people known to represent a body of opinion. Views which, so far as can be ascertained, are merely the expression of individual opinion have been omitted. This has been done for the sake of clearness and because any thing but the general outlook belongs to a more detailed survey, which cannot be made while the war is in progress. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Red War on the Family It hardly is necessary to state to observant readers that in those countries where socialism dominated the state it has not made an impressive showing, even to those of the socialist faith, as is evidenced by the many apologies offered by the latter for the lack of success met with by socialist visionaries in such countries. But their experience has not been Without value, and enables us more correctly to appraise socialism than ever before. Book The War and Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War and Socialism Classic Reprint written by Herbert George Wells and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Socialism And the real task before mankind is quite beyond the business of the fighting line, the simple awful. Business of discrediting and discouraging these stupidities by battleship, artillery, rifle and the blood and courage of seven million men. The real task of mankind is to get better sense into the heads of these Germans, and therewith and thereby into the heads of humanity generally, and to end not simply a war, but the idea of war. What printing and writing and talking have done, printing and writing and talking can undo. Let no man be fooled by bulk and matter. Rifles do but kill men, and fresh men are born to follow them; Our business is to kill ideas. The ultimate purpose of this war is propaganda, the destruction of certain beliefs, and the creation of others. It is to this propaganda that reasonable men must address themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Socialists and the War: A Documentary History of the Attitude of the Socialist Party Toward War and Militarism Since the Outbreak of the Great War Modern penology has long discarded the crude notion that crime is caused by wilful individual perversity and that punish ment is either a corrective for the criminal or a deterrent for the would-be criminal. Enlightened penologists are unanimous in the conviction that crime is mostly the product of unjust and unhealthy social conditions and environment, and that a radical and permanent cure of crime can only be achieved in the im provement and correction of those conditions. It is necessary, moreover, to pronounce this judgment at once, for we shall have to decide shortly, before the terms of peace are discussed, under what conditions it will be possible to revive the Socialist International Union. Book War of the Classes Classic Reprint

Download or read book War of the Classes Classic Reprint written by Jack London and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War of the Classes When I was a youngster I was looked upon as a weird sort of creature, because, forsooth, I was a socialist. Reporters from local papers interviewed me, and the interviews, when published, were pathological studies of a strange and abnormal specimen of man. At that time (nine or ten years ago), because I made a stand in my native town for municipal ownership of public utilities, I was branded a red-shirt, a dynamiter, and an anarchist; and really decent fellows, who liked me very well, drew the line at my appearing in public with their sisters. Book Socialism in Thought and Action Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialism in Thought and Action Classic Reprint written by Harry Wellington Laidler and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism in Thought and Action In the year 1900, a student would have searched American literature in vain for any adequate expression of socialism written by a sympathetic student of the subject in this country, and published by a non-socialist publishing house. From that year until the outbreak of the European war, however, volume after volume issued from the press and, by the summer of 1914, practically every phase of socialist theory and tactics had been carefully treated. Since the first of August, 1914, revolutionary changes have taken place in the socialist movement and philosophy. In many countries socialist theory, for the first time, under the most difficult circumstances, has been brought face to face with reality, and the socialist movement has evolved from a small, minority group to a powerful factor in the life of the people. The war has given a great impetus to the guild socialist idea, with its emphasis on producers' control of industry and its insistence on the development of personality as the ultimate goal of society. It has afforded world-wide publicity to the soviet form of the state, with its demand for occupational representation and its temporary "dictatorship of the proletariat." Book A History of British Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of British Socialism Classic Reprint written by Max Beer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British Socialism The book which is now published under the title A History of British Socialism, Volume was intended by the author to be the first of two volumes, the second of which would carry the story of British Socialism into the opening decade of the present century. The War intervened before the second volume was ready for the Press, and Mr. Beer, like most other students, was compelled for the time being to lay his literary work on one side. The first volume, therefore, is now published separately; the next, it is hoped, will appear on the return of peace. Together they will form the most complete account of the development of Socialist thought in Great Britain which has yet appeared. The subject of the present volume is the growth of Socialism down to the rise of Chartism, and its readers must remember that there is a sequel in which the story is completed. But the period with which it deals is sufficiently distinct to be studied separately, and the book is a unity, not a mutilated fragment. Book The Socialists and the War

Download or read book The Socialists and the War written by William English Walling and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Socialists and the War: A Documentary Statement of the Position of the Socialists of All Countries, With Special Reference to Their Peace Policy This book was prepared at the suggestion of the Intercollegiate Socialist Society - of whose Executive Committee I am a member. I have to thank Miss Jessie Wallace Hughan, author of "American Socialism of the Present Day," and Mr. Leroy Scott, members of this Committee, who read over the documents. In the selection of documents the editor has aimed to choose as far as possible those of the greatest political and economic importance. No material has been omitted or included merely because it seemed creditable or discreditable to Socialists in general or to the Socialists of any particular country. I have not tried to explain away any of their acts or failures to act, nor on the other hand have I endeavored to pass any final judgment. I have merely undertaken to offer in a condensed and connected form all the materials necessary to reach an opinion on any of the leading phases of this great question: the attitude of the Socialists of all countries towards war and peace, and especially towards the present war and the peace that is to follow. I have carefully restrained all editorial comment because the leading purpose has been strict accuracy and non-partisanship. Even in cases in which the quotations are not as clear as might be desired, I have not felt justified in unduly lengthening my editorial notes, since it is difficult to make lengthy editorial statements without leaning to one side or the other. Book Socialism for Pacifists Classic Reprint

Download or read book Socialism for Pacifists Classic Reprint written by A. Fenner Brockway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism for Pacifists During last summer so many Pacifists, attracted to the i.l.p. Movement by its opposition to the war, wrote to me asking for a simple statement of the case for Socialism as Opposed to the case for Militarism that I decided to attempt to write a small book to meet the demand. I had written the first three chapters when I was removed to Pentonville Prison to serve a sentence imposed under the Defence of the Realm Act for attach ing my signature to a leaflet denouncing Conscription. The last five chapters have been written during a week's holiday at Letchworth, previous to my arrest under the Military Service Act. I regret that I have no oppor tunity to revise the ms.; there are many blemishes I would like to remove. Under the circumstances I must ask the indulgence of my readers, and trust that where there is repetition it will only serve to emphasise points which have seemed to me important. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nations at War Men thought there would be no war because International Socialism would reduce the belligerent governments to impotence. For years the world had been told that the cause of labor was international, that the workingman's struggle against capitalism was the same in France as in Germany, in Italy as in Austria. With this greater warfare in progress, involving the well-being of the workingmen of all the world, no working man would be deluded into taking up arms against his fellows who happened to speak a different tongue or render fealty to a foreign state.
