Book Guidelines for Probabilistic Performance Based Seismic Design and Assessment of Slope Engineering

Download or read book Guidelines for Probabilistic Performance Based Seismic Design and Assessment of Slope Engineering written by Yu Huang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-16 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a new design and evaluation framework based on slope Stochastic Dynamics theory to probabilistic seismic performance for slope engineering. For the seismic dynamic stability safety of slope, it shifts from deterministic seismic dynamic analysis to quantitative analysis based on nonlinear stochastic dynamics, that is, from qualitative to the description of stochasticity of earthquake excitation that meet the needs in related design specification and establish a performance standard. In the nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of slope subjected to seismic ground motion, the term “randomness” is used to express the uncertainty in the intensity and frequency of earthquake excitation for slope engineering dynamic seismic performance. It mainly includes seismic design fortification standard, corresponding ground motion excitation, performance index threshold, and slope deterministic nonlinear seismic dynamic response. Even more than that, the seismic dynamic large deformation approaches of the whole process and comprehensive analysis for flow analysis after slope instability failure. Eventually, the probabilistic seismic dynamic performance of the slope engineering will be characterized by nonlinear dynamic reliability.

Book Multinational Corporations and the Emerging Network Economy in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Multinational Corporations and the Emerging Network Economy in Asia and the Pacific written by Juan J. Palacios and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-03-25 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multinational Corporations and the Emerging Network Economy in Asia and the Pacific delves into the ongoing rise of a global economy anchored in a web of inter-firm production networks and the role played by multinational corporations in the process. It considers the strategies and business models corporations have adopted lately to face today’s highly competitive global markets, especially outsourcing and offshoring, focusing on the modalities observed in Asia Pacific and the Pacific Rim at large. Since their inception, corporations have undergone a series of fundamental changes; each has corresponded to a given era of industrial development and has given rise to a particular type of government policy response. The book addresses these timely issues and other such as the transformation of global production networks into global innovation networks, the link between corporate and national innovation strategies and movement up the global production value chain, and the fragmentation of production and the resulting increase in component and sub-assembly trade in the region. It also takes up the emergence of multinational corporations from developing countries and the efforts aimed at forging basic rules of corporate social responsibility and developing sound institutions for building a working framework of corporate governance in the Pacific. Written by some of the region’s most eminent and influential economists and political scientists, this volume will appeal to students and scholars working in the field of Asia Pacific studies as well as to businesspersons and policymakers taking decisions in the region.

Book Handbook of Social Infrastructure

Download or read book Handbook of Social Infrastructure written by Anna-Theresa Renner and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely Handbook showcases cutting-edge empirical and theoretical social science research to shed light on the role, aims and functioning of social infrastructure (SI). Leading scholars present unique insights on topics such as healthcare, childcare, education, employment, and SI for marginalised groups alongside cultural and recreational infrastructures. Ongoing global and regional crises have underscored the significance of SI services and facilities in enhancing individual well-being, social cohesion and equality. With this central tenet in mind, contributing authors challenge traditional views on public welfare systems throughout the Handbook to take into account the climate, care and housing crises. They provide an in-depth examination of the concept of SI and how it relates to different strands of research such as welfare state analysis and urbanism, connecting the field with other emerging strands of conceptualising socio-economic processes such as the foundational economy approach. Paving the way for further research, the Handbook of Social Infrastructure is a vital resource for students and scholars of sociology, regional and urban economics, cities, urban planning and geography, and public sector economics and finance. Policymakers will find it equally beneficial to inform their understanding of spatial planning, economic and social policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated notebook highlights the need for a change of paradigm in current flood management practices, one that acknowledges the wide-ranging and interdisciplinary benefits brought by public space design. Reassessing and improving established flood management methods, public spaces are faced with a new and enhanced role as mediators of flood adaptation able to integrate infrastructure and communities together in the management of flood water as an ultimate resource for urban resilience. The book specifically introduces a path towards a new perspective on flood adaptation through public space design, stressing the importance of local, bottom up, approaches. Deriving from a solution-directed investigation, which is particularly attentive to design, the book offers a wide range of systematized conceptual solutions of flood adaptation measures applicable in the design of public spaces. Through a commonly used vocabulary and simple technical notions, the book facilitates and accelerates the initial brainstorm phases of a public space project with flood adaptation capacities, enabling a direct application in contemporary practice. Furthermore, it offers a significant sample of real-case examples that may further assist the decision-making throughout design processes. Overall, the book envisions to challenge established professionals, such as engineers, architects or urban planners, to work and design with uncertainty in an era of an unprecedented climate.

  • Author : Helmut Haberl
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2016-07-01
  • ISBN : 3319333267
  • Pages : 651 pages

Download or read book Social Ecology written by Helmut Haberl and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the current state of the art in Social Ecology as practiced by the Vienna School of Social Ecology, globally one of the main research groups in this field. As a significant contribution to the growing literature on interdisciplinary sustainability studies, the book introduces the purpose and nature of Social Ecology and then places the “Vienna School” within the broader context of socioecological and other interdisciplinary environmental approaches. The conceptual and methodological foundations of Social Ecology are discussed in detail, allowing the reader to obtain a broad overview of current socioecological thinking. Issues covered include socio-metabolic transitions, socioecological approaches to land use, the relation between actor-centered and system approaches, a socioecological theory of labor and the importance of legacies, as conceived in Environmental History and in Long-Term Socio-Ecological Research. To underpin this overview empirically, the strengths of socioecological research are elucidated in cases of cutting-edge research, introducing a variety of themes the Vienna School has been tackling empirically over the past years. Given how the field is presented – reflecting research carried out on different scales, reaching from local to global as well as from past to present and future – and due to the way the book is structured, it is suitable for classroom use, as a primer, and also as an overview of how Social Ecology evolved, right up to its current research frontiers.
