Book Sustaining physical activity following cardiac rehabilitation discharge

Download or read book Sustaining physical activity following cardiac rehabilitation discharge written by Kelly R. Evenson and published by RTI Press. This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because many patients reduce exercise following outpatient cardiac rehabilitation (CR), we developed an intervention to assist with the transition and evaluated its feasibility and preliminary efficacy using a one-group pretest–posttest design. Five CR patients were enrolled ~1 month prior to CR discharge and provided an activity tracker. Each week during CR they received a summary of their physical activity and steps. Following CR discharge, participants received an individualized report that included their physical activity and step history, information on specific features of the activity tracker, and encouraging messages from former CR patients for each of the next 6 weeks. Mixed model trajectory analyses were used to test the intervention effect separately for active minutes and steps modeling three study phases: pre-intervention (day activity tracking began to CR discharge), intervention (day following CR discharge to day when final report sent), and maintenance (day following the final report to ~1 month later). Activity tracking was successfully deployed and, with weekly reports following CR, may offset the usual decline in physical activity. When weekly reports ceased, a decline in steps/day occurred. A scaled-up intervention with a more rigorous study design with sufficient sample size can evaluate this approach further.

Book Psychological Approach to the Rehabilitation of Coronary Patients

Download or read book Psychological Approach to the Rehabilitation of Coronary Patients written by U. Stocksmeier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing frequency of coronary diseases, the still insufficient results of prevention have brought physicians to try to reduce as much as possible the con sequences of ischaemic heart disease. Coronary units and new treatments have some what reduced the dramatic complications of the acute phase; but after the latter, evil effects of the disease remain at the physiological, psychological and social level. It is the aim of rehabi~itation to analyze these problems, to reduce them or to solve them whenever possible. When this conception of "complete coronary care" took the lead, the necon ditioning effects of heart disease and of immobilization on physical conditi ons were emphasized: physical training programmes were prepared and their main lines and physiological effects are now fairly well known. But it was soon obvious that the psychological problems raised by the patient and his environment 'are equally important. Their approach is however much more difficult and their treatment particularly complex. So, the Council on Rehabilitation of the International Society of Cardiology is really grateful to Professor Dr. HALHUBER and Dr. Dr. STOCKSMEIER for giving the opportunity to specialists to discuss together this particular aspect of coronary disease. The discussions have been devoted to the methods of approaching the patient as well as to the therapeutic aspects and the role of psychologists in the rehabilitation programmes: some papers have been devoted also to the possible role of the personality as a risk factor in the development of the disease.

Book The Effect of Success Stories on Exercise Adherence to Newly Enrolled Cardiovascular Patients in Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Download or read book The Effect of Success Stories on Exercise Adherence to Newly Enrolled Cardiovascular Patients in Cardiac Rehabilitation Program written by Nidal Harb and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Although the physical and psychological benefits of exercise training in cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP) are well documented in literature, the efficacy of these prescribed exercises is still limited by the high drop rates and non-adherence. Many strategies and interventions have been employed to increase exercise adherence in cardiovascular patients in CRP with limited success. Although, the sharing of success stories has been used widely in different disciplines as an effective tool to promote behavioral change, however, there is a limited amount of literature about the use of success stories in health promotion. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of success stories on exercise self-efficacy, positive outcome expectations, and exercise adherence among cardiovascular patients in a phase II outpatient CRP.Theoretical Framework: Based on Bandura's (1997) social cognitive theory (SCT), the conceptual model guiding this study included success stories, exercise self-efficacy, and positive outcome expectations as the main concepts that determine the exercise adherence behavior. Methods: A pre-test/post-test experimental design was utilized in this study. A convenience sample of 128 participants of cardiovascular patients undergoing a phase II outpatient CRP were recruited and randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The participants in both study groups received the traditional educational printouts provided by outpatient CRP department. However, only the participants in the experimental group received the study intervention of success stories in the form of 10-minute DVD before starting the phase II outpatient CRP. The success stories DVD included interviews of two cardiovascular patients who previously completed the CRP; the patients discussed the benefits they gained from their CRP completion. These stories were utilized as a verbal persuasion method to improve the exercise self-efficacy beliefs (ESES) and outcome expectations (OEE) toward exercise adherence of the participants in the experimental group. Data were collected at three points in time when participants entered and took part in the outpatient CRP. At time point 1, pretest measures of the ESES and OEE were collected from the participants before their random assignment to treatment or control groups. At time point 2, posttest measures of ESES and OEE were collected from participants in the experimental group after they reviewed the educational printouts and watched the success stories DVD; posttest measures of ESES and OEE were collected from participants in the control group after they reviewed the educational printouts. Time 1 and time 2 measures were obtained from both groups before they started their medically supervised exercise training. Then, at point time 3, the exercise adherence data were collected at the end of the CRP from cardiovascular patients' medical records. Results: The findings of this study indicated that participants who listened to success stories had significantly higher exercise adherence rates, t(126) = 2.414, p = .017, and reported significant improvements in their exercise self-efficacy levels, t(126) = -2.44, p = .016, compared to participants in the control group. Groups did not differ significantly on outcome expectations for exercise, t(126) = -1.6, p = .11. Finally, the results show that the effect of success stories on exercise adherence was not mediated by the exercise self-efficacy, b = - .76, 95% CI [-4.13 to 2.29], or outcome expectations, b = -.60, 95% CI [-3.26 to 1.46].Conclusions: Success stories were found to be effective in promoting exercise adherence in cardiovascular patients in outpatient cardiac rehabilitation. Further research is needed to examine the length, dose, type, and content of success stories that can produce a significant impact on the patient health-related attitudes and behaviors.

Book Handbook of Social Cognition Applications

Download or read book Handbook of Social Cognition Applications written by Robert S. Wyer and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the Handbook follows the first edition by 10 years. The earlier edition was a promissory note, presaging the directions in which the then-emerging field of social cognition was likely to move. The field was then in its infancy and the areas of research and theory that came to dominate the field during the next decade were only beginning to surface. The concepts and methods used had frequently been borrowed from cognitive psychology and had been applied to phenomena in a very limited number of areas. Nevertheless, social cognition promised to develop rapidly into an important area of psychological inquiry that would ultimately have an impact on not only several areas of psychology but other fields as well. The promises made by the earlier edition have generally been fulfilled. Since its publication, social cognition has become one of the most active areas of research in the entire field of psychology; its influence has extended to health and clinical psychology, and personality, as well as to political science, organizational behavior, and marketing and consumer behavior. The impact of social cognition theory and research within a very short period of time is incontrovertible. The present volumes provide a comprehensive and detailed review of the theoretical and empirical work that has been performed during these years, and of its implications for information processing in a wide variety of domains. The handbook is divided into two volumes. The first provides an overview of basic research and theory in social information processing, covering the automatic and controlled processing of information and its implications for how information is encoded and stored in memory, the mental representation of persons -- including oneself -- and events, the role of procedural knowledge in information processing, inference processes, and response processes. Special attention is given to the cognitive determinants and consequences of affect and emotion. The second book provides detailed discussions of the role of information processing in specific areas such as stereotyping; communication and persuasion; political judgment; close relationships; organizational, clinical and health psychology; and consumer behavior. The contributors are theorists and researchers who have themselves carried out important studies in the areas to which their chapters pertain. In combination, the contents of this two-volume set provide a sophisticated and in-depth treatment of both theory and research in this major area of psychological inquiry and the directions in which it is likely to proceed in the future.
