Book The Europeanisation of social protection

Download or read book The Europeanisation of social protection written by Kvist, Jon and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2007-09-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book challenges the common view that social protection is exclusively a national concern with EU social policy fragmented and merely symbolic. Through eleven country studies, the book reveals that EU-level developments increasingly interact with social protection in all countries - a remarkable transformation from ten years ago. Using the same thematic framework, the book systematically compares how Europeanisation of social protection differs across countries chosen to reflect increasing EU diversity. For each country, specialists in social protection evaluate the form and extent of Europeanisation, comparing national strategies with the European social model. They examine recent reforms and responses to EU initiatives, including the Lisbon strategy and the open method of coordination, the extension of the internal market to services, the Economic and Monetary Union and EU enlargement. Differences in Europeanisation reflect not only different political legacies but also different adjustment pressures in terms of national welfare regime and degree of competitiveness. Europeanisation of social protection brings together both new evidence and new perspectives, making it essential reading for everyone interested in the changing patterns of social policy in Europe.

Book EMU Social Protection Social Charter and Regional Social Cohesion

Download or read book EMU Social Protection Social Charter and Regional Social Cohesion written by Jozef Pacolet and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social aspects of the Economics and Monetary Union (EMU) have been receiving increasing prominence in the debate concerning the future direction of European integration. This report links macro-economic, social and regional policy strands. It recapitulates the arguments of recent studies on fiscal federalism and European integration. Aspects of subsidiarity, convergence, cohesion, social protection and interregional and interpersonal distribution are developed. The relation between social and regional policy and macro-economic performance is studied. Based on empirical evidence, simulations have been made of the relation between regional cohesion and social protection at European and national level. Important observations are that the EMU can be combined with differences in the level of social protection, and that European regional cohesion is improved by national systems of social protection and redistributions. The EMU should endeavour to leave national systems of redistribution intact. [4e de couv.].

Book Social Policy Developments in Greece

Download or read book Social Policy Developments in Greece written by Elias Mossialos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been much debate surrounding the future of the welfare state in Europe, the complex factors influencing reform, and the extent to which responses to pressures on welfare could lead to irreversible systemic changes in social policy. By providing an in-depth analysis of social policy developments in Greece, this work furthers understanding of welfare reform trajectories in Europe. The authors thoroughly examine aspects of structural change, challenges and responses in major policy areas of employment, social security, family and gender, health and social care, and migration. Research issues central to the debate on 'recasting European welfare states', such as structural adjustments with regard to the production, organization and delivery of welfare, significant changes in the financial side of social protection, the role of political parties, the social partners and other major social actors in influencing (or resisting) policy reform, are at the forefront of the contributions to this volume. The scope and intensity of pressures on the Greek welfare state emanating from the supranational level and the challenges linked to European integration and economic and monetary union are also of crucial importance in the analyses undertaken.

Book Social developments in the European Union 2013

Download or read book Social developments in the European Union 2013 written by David Natali (OSE) and published by ETUI. This book was released on 2014-06-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union has gone through a crucial period marked by growing anti-EU sentiments and the difficult implementation of its largely renewed socio-economic governance. After years of in-depth innovations and the hope of reinvigorating the E(M)U social dimension, European institutions have engaged in a lively debate on how to exit the recession and relaunch the integration project. While most Member States have continued to pursue punitive austerity programmes – at a time when 27 million Europeans are unemployed and a quarter of the EU population is at risk of poverty – most stakeholders (namely the trade union movement) and policymakers agree on the need for an EU-driven growth strategy. This 2013 edition of Social developments in the European Union provides key insights from analysts and scholars. Through the critical assessment of the EU economic governance of the last few years, contributors have set guidelines for a reinforced EU social protection and investment plan. The proposals for a pan-European unemployment insurance scheme and an EU minimum income scheme are analysed together with a renewed focus on the gender dimension of European social policies. Beyond economic and social governance, this volume critically reviews national reforms of labour market policies. While the state of the European economy is still gloomy, the institutional and policy reforms proposed here represent an opportunity to unveil a new path for Europe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When political observers talk European security, they invariably refer to the challenges Western Europe faces on its peripheries, rarely imagining that the greatest dangers to the new Europe may come from within. Without necessarily suggesting a worst case ending, this study argues that there is indeed a series of crises converging on post Cold War Europe that threaten its stability and need to be addressed by European policy makers and taken into account by Americans. Areas of discussion include the welfare state in transition, crisis of the political system, the decline of the nation-state, and prospects for the future.
