Download or read book The Factors of Social Evolution Classic Reprint written by Theodore De Laguna and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Factors of Social Evolution The work which is here offered to the public is a discussion of one of the major problems of sociology. It represents an attempt at what has lately been called scientific synthesis. The materials and the considerations which it brings to gether extend far beyond the limits of any special discipline, as well as beyond the limits of any man's expert competence. It is not necessary to confess the hazards, or to insist upon the importance, of studies of this character. Ours is an age of specialists, and we are severe upon the errors of' one who lets his speculations range outside his proper field. But there are dangers also in the narrower view of things; and in the broader View there is always the possibility that an ob servation in one direction may compensate for confused per ception in another, and reason to hope that the larger contours may stand out with a new clearness. The author has tried, as far as pos sible, to use the empirical method of study, to find out whatever might be discovered rather than to search for support for theories and predispositions. An effort has also been made to avoid technical language. The purpose of the study is to trace the relation between the development Of society and the development of religion, that light may be thrown upon the relation Of religious and social questions of the present time. It goes forward on the assumption that human life is continuous, carrying results from the past into the present and preparing a way for the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Evolution of Religion These chapters were originally read to a small group of persons meeting in a private parlor in Boston, under the auspices of the local branch of The Free Religious Association of Amer ica. Not all which was written was read at any of these meet ings, but often many pages were omitted in order that the lecture might be followed by questions and discussions. The lectures have been carefully corrected, many pages excised, many more pages added, and the whole rewritten and thoroughly revised. My friend, John Haynes Holmes, minister of the Community Church in the city of New York, has read the whole of the manuscript, given me the benefit of his suggestions and cor rections, and written the foreword, which states briefly and pertinently that at which I have aimed in my book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kidd's "Social Evolution" This, of course, does not mean that we are not to derive all the help we can from the study Of the lower stages in the develop ment of that which we are trying to interpret. It does not mean that we are not to get what light we can by tracing the historic growth of the moral sentiments; nor that there is nothing to learn in seeking the genesis of the idea of God. It does not mean that the study of comparative anatomy is unessential to a knowledge of the human body. It does not mean that a knowledge of the process will not help us to an understanding of the product. It only means that antecedence is not identical with causality, and that similarity is not identity. It means that, having traced g back to f, and f to e, and so on back to a, the origin, we are then to find the key to the process, not in the starting-point, but in the whole process as seen from the end to the beginning. In other words, the true nature of anything can be known, not from the S5 of), but from the ré/log. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Social Heredity and Social Evolution

Download or read book Social Heredity and Social Evolution written by Herbert William Conn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Heredity and Social Evolution: The Other Side of Eugenics The application of the great laws of nature to the explanation of the history of the human race is one of the fascinating phases of science. In the study of the evolutionary processes of the organic world that has followed Darwin it has been generally as sumed that the laws which govern the rest of the animal world have also governed the evolution of mankind. That man holds a unique position in nature has been generally recognized; and some times this idea has been so prominent in the minds of scientists, as well as other classes of think ers, as to lead to the assumption that the develop ment of man has been a thing apart from the rest of the living world and due to some special stimulus. Most generally, however, it has been silently as sumed that mankind has been developed under the same kind of laws and forces that have been con cerned in the formation of the lower orders of nature. One of the more recent phases of this belief has found expression in the great interest taken in the modern study of eugenics; for this school is based upon the laws of inheritance as they have been determined by the study of the lower orders of nature which have then been applied to man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Societal Evolution: A Study of the Evolutionary Basis of the Science of Society The influence of evolutionary reasoning has reached out, then, beyond the field of its na tivity; and it is undeniable that it has had its effect upon the social sciences. But no one can say that the evolutionary principle, as commonly viewed by the social scientist, be he economist, political scientist, or sociologist, affords any such orientation, perspective, uni fication, inspiration, and positive aid as it does in the realm of the natural sciences. It is an idea which he may accept as a sort of phi losophy it lingers in vague form about the horizon; it is invoked, from time to time, in a general and unproductive sort of way. It is a tenet rather than an instrument for the fur thering of scientific knowledge, a thing to be discussed by way of formal logic and specula tion rather than proved and used over and over again as a scientific verity. It is no tool of research. If social scientists use the terms variation, selection, and so on, they mean nothing definite and actual by them; their use of these terms is vaguely analogical and does not help them to get anywhere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Towards Utopia: Being Speculations in Social Evolution Everybody is familiar with the conception of Utop a; and many among us believe that social evolution will presently culminate in an Utopia where all shall be good, wise, cultured, and affluent: but, whilst we have many popular imaginative descriptions of this completed future state, it is perhaps somewhat less usual to enquire what precisely are some of the individual natural processes by which that happy consummation can be brought about; what, if anything, can be done by us of to-day to hasten the progress; and what price if any, must he paid for Utopia. The present essay is a sample of the kind of answer which, as it seems to us, must be given to such questions; and is occupied with the attempt to trace out. to a certain extent, by what known processes, and by what modifications of the present social state, such Utopia may be brought about. Thro'out we have endeavored to steer clear of chimerical and fanciful assumptions that, however legitimate in pure fairy-tales, and however necessary thereto, are quite out of place in speculations concerning an Utopia that is asserted to be the destined outcome of a natural evolution of Society: and we have sought in preference to shape our course by the polestar of science.
