Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Problems: An Inquiry Into the Law of Influences IN the duty we have imposed on ourselves we are confined to the relative. Hence, while we have quoted the sentiments and dogmas Of secular and religious systems, it is not to be under stood that we support and concur in them wholly, or even partially. Our Object in quoting the principles of systems has been to Show where they agree and where they differ. It has been difficult to do this fairly in all cases, but it has been our endeavour to succeed in it. Our study has thus been to follow out the laws which govern the movements Of society in its social interests in as far as they are affected by these agreements and differences. The theme is vast, and the work Of one person on such a theme necessarily can only be very limited and imperfect. The theme is vast, and the work of one person on such a theme necessarily can only be very limited and imperfect. We observe that a scientific man of high eminence has enunciated that he has not yet been able to reconcile the teachings of science with one of the radical doctrines of Christianity. This implies that it has been his wish to do so; but this momentous labour is not ours. Yet with all humility we submit that our effort is useful. While we do not essay in secular or religions matters to make the diameters and asymptotes of the living hyperbola conform, we weigh their differences, and by this means found our arguments and solve our problems. Book The Practice of Social influence in Multiple Cultures

Download or read book The Practice of Social influence in Multiple Cultures written by Wilhelmina Wosinska and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2000-11-01 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a diverse collection of studies reporting the effects of social influence processes in multiple cultures at both the universal and culture-specific levels. The book is characterized by three distinct features. First, the social influence process is considered as a ubiquitous and pervasive feature of human interaction. Second, the book represents a multicultural approach which includes both cross-cultural and culture-focused examinations. Third, the book emphasizes practical implications of the research presented. This volume incorporates theory and research stemming from three different approaches to social influence: social influence principles across cultures, social influence and social change across cultures, and culture and moral perspective in the social influence process. Because each of these three parts encompasses a considerable variety of research methodologies, social contexts, and cultures, each is proceeded by an integrative commentary authored by one of the book editors. These essays provide syntheses of the topics and themes within the corresponding sections and within the book as a whole. They also offer critical commentaries on both theoretical and methodological issues, raise suggestions for future research, and focus on practical applications. This book is intended for both scholars interested in cross- and multicultural research into the mechanisms of the social influence process and for the professional whose mission is to make planned changes in a society. Knowledge about the influence process, especially regarding how it works in different cultures and within several cultural groups, facilitates this goal. The practical implications ending each chapter serve as encouraging instructions for such applications.

Book Social Problems Law and Society

Download or read book Social Problems Law and Society written by Angela Kathryn Stout and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles presents a critical, issue-oriented approach to law and society, emphasizing its important relationship to contemporary social problems. By exploring the interstitial area between the sociology of law, social problems and social movements, the initial chapters trace out a theoretical trajectory which points to the need to move beyond traditional and social constructionist approaches. A variety of empirical studies together explore the contradictory dynamics of class as they relate to race and gender in both a national and global context, illustrating the dialectical interplay between the state and social movements. Employing a wide range of perspectives so as to convey the great diversity found in the contemporary sociology of law and justice studies, these authors collectively share a broad consensus concerning the need to explore how social movements and the larger political economy play a pivotal role in shaping state reactions to the challenges presented by contemporary social problems. With its integrated presentation of theoretical perspectives and empirical studies, this unique anthology will be useful in a variety of sociology, criminology, and justice studies course offerings such Law and Society, Social Problems, Crime and Social Justice, Social Movements, Law and Social Control, Social Change, Law and Public Policy, Introduction to Legal Studies, and others. Undergraduate and graduate students alike will appreciate that these articles, selected for their academic rigor, are highly readable and strongly oriented towards high profile social issues, including those of class, race, and gender inequalities as well as social movement and legal struggles in community, national and global settings.

Book Social Power and Political Influence

Download or read book Social Power and Political Influence written by and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of social power, the ability of individuals to affect the behavior and belief of others, is central to any understanding of the dynamics of change in our society. It is therefore surprising that social scientists, and especially social psychologists, have devoted relatively little attention to the subject and have accumulated relatively little knowledge about it. But this gap may be more apparent than real argues James T. Tedeschi; there has in fact been a great deal of research on many aspects of interpersonal influence. What is missing is the kind of consensus about an operational definition of the concept of power that would bring this work usefully into focus. The purpose of Social Power and Political Influence is to bring together the best work of scholars from many disciplines in order to organize, develop, evaluate, and interpret scientific theories of social, political, and economic power. The contributors are drawn from anthropology, political science, sociology, and social psychology. They illustrate a variety of approaches, ranging from ethnographic case studies to mathematically formalized models. Presenting theory and methods, these chapters treat in provocative and creative ways such important problems as the factors that affect the use of power and the nature of response to its use, the linkages that affect the flow of power between individuals and social systems, the consequences of attributions of power by actors and observers, and the implications of trust as an alternative to explicit influence. This in-depth scholarly sampling of research and theory will be of great interest to everyone concerned with the scientific study of social and political power and the influence processes. The interdisciplinary nature of the topic itself and of the work represented here make Social Power and Political Influence an important contribution for students and scholars in many fields, from social psychology, political science and sociology to communications, management science, and economics. James T. Tedeschi is professor of psychology at the State University of New York at Albany, and is the author of numerous theoretical and research papers on the topics of power and influence. Some of his books include Violence, Aggression, and Coercive Actions, Aggression and Violence: Social Interactionist Perspectives, and Introduction to Social Psychology.
