Book Social Networks and the Life Course

Download or read book Social Networks and the Life Course written by Duane F. Alwin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume engages the interface between the development of human lives and social relational networks. It focuses on the integration of two subfields of sociology/social science--the life course and social networks. Research practitioners studying social networks typically focus on social structure or social organization, ignoring the complex lives of the people in those networks. At the same time, life course researchers tend to focus on individual lives without necessarily studying the contexts of social relationships in which lives are embedded and “linked” to one another through social networks. These patterns are changing and this book creates an audience of researchers who will better integrate the two subfields. It covers the role of social networks across the life span, from childhood and adolescence, to midlife, through old age.

Book Social Networks and Health Inequalities

Download or read book Social Networks and Health Inequalities written by Andreas Klärner and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book applies insights from the network perspective in health research to explain the reproduction of health inequalities. It discusses the extant literature in this field that strongly correlates differences in social status with health behaviours and outcomes, and add to this literature by providing a coherent theoretical explanation for the causes of these health inequalities. It also shows that much research is needed on the precise factors and the social and socio-psychological mechanisms that are at play in creating and cementing social inequalities in health behaviours. While social support and social relations have received considerable attention within social and behavioural science research on health inequalities, this book considers the whole network of interpersonal relations, structures and influence mechanisms. This is the perspective of the social network analytical approach which has recently gained much attention in health research. The chapters of this book cover state-of-the-art research, open research questions, and perspectives for future research. The book provides network analyses on health inequalities from the perspective of sociology, psychology, and public health and is of interest to a wide range of scholars, students and practitioners trying to understand how health inequalities are reproduced across generations.

Book Security and Privacy in Social Networks

Download or read book Security and Privacy in Social Networks written by Yaniv Altshuler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-08-14 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security and Privacy in Social Networks brings to the forefront innovative approaches for analyzing and enhancing the security and privacy dimensions in online social networks, and is the first comprehensive attempt dedicated entirely to this field. In order to facilitate the transition of such methods from theory to mechanisms designed and deployed in existing online social networking services, the book aspires to create a common language between the researchers and practitioners of this new area- spanning from the theory of computational social sciences to conventional security and network engineering.

Book Social Networks and Social Support

Download or read book Social Networks and Social Support written by Derek Lackaff and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation contains three main sections. The first section begins with an overview of network generation research, with special attention paid to computer-assisted self-interviewing techniques. This chapter discusses the author's implementation of a social network site aware survey application called PASN. A pilot study using PASN was conducted (N = 85), and the results suggest that this method may result in less participant burden in social network data provision. The second section presents a review of theories of social belonging. The models in this study compared students (N = 179) who were local to their college to students who made a more substantial geographic move to attend college. The analysis revealed little difference in terms of average communication technology use and that nonlocal students had more face-to-face interaction than local students. Nonlocal students experienced significantly more loneliness, and both groups experienced declines in satisfaction over the semester, with the effect being exacerbated for nonlocal students. The final section utilizes a novel operationalization of social integration and divestment to explore the college transition. The findings of these analysis present tentative evidence that reliance on the pre-college social support network may be associated with less positive student outcomes.

Book The Transition from Home to School in Children s Social Networks

Download or read book The Transition from Home to School in Children s Social Networks written by Candice Feiring and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study longitudinally examined attributes of children's social networks as they changed from the preschool period to middle childhood. The social networks of 75 middle class white children at 3, 6, and 9 years of age were assessed for daily contact and number of contacts with kin, nonkin, adults, peers, and same and opposite sex friends. Data from the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Longitudinal Study were used for the assessment. The data allowed for description of quantitative and qualitative changes in the children's networks as the children, presumably, became increasingly capable of choosing their social network members within the constraints set by parents and society. Age changes in the network structure that reflected the transition from home to school were expected. Network changes were found to reflect various kinds of developmental functions. Some changes, such as the linear increase in the daily contact with peers, appeared to be gradual. Some changes, such as the shift to very little kin compared to nonkin contact, or the drop in number of opposite sex peers, appeared to occur between 3 and 6 years. Some changes, such as the increase in number of peers and in particular same-sex friends, showed the greatest shift at 9 years. The expectation that the major transition would occur when children between 3 and 6 years moved from home to school was only partially supported."--ERIC.

Book Social Networks in Transition

Book excerpt: Inter-household transfers in Russia, Ukraine, and Latvia to provide an important supplement to individual incomes. These transfers are as high as in many developing countries. Transfers are from richer to poorer, from older to younger, and to femaleheaded households. We find no evidence that Russia has lower transfers than Ukraine, which has had relatively little reform. The high level of inter-household transfers may help explain why there has been so little social protest in Russia despite the large fall in measured real wages.
