Book Skill Formation of Engineers in Large Korean Firms

Download or read book Skill Formation of Engineers in Large Korean Firms written by Jooyeon Jeong and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the basis of firm-level case studies, this paper examines the actual performance of university education and in-firm training for engineers in large Korean manufacturing firms. University education fails to meet the actual demands for skills at the firm level, while in-firm training fails to devote sufficient resources to the continuous, lifetime skill formation of engineers. The poor performance of this education is explained by the rigid university administration system in Korea, and worsened by exclusive government intervention. The limitations of in-firm training are accounted for by several features of corporate management, including the prevailing production strategies and top-down governance structures inside firms as well as the distinct occupational culture popular among young engineers.

Book Human Capital and Development

Download or read book Human Capital and Development written by Ju-Ho Lee and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent decades, Korea has been one of only a handful of countries that have made the successful transformation to become a developed nation by simultaneously achieving persistent economic growth combined with a democratic political system. Experts and political leaders worldwide have attributed this achievement to investments in people or, in other words, the power of education. Whilst numerous books have highlighted the role of industrial policies, technological growth, and international trade in Korea’s development process, this is one of the first to focus on the role of human capital. It shows how the accumulation of human capital aided transformation and helps explain the policies, strategies and challenges that Korea faces now and in the future.

However this is being challenged by the rise of knowledge as a principal driver of competitiveness. This book is the result of a joint study by the OECD and the World Bank to develop a comprehensive set of national policy responses to the knowledge revolution. It concentrates on four areas: 1) an institutional and economic regime that provides incentives for the creation of new knowledge and its efficient use; 2) an educated and entrepreneurial population; 3) a dynamic information infrastructure; 4) an efficient system of innovation.

Book OECD Economic Surveys Estonia 2019

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys Estonia 2019 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estonia’s economy continues to perform well, and growing incomes support well-being. However, the expansion has peaked, and growth is set to soften due to weak international demand. Prudent fiscal policy has resulted in low debt, but spending pressures related to meeting infrastructure needs and ageing are mounting. Old age poverty is high and the proposal to allow early withdrawal of pension funds threatens macroeconomic stability and pension adequacy. The gender wage gap is among the highest in the OECD, and inequalities in income and health are considerable, reflecting gaps in the social safety net. The oil-shale sector is highly energy-intensive and is the main culprit behind Estonia’s high greenhouse gas emissions, but reducing dependence on the sector is challenging, as it is an important employer and meets 70% of Estonia’s energy needs.
