Book Social Purpose for Canada

Download or read book Social Purpose for Canada written by Michael K. Oliver and published by Peterborough : Ontario Audio Library Service. This book was released on 1961-12-15 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where is Canada going in the next half-century? Have her people a sense of purpose for themselves or their country in the dangerous excitements of the affluent society and the nuclear age? A number of writers well known for their articles and books on the Canadian cultural, social, and political sense come together here to take up these vital questions. Their concern has been to reveal the purposeless, the mediocre, the inequitable beneath the glitter of our prosperity and to issue a challenge to all Canadians to become fully alive as individuals and as citizens to both the dangers and the potentialities of the post-Hiroshima world. This book is social criticism at its best—alert, authoritative, urgent. This common concern brought the authors together in the planning of an unusual book. The finished work shows that they share a left-of-centre viewpoint; it also shows that they write as individuals. The essays, it is confidently predicted, will be found greatly stimulating for the high quality of their analysis by serious readers of all persuasions who are concerned about the Canadian society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Purpose Enterprises: Case Studies for Social Change presents case studies of twelve organizations that operate in a growing niche within the Canadian social economy: market-based entities supported by a nonprofit organization and operated for the benefit of a workforce who lives on the margins of society. Using a variety of research methods, the contributors examine the work of social purpose enterprises in a range of businesses including food services, child care, furniture, courier services, and microfinance. Combining the experience of academics and practitioners, each chapter analyses the economic, social, and policy implications of the case. Building on research published in Researching the Social Economy (2010) and Businesses with a Difference (2013), Social Purpose Enterprises provides a valuable resource for those involved in the growing push to encourage market-based solutions for those on the social margins.

Book Understanding Supportive Employment and Job Training in Canadian Social Purpose Enterprises

Download or read book Understanding Supportive Employment and Job Training in Canadian Social Purpose Enterprises written by Andrea Chan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis contains three papers that examine the socially supportive experiences of working at social purpose enterprises across Canada. The first paper presents a mixed-methods study exploring the range of work-centered social supports that can be part of the social purpose enterprise experience. From the perspective of managers and supervisors of these organizations, it explores the potential influence of these supports on the work outcomes and overall wellbeing of participants who often face significant and multiple barriers to employment. From the perspective of employees and job training participants, the second paper quantitatively examines the influences of practical and emotional social support on changes in participants' personal and vocational wellbeing during their time at the social purpose enterprises. Through participants' own personal accounts, the final paper explores the nature and meaning of their experiences of social support, both as provider and recipient of support. Findings from all three studies point to the importance of matching social support to the needs and goals of the employees and training participants, as well as the relevance of how people perceive their experiences of being supported in determining whether they actually benefit from the support. Presenting social purpose enterprises as vehicles for mobilizing social support through alternative work arrangements draws attention to the number of vulnerabilities faced by people most socially and economically excluded, of which employment is but one area requiring attention. This research contributes to a growing body of literature that demonstrates the holistic way these organizations can address issues of long-term employment exclusion as well as individual and community wellbeing more broadly.

There is much debate as to how Canadians differ from or resemble citizens of other countries, particularly the United States.

Book The Social Purpose of Business

Download or read book The Social Purpose of Business written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After investing in and measuring CSR strategies for a decade or more, many leading companies find that their impacts are only modest and they need an accelerated model to achieve social impact at a greater scale. They rewire their business so that their growth is a positive force in society and realize a competitive advantage in doing so. Further, they adopt a compelling and aspirational core purpose or mission that goes beyond making money to create value for both business and society. This core purpose ? their contribution to society and the greater good ? shapes and informs the company's essential reason for being. For some it transcends maximizing profits and shareholder value, and for others it is the means by which they create value and grow. Either way, it becomes a shared intent by everyone in the business, guiding the decisions of leaders and employees across the company.

He uses the typology to compare development of assistance provisions in the provinces, provincial responses to federal initiatives, and unique trajectories of assistance regimes. He concludes by surveying some of the broader implications of his findings for issues such as the development of national standards and the impact of globalization on social assistance provision. Book Social Welfare in Canada 4th Edition

Download or read book Social Welfare in Canada 4th Edition written by Steven Hick and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ?social safety net? created in Canada after World War II faced serious challenges from the early 1980s onwards. Neoliberal economic policies pursued by successive federal and provincial governments left many groups of people ? especially those in precarious work, women, racialized minorities, older individuals and Indigenous communities ? highly vulnerable and seriously under-protected. Social justice and full equality can come about only if systemic barriers such as these are acknowledged and completely eliminated. About This Edition This edition focuses on the transformative social policies and universal programs that are needed to promote personal and social well-being and ensure full equality of opportunity for all. Social workers at home and abroad are committed to building inclusive communities, promoting participatory democracy, fighting racism, and actively addressing the problems of economic sustainability, and climate change. The social work profession provides an excellent opportunity to join with health care professionals and others to bring about the fundamental changes necessary to ensure full inclusion, equity and social justice, and a safer and prosperous future.

Book Canadian Social Policy Fifth Edition

Download or read book Canadian Social Policy Fifth Edition written by Anne Westhues and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social policy shapes the daily lives of every Canadian citizen and should reflect the beliefs of a majority of Canadians on just approaches to the promotion of health, safety, and well-being. Too often, those on the front lines—social workers, nurses, and teachers—observe that policies do not work well for the most vulnerable groups in society. In the first part of this new edition of Canadian Social Policy, Westhues and Wharf argue that service deliverers have discretion in how policies are implemented, and the exercise of this discretion is how citizens experience policy—whether or not it is fair and reasonable. They show the reader how social policy is made and they encourage active citizenship to produce policies that are more socially just. New material includes an examination of the reproduction of systemic racism through the implementation of human rights policy and a comparative analysis of the policy-making process in Quebec and English Canada. The second part of the book discusses policy issues currently under debate in Canada. Included are new chapters that explore parental leave policies and housing as a determinant of health. All chapters contain newly updated statistical data and research and policy analysis. A reworked section on the process of policy-making and the addition of questions for critical reflection enhance the suitability of the book as a core resource in social policy courses. The final chapter explores how front-line workers in the human services can advocate for change in organizational policies that will benefit the people supported.

Book Social Purpose and Schooling

Download or read book Social Purpose and Schooling written by Jerry Paquette and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this work critically analyses the competing claims about alternative arrangements for schooling. It does so in light of major popularly understood agendas for social and political purpose, and of the troubled and much less clearly understood assumptions and issues behind them. The book examines closely four generic types of arrangements for schooling in light of a comprehensive framework for understanding the publicness or privateness of schools, and the relationships between social and educational purpose. The book poses key questions about the meaning and purpose of schooling in the rapidly evolving social, demographic and technological realities of the time. It also probes fundamental assumptions, values and beliefs behind educational and public policy-making. In doing so, it offers a way to make sense of unorthodox arrangements for the provision and funding of schools.
