Download or read book Social Sciences The Indian Scene written by Yogesh Atal and published by Abhinav Publications. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Sciences in India have acquired the status of a profession. Although they are relatively recent, their achievements have been remarkable. The papers collected in this volume relate to some aspects of the growth of the profession of social sciences in India. Written by one of the distinguished and leading sociologists of the country Professor Yogesh Atal — these essays convey an insider-view of the profession. The growth of the profession and the general problems related to teaching and research are discussed in the first two chapters. The reader is then introduced more intimately to the twin disciplines of sociology and social anthropology as they have developed in India. A full chapter is devoted to the studies of the village. The book also contains two articles on research methodology. One is a detailed account of the research carried out by the author on which is based his well-known book, Local Communities and National Politics (1971). The other essay is on the evolution of content analysis as a research technique. The essays do not merely narrate the history of the growth of social science enterprise in India. The author has frankly discussed the problems facing the profession, and has critically evaluated its past performance.

This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an interdisciplinary framework to map out contemporary educational studies in India. Based on conceptual tools, quantitative methods and ethnographic accounts drawn from extensive fieldwork, it addresses emerging discourses on educational policies, their operation in the everyday functioning of institutions and actual practices in teaching and learning. Individual chapters discuss the intersectionality in the current educational system of region, gender, class, caste and minorities. With comparative perspectives and case studies from across states, including under-studied rural and urban regions of India, the book explores a wide range of issues affecting the educational system, including socioeconomic and gender inequalities; the educational status of tribal settlements in the hinterlands and their respective urban areas; the marginalisation of minorities; challenges in accessing educational avenues and choices; and the model for imparting vocational education and training. It navigates complex sites of discrimination and exclusion in the institutional spaces of the educational system and assesses the consequences of market dynamics and ideological undercurrents. Presenting first-hand information from the field, it evaluates educational policies, practices and research; investigates challenges and failures; provides suggestions and fosters critical thinking for a knowledge society. The findings in this book will be of interest to researchers, scholars and teachers of education, economics, sociology, urban education and the politics of education, as well as of public policy, governance and development studies. It will also be useful to research institutions, policymakers, educationists, social scientists, education professionals, and governmental and non-governmental bodies working on education.

Book The Social Sciences in a Global Age

Download or read book The Social Sciences in a Global Age written by Dipankar Sinha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on the status and role of the social sciences in the current millennium. Drawing inspiration from a range of theorists, it critically examines the key debates on the social science stream and focuses on its ir/relevance in our times in the background of changing state-market dialectics. It specifically scrutinises knowledge politics of the global times to reveal how the neoliberal project aligns and fuses steep economic ‘conditionalities’ with professional cultural parameters of higher academia to constrain autonomy and weaken radical expressions in social science pedagogy and research. Asserting that the humanistic core of social sciences has the potential to resist acts of reducing knowledge to a monochromatic form, the book argues that the social science stream can challenge and resist such hegemonic ambitions. It also identifies and analyses the contradictions, dilemmas, predicaments and false steps of social scientists, and avoids a reductive approach based on the ‘west versus non-west’ binary. The volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers of the social sciences in general, and of sociology/politics of knowledge, political theory, political sociology and education in particular.

The people of these castes are considered outcastes and categorized as untouchables. They remain at the bottom of social hierarchy and have been socially deprived, discriminated and exploited by the upper castes since time immemorial. This is the result of our rigid caste system which divides the Indian society into upper castes and lower castes on the basis of birth. Mythologically, the people of these castes are born impure, culturally they suffer from social disabilities and occupationally they are linked with impure occupation and above all they are exclusively dependent for their survival on the higher castes of the respective villages who have tradition bound attitudes, reflected in the nomenclature, castes etc.
