Book Humanism and Terror

Download or read book Humanism and Terror written by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 1990-06-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in France In 1947, Merleau-Ponty's essay was in part a response to Arthur Koestler's novel, Darkness at Noon, and in a larger sense a contribution to the political and moral debates of a postwar world suddenly divided into two armed camps. For Merleau-Ponty, the basic question was: given the violence in Communism, is Communism still equal to its humanist intentions? Starting with the assumption that a society is not a "temple of value-idols that figure on the front of its monuments or in its constitutional scrolls; the value of a society is the value It places upon man's relation to man," Merleau-ponty examines not only the Moscow trials of the late thirties but also Koestler's re-creation of them. And Merleau-Ponty makes it clear that the Moscow trials—and violence in general in the Communist world—can be understood only In the context of revolutionary violence. He demonstrates that it is pointless to begin an examination of Communist violence by asking whether Communism respects the rules of liberal thought; it is evident that Communism does not. The question that should be asked is whether the violence Communism exercises is revolutionary violence, capable of building humane relations among men. At a time when many are addressing similar questions to societies both in the East and in the West, Merleau-Ponty's investigations and speculations are of prime importance; they stand as a major and provocative contribution to the argument surrounding the use of violence.

Book Humanism and Terror

Download or read book Humanism and Terror written by Maurice Merleau-Ponty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raymond Aron called Merleau-Ponty "the most influential French philosopher of his generation." First published in France in 1947, Humanism and Terror was in part a response to Arthur Koestler's Darkness at Noon, and in a larger sense a contribution to the political and moral debates of a postwar world suddenly divided into two ideological armed camps. For Merleau-Ponty, the central question was: could Communism transcend its violence and intentions? The value of a society is the value it places upon man's relation to man, Merleau-Ponty examines not only the Moscow trials of the late thirties but also Koestler's re-creation of them. He argues that violence in general in the Communist world can be understood only in the context of revolutionary activism. He demonstrates that it is pointless to ask whether Communism respects the rules of liberal society; it is evident that Communism does not.In post-Communist Europe, when many are addressing similar questions throughout the world, Merleau-Ponty's discourse is of prime importance; it stands as a major and provocative contribution to limits on the use of violence. The argument is placed in its current context in a brilliant new introduction by John O'Neill. His remarks extend the line of argument originally developed by the great French political philosopher. This is a major contribution to political theory and philosophy.

Book Notes of an Underground Humanist

Download or read book Notes of an Underground Humanist written by Chris Wright and published by Booklocker. This book was released on 2009-03-02 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book touches on most of the important questions that arise in life. Somewhat in the manner of Nietzsche, it presents provocative perspectives on topics ranging from morality to politics, from art to religion, from capitalism to socialism. What is the "meaning of life"? What does it mean to act morally? What are the sources of modern unhappiness and social ills? How has Western society evolved to its present state, and what is its future? What is the future of capitalism itself? Such questions, and many others, are addressed. The book is also intended as literature, though, and as such contains poetry, fiction, and even satire. Ultimately its purpose is simply stated: it is meant to contribute to the collective project of dragging "humanism" out from the underground.

Download or read book Marx s Humanism and Its Limits written by Julián Torres López and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-05-24 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this long-form essay, Julián Esteban Torres López dissects Karl Marx's writings to make explicit a Marxian Humanitarian Theory. Torres López surveys and analyzes Marx's work on violence, revolution, and the treatment of human life, and concludes that not only did Marx see the possibility that socialism and communism could be achieved by peaceful means, but that it should be done so. Torres López challenges the mainstream notion that Marxism has always been a war-machine that leads to tyrannical, authoritarian, and anti-democratic regimes. Instead, Torres López argues that actualizing human potential, while still treating the individual as an end, was the goal Marx endorsed. As Marx got older, he became more moderate in his justifications of violence, and he more intensely adopted the view that humans deserve to be afforded dignity and treated as ends. However, though Marx hoped the road to socialism and communism would not be stained with blood, in most places in the world, he believed, violence used as self-defense would be the lever of revolutions. Nevertheless, though the end may justify force under specific circumstances, much hinges on the uncertainty of the realization of those very ends.

Book The Cuban Revolution as Socialist Human Development

Download or read book The Cuban Revolution as Socialist Human Development written by Henry Veltmeyer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-11 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book argues that the Cuban Revolution warrants a closer look as a model of socialist human development. A re-reading of the Cuban Revolution from this angle engages unresolved issues in the theory of socialist humanism and the notion of human development popularized by the United Nations Development Programme (i.e., predicated on capitalism). UNDP economists and other agencies of international cooperation for development give a human face to a capitalist development process that is anything but humane. Socialism in Cuba has taken a very different form (socialist human development) than it did elsewhere in the twentieth century. The Cuban Revolution's unique characteristics enabled it to survive adverse conditions - a 'near-perfect storm' - that still threaten its evolution.

Book excerpt: In HUMANISM, Rao Chalasani examines the inescapable link between holistic thought and macroeconomics, politics, cumulative knowledge, inclusion, and the individual pursuit of happiness. He contends that in the new century, neither capitalism nor socialism can adjust to fast-changing economic and political conditions or deliver growth to developed or developing countries. Difficult cultural adjustments areheightened by terrorism, nonlinear technological advances, and the unnerving fight between losers and winners in a globalized economy.Without feeding on doomsday scenarios, his model of humanism is a natural unifier of the most positive attributes of capitalism and socialism'a culturally compatible economic and political system built on nine variables and three catalysts that deliver measurable outputs: a sustainable GDP, a balanced environment, and a high wellness index.
