Book A Tale of Two Villages

Download or read book A Tale of Two Villages written by Alina Mungiu and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dramatic story of land and power from twentieth-century Eastern Europe is set in two extraordinary villages: a rebel village, where peasants fought the advent of Communism and became its first martyrs, and a model village turned forcibly into a town, Dictator Ceauşescu’s birthplace. The two villages capture among themselves nearly a century of dramatic transformation and social engineering, ending up with their charged heritage in the present European Union. "One of Romania’s foremost social critics, Alina Mungiu-Pippidi offers a valuable look at several decades of policy that marginalized that country’s rural population, from the 1918 land reform to the post-1989 property restitution. Illustrating her arguments with a close comparison of two contrasting villages, she describes the actions of a long series of “predatory elites,” from feudal landowners through the Communist Party through post-communist leaders, all of whom maintained the rural population’s dependency. A forceful concluding chapter shows that its prospects for improvement are scarcely better within the EU. Romania’s villagers have an eminent and spirited advocate in the author.”

Book The Roma in Romanian History

Download or read book The Roma in Romanian History written by Viorel Achim and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the greatest challenges during the enlargement process of the European Union towards the east is how the issue of the Roma or Gypsies is tackled. This ethnic minority group represents a much higher share by numbers, too, in some regions going above 20% of the population. This enormous social and political problem cannot be solved without proper historical studies like this book, the most comprehensive history of Gypsies in Romania. It is based on academic research, synthesizing the entire historical Romanian and foreign literature concerning this topic, and using lot of information from the archives. The main focus is laid on the events of the greatest consequence. Special attention is devoted to aspects linked to the long history of the Gypsies, such as slavery, the process of integration and assimilation into the majority population, as well as the marginalization of Gypsies, which has historic roots. The process of emancipation of Gypsies in the mid-19th century receives due treatment. The deportation of Gypsies to Transnistria during the Antonescu regime, between 1942-1944, is reconstructed in a special chapter. The closing chapters elaborate on the policy toward Gypsies in the decades after the Second World War that explain for the latest developments and for the situation of this population in today's Romania.

Book Sustainable Development of Agriculture

Download or read book Sustainable Development of Agriculture written by Jyoti K. Parikh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-08-23 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food problems - the efficient production or procurement of food and its appropriate distribution among members of society - are problems endemic to mankind. Yet the nature and dimensions of these problems have been changing over time. As economic systems have developed, specialization has increased; and this has led to increased interdependences of rural and urban areas, of agricultural and nonagricultural sectors, and of nations. When the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) began the Food and Agriculture Program (FAP) in 1976, we started with these objectives: (1) To evaluate the nature and dimensions of the world food situation. (2) To identify the factors that affect it. (3) To suggest policy alternatives at national, regional, and global levels: (a) To alleviate current food problems. (b) To prevent food problems in the future. To realize these objectives, FAP was organized around two major tasks. The first task was directed at national policy for food and agriculture in an international situation. Here, computable general equilibrium models were developed for nearly 20 major developed and developing countries and were linked together to examine food trade, aid, capital flows, and how they affect hunger, in addition to the effects of national government policies, which were also considered in detail. This approach, however, needed to be complemented by another approach that dealt with food production at the farm level.

Book Public Policy in Agriculture

Download or read book Public Policy in Agriculture written by Ashok K. Mishra and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, developed countries have formulated public policies in agriculture ranging from supporting rural life and farm income to promoting sustainability of food and fibre production. Public Policy in Agriculture: Impact on Labor Supply and Household Income addresses the lack of empirical research in this area. It explores the impact of differing approaches to public policy through a series of international case studies, from the USA and Canada to South Korea, Norway, Slovenia and Taiwan. At a time when much of the developed world has been experiencing budget deficits and policy-makers and the public in general have re-opened the debate on public expenditures in the agricultural sector, this is a timely volume. Mishra, Viaggi and Gomez y Paloma have written an authoritative guide to agricultural public policy that will serve as a reference for academics, researchers, students, and policy-makers.

Book Migration and Social Protection in Europe and Beyond Volume 1

Download or read book Migration and Social Protection in Europe and Beyond Volume 1 written by Jean-Michel Lafleur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first open access book in a series of three volumes provides an in-depth analysis of social protection policies that EU Member States make accessible to resident nationals, non-resident nationals and non-national residents. In doing so, it discusses different scenarios in which the interplay between nationality and residence could lead to inequalities of access to welfare. Each chapter maps the eligibility conditions for accessing social benefits, by paying particular attention to the social entitlements that migrants can claim in host countries and/or export from home countries. The book also identifies and compares recent trends of access to welfare entitlements across five policy areas: health care, unemployment, family benefits, pensions, and guaranteed minimum resources. As such this book is a valuable read to researchers, policy makers, government employees and NGO’s.

Book Activity Incomes and Social Welfare

Download or read book Activity Incomes and Social Welfare written by Manuela Sofia Stanculescu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and quantifies the major socioeconomic changes that have occurred in four new member states of the EU (Slovenia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria) since the early 1990s. The period covered was a particularly turbulent one, not only because of the transition process which was well underway but becase of the stablization packages and other economic, monetary and social policy measures, which have had a strong impact at individual and household levels. While previous comparable studies have been carried out, they cover the period only to the mid 1990s, thus this book contains unique and very valuable statistical and micro data. Within the broad framework of socioeconomic change, a number of topics are explored in greater detail. These include changes in activity, occupational status and educational attainment, household income sources and income inequality, and risk of income poverty. The analysis is based on household budget surveys and complemented with other statistical sources, enabling a coherent analysis of the impact of large changes in social policy at household level. The country chapters are all based on common methodological guidelines enabling comparisons to be drawn. This will be an invaluable book for researchers in comparative social policy, poverty and social stratification and economic sociology, and for specialists on Central and Eastern Europe.

Book Peasants Into European Farmers

Download or read book Peasants Into European Farmers written by Katy Fox and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an ethnographic analysis of how the EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was deployed by policy makers and elites in the first year after EU membership, and how it shaped peasant livelihoods. Given the polarised nature of Romania's postsocialist agrarian structure, the CAP excluded peasants from its policies, and demanded they change their subsistence farms into commercial farms. Arguing from the premise that subsistence farms are actually peasant households working on different principles from farms altogether, it was possible to inquire into the resourceful strategies people deployed in their everyday lives.

Book Priorities in negotiating Romania s accession to the European Union

Download or read book Priorities in negotiating Romania s accession to the European Union written by Perju Genoveva and published by Babelcube Inc.. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priorities in negotiating Romania's accession to the European Union by Prof. ec. Dr. Genoveva-Elena period Priorities in negotiating Romania's accession to the European Union The competitiveness of the Romanian exports has improved both as a result of the restructuring of the economy and the devaluation of the currency. The example of industrial production is illustrative. Production of the processing industry decreased by 8% in 1999 compared to 1998, its share in exports increasing from 30.7% to 35.1% and the export growth rate was 5.9%. The main effect was a reduction of the current account deficit. Overall, the current account deficit fluctuated, representing on average 5.2% of GDP. The budget deficit was difficult to control but it was achieved by applying the European Union's strictures. We can also talk about performance in terms of the level of external debt relative to the level of the external debt of the Union, which is at a higher level than other candidate countries. The labor market was affected by imbalances both in the ratio of the active and inactive population and in the employment rate. The population employed in agriculture owns about 40% of the total employed population. In addition, a large part of the population was affected by the poor (approximately 33.8%) population, especially in rural areas (40.5%). In such an internal and international framework marked by interdependencies with echoes internally from the Union or candidate countries, resolving divergent situations or removing obstacles to assuming obligations and arousing political will, the quality and experience of the negotiator can be considered decisive for further cooperation.
