Book Introduction to European Social Security Law

Download or read book Introduction to European Social Security Law written by Frans Pennings and published by Intersentia nv. This book was released on 2003 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social security of the European Union (EU) has become of vital significance for persons living or working in a EU Member State. The creation of the European Economic Area and near accession of the candidate Members (East European countries) has further increased the relevance of this law. This book describes EU social security law, beginning with the rules relevant to migrant workers. Coverage includes Regulations 1408/71 and 574/72 and the case law of the Court of Justice of the EC. The book analyses the contributions of these judgments to the developments of coordination law and to the realisation of the objective of free movement of workers. In this respect the relation of the Regulation and the EC Treaty, which is shown in for instance the Kohll and Decker judgments, is analysed. Special attention is paid to the Proposal for Simplification and Modernisation of Regulation 1408/71. A second main part of EU social security law is the law on equal treatment of men and women. The Court of Justice issued several main decisions, of which the Barber judgment is a wellknown example. Since then, the case law has been further developed and this book helps the reader to understand the present state of affairs. A separate chapter analyses the combat against social exclusion of the EU and the instruments developed for this purpose. This is the completely revised and updated fourth edition of an authoritative book.

Book Privatizing Social Security

Download or read book Privatizing Social Security written by Martin Feldstein and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents the most important work to date on one of the pressing policy issues of the moment: the privatization of social security. Although social security is facing enormous fiscal pressure in the face of an aging population, there has been relatively little published on the fundamentals of essential reform through privatization. Privatizing Social Security fills this void by studying the methods and problems involved in shifting from the current system to one based on mandatory saving in individual accounts. "Timely and important. . . . [Privatizing Social Security] presents a forceful case for a radical shift from the existing unfunded, pay-as-you-go single national program to a mandatory funded program with individual savings accounts. . . . An extensive analysis of how a privatized plan would work in the United States is supplemented with the experiences of five other countries that have privatized plans." —Library Journal "[A] high-powered collection of essays by top experts in the field."—Timothy Taylor, Public Interest

Book Global Capital Political Institutions and Policy Change in Developed Welfare States

Download or read book Global Capital Political Institutions and Policy Change in Developed Welfare States written by Duane Swank and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-02-11 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the dramatic post-1970 rise in international capital mobility has not systematically contributed to the retrenchment of developed welfare states as many claim. Nor has globalization directly reduced the revenue-raising capacities of governments and undercut the political institutions that support the welfare state. Rather, institutional features of the polity and the welfare state determine the extent to which the economic and political pressures associated with globalization produce Welfare state retrenchment.

Book Nordic Welfare States in the European Context

Download or read book Nordic Welfare States in the European Context written by Johan Fritzell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important sequel to Nordic Social Policy (Routledge 1999) compares welfare state development over the last twenty years in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden with that of Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and other Western European countries. Topics covered include: * income distribution, health inequalities and gender equality * gender policies, health and social care services and policy reaction to family changes * social security and employment policies * financing of welfare states. In the context of globalisation, ageing populations, changing employment patterns and rising inequalities, Nordic Welfare States in the European Context offers an empirical analysis of welfare adaptations and a lively discussion of the historical development of European social policy. It finds a greater ambiguity regarding variation and trends than is commonly suggested. Contrary to expectation, there is little evidence of the Europeanisation of Nordic welfare states, rather the reverse. The comparable and empirical data used in this study make it a unique contribution to understanding current trends in European social policy.

Book Transformation of the Welfare State

Download or read book Transformation of the Welfare State written by Neil Gilbert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much has really changed in the world of welfare? A great deal, according to Neil Gilbert, one of our most deeply engaged and thoughtful analysts of social welfare policy. In this panoramic inquiry, Gilbert spans the globe to assess, in provocative yet dispassionate fashion, what welfare looks like in a free market world. From Sweden to the U.S., Gilbert finds a fundamental transformation in the welfare state--a turn away from broad-based entitlements and automatic benefits to a new, "enabling" approach defined by policies designed to promote privatization and labor force participation. He provides tangible evidence of how these new systems promote work and responsibility over protection and how they thicken the glue of civil society by diluting the pervasive role of government.
