Book excerpt: Because children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have difficulty with social interactions, they may not regularly engage in play activities with their siblings. Using an alternating treatment design, this study examined the efficacy of video-modeling (VM) and video self-modeling (VSM) to improve social initiations and duration of play between three children diagnosed with ASD, ages 6-7 years old, and their siblings. Dependent variables were (a) latency to initiate interaction; and (b) duration of time engaged together in play. In-home sessions of video instruction taught children to approach their sibling and say, “Lets play.” Preference assessments identified toys used during intervention. Generalization exposed participants to novel toys without viewing a video model. Baseline results indicated two children did not initiate play at baseline nor did they engage in play with their sibling. One child initiated play in three baseline sessions but did not remain engaged throughout the entire session. After exposure to the intervention, all children more quickly initiated social play across VM, VSM, and Generalization. Upon acquiring this pivotal social skill, children diagnosed with ASD maintained social engagement with siblings across a variety of play activities. The purpose of this book is to introduce a sibling as a playmate for social interaction intervention for children with ASD. It aims to appeal to a broad audience of practitioners who provide services to children with ASD and/or families of a child with ASD with a solid research based instructional curriculum. The book is based on the previous research studies on the child-mediated social intervention for children with ASD; those results have indicated the positive impact not only on increased social initiations and responses of children with ASD, but also on the higher occurrences of interactions between children with ASD and their typically developing siblings and peers. With adequate support, siblings of children with ASD not only play and/or interact with their brothers or sisters with ASD to learn appropriate social skills, but they also gain confidence for being helpful and skillful in building a positive sibling interaction and relationship with their brothers or sisters with ASD. The central goal of this book is two-fold: (1) To address how a positive sibling relationship could be established and become a buffer factor to the stresses and impacts of autism on family ecology, and (2) to present a comprehensive intervention on siblings as the agents of social change in order to support positive sibling interactions between children with ASD and their typically developing siblings.

Book excerpt: A critical component of teaching social skills to people with autism is the generalization of behavior change across a variety of untrained situations during which social skills are appropriate. The script-fading procedure is an effective technology for teaching social skills to people with autism, but few researchers have established cues in the natural environment as the discriminative stimuli for social initiations. The purpose of this study was to use a script-fading procedure to teach young children with autism to initiate to one another across various activities in the school setting, and to program for generalization across untrained stimuli in the school setting and in the untrained home setting with a sibling. The three participants, ages 7 to 10 years, demonstrated deficits in social initiations with their peers. During the baseline condition, the participants did emit initiations to one another, although this behavior was variable and did not endure over time. With the introduction of the script-fading procedure, however, social initiations increased systematically for all participants. Moreover, the data demonstrated that the effects of the script-fading procedure generalized across untrained stimuli, responses, and to an untrained setting with an untrained conversation partner. Overall, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of the script-fading procedure in teaching children with autism to initiate to their peers. This study has expanded upon previous research by demonstrating generalization from school with peers to the home setting with siblings, and by providing social validity data obtained through outside observers that support the effectiveness of the script-fading procedure in producing an important behavior change.
