Book Effects of the Superflex trademark Curriculum on the Social Cognition of Primary Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Effects of the Superflex trademark Curriculum on the Social Cognition of Primary Students with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Kaitlin Riemen Yadlosky and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students with ASD and ADHD often require intervention in social and perspective-taking skills due to deficits in social cognition. Intervention must be provided in a small group setting, using explicit instruction, frequent opportunities for practice, and immediate teacher reinforcement. A large number of materials and intervention programs have been developed to target the social skills of students with disabilities. The Superflex Curriculum (SC) is an intervention program that uses pre-made lessons to teach children to identify social expectations, monitor their behaviors, and modify them as needed. This study analyzed what effects students and teachers feel the SC has on the social and perspective taking skills of students with ASD and ADHD. Teachers and students report the SC is an effective intervention program. Behavior observations and teacher reports reflect an overall improvement in students' social and perspective taking skills. Differences between behaviors and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Book ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children Adolescents and Adults

Download or read book ADHD Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Children Adolescents and Adults written by Paul H. Wender and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Wender is a pioneer researcher and clinician who was one of the first to identify and treat children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, and later to notice the same pattern of symptoms in the parents of these children. He has now thoroughly revised and updated his classic handbook on the subject, adding more case histories, expanding the section on adults, and outlining the new drug treatments that have appeared since the last edition. Reviewing what is known about ADHD, its symptoms, its life course, its etiology, the usefulness of various treatments, and the value to the patient of education about the disorder, Wender brings together a wealth of information not available in any other volume. A clinician who has treated patients with ADHD for many years, he offers compelling firsthand accounts from men and women who offer dramatic insight into what it feels like to have ADHD and how it responds to medical treatment. Combining the insights of his clinical practice with his innovative research on pharmacological treatments of psychiatric disorders, Wender offers a wealth of practical information on where to seek help, the kinds and reliability of diagnostic tests, and the different approaches to treatment. He also identifies the drug treatments that can dramatically reduce symptoms and, when necessary, render patients more amenable to treatment for any residual psychological symptoms. The classic work on this ailment, ADHD is an indispensable source of help, hope, and understanding for parents and adults who suspect that they or someone they care about may suffer from this much misunderstood disorder.

  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Social Cognition written by Tricia Striano and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2009 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we perceive and interpret the actions of others is crucial if we are to develop into healthy adults. It has even been argued that a lack of social cognitive skills lays a strong foundation for a variety of atypical developmental disorders, including autism. Fortunately, our understanding of how humans process and interpret each other's actions has increased by leaps and bounds in the past decade. At the vanguard of these encouraging developments has been groundbreaking research in the fields of cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, and autism. Social Cognition: Development, Neuroscience and Autism is the first volume to fully integrate these areas of cutting-edge research on social cognition through contributions from some of the world's foremost experts in all three disciplines. The text is edited by distinguished development specialists who preface each section with chapter by chapter summaries that seamlessly link each of the contributing essays. Sections include related chapters on perspectives on social cognition, social cognition during infancy, social cognition and the adult brain, and social cognition: the challenge of autism. The text's final section serves as a commentary highlighting the fundamental issues that have been addressed in the text. Social Cognition: Development, Neuroscience and Autism is an indispensable addition to the rapidly expanding field of social cognition—and will provide valuable new insights on how we think and learn.

Book Brain Connectivity in Autism

Download or read book Brain Connectivity in Autism written by Rajesh K. Kana and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain's ability to process information crucially relies on connectivity. Understanding how the brain processes complex information and how such abilities are disrupted in individuals with neuropsychological disorders will require an improved understanding of brain connectivity. Autism is an intriguingly complex neurodevelopmental disorder with multidimensional symptoms and cognitive characteristics. A biological origin for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) had been proposed even in the earliest published accounts (Kanner, 1943; Asperger, 1944). Despite decades of research, a focal neurobiological marker for autism has been elusive. Nevertheless, disruptions in interregional and functional and anatomical connectivity have been a hallmark of neural functioning in ASD. Theoretical accounts of connectivity perceive ASD as a cognitive and neurobiological disorder associated with altered functioning of integrative circuitry. Neuroimaging studies have reported disruptions in functional connectivity (synchronization of activated brain areas) during cognitive tasks and during task-free resting states. While these insights are valuable, they do not address the time-lagged causality and directionality of such correlations. Despite the general promise of the connectivity account of ASD, inconsistencies and methodological differences among studies call for more thorough investigations. A comprehensive neurological account of ASD should incorporate functional, effective, and anatomical connectivity measures and test the diagnostic utility of such measures. In addition, questions pertaining to how cognitive and behavioral intervention can target connection abnormalities in ASD should be addressed. This research topic of the Frontiers in Human Neuroscience addresses “Brain Connectivity in Autism” primarily from cognitive neuroscience and neuroimaging perspectives.

Book Adaptive Behavior Assessment System II

Download or read book Adaptive Behavior Assessment System II written by Thomas Oakland and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-II summarizes information on adaptive behavior and skills as well as general issues in adaptive behavior assessment with the goal of promoting sound assessment practice during uses, interpretations, and applications of the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-II. Adaptive behavior and skills refer to personal qualities associated with the ability to meet one’s personal needs such as communication, self-care, socialization, etc. and those of others. Data from measures of adaptive behavior have been used most commonly in assessment and intervention services for persons with mental retardation. However, the display of adaptive behaviors and skills is relevant to all persons. The Adaptive Behavior Assessment System-II (ABAS-II) provides a comprehensive, norm-referenced assessment of the adaptive behavior and skills of individuals from birth through age 89. The comprehensive natures of the ABAS-II, ease in administration and scoring, and wide age range have resulted in its widespread use for a large number of assessment purposes. The book provides practical information and thus serves as a valuable resource for those who use the ABAS-II. Assists in the functional use of the ABAS-II Provides case studies illustrating use of the ABAS-II in comprehensive assessment and intervention planning Reviews scholarship on adaptive behaviors and skills Describes legal, ethical, and other professional standards and guidelines that apply to the use of the ABAS-II and other measures of adaptive behavior Discusses the use of the ABAS-II with autism, mental retardation; young children and those in elementary and secondary school; as well as incarcerated persons being evaluated for possible mental retardation

Book Social Anxiety and Social Cognition in Youth with Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Download or read book Social Anxiety and Social Cognition in Youth with Neurodevelopmental Disorders written by Grace Lee Simmons and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among children with neurodevelopmental disorders, those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) present with notable social impairment, heightened rates of social anxiety, and deficits in social cognition when compared to neurotypical peers. Because parent- and child-reports of social anxiety are frequently discrepant, conventional scientific wisdom dictates the inclusion of these separate reports when measuring symptoms and impairment. Social anxiety and social cognitive deficits are associated with poor functional outcomes, but research has minimally explored these constructs in youth with neurodevelopmental disorders. The present study examined the predictive weight of social anxiety and social cognitive impairment on adaptive functioning in a sample of 99 youth (ages: 7-17 years) with a diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, or SLD. Social cognition significantly predicted adaptive functioning impairments as well as clinician ratings of global functioning and clinical impairment. Parent and child ratings of social anxiety were significantly different; this discrepancy did not predict adaptive functioning, though it was predictive of clinician-rated impairment and approached significance in analyses of clinician-rated global functioning. These findings further clarify differential symptomatic paths to functional impairment in this population and inform mechanism-based treatment research addressing social impairment in youth with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Book Handbook of Executive Functioning

Download or read book Handbook of Executive Functioning written by Sam Goldstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Planning. Attention. Memory. Self-regulation. These and other core cognitive and behavioral operations of daily life comprise what we know as executive functioning (EF). But despite all we know, the concept has engendered multiple, often conflicting definitions and its components are sometimes loosely defined and poorly understood. The Handbook of Executive Functioning cuts through the confusion, analyzing both the whole and its parts in comprehensive, practical detail for scholar and clinician alike. Background chapters examine influential models of EF, tour the brain geography of the executive system and pose salient developmental questions. A section on practical implications relates early deficits in executive functioning to ADD and other disorders in children and considers autism and later-life dementias from an EF standpoint. Further chapters weigh the merits of widely used instruments for assessing executive functioning and review interventions for its enhancement, with special emphasis on children and adolescents. Featured in the Handbook: The development of hot and cool executive function in childhood and adolescence. A review of the use of executive function tasks in externalizing and internalizing disorders. Executive functioning as a mediator of age-related cognitive decline in adults. Treatment integrity in interventions that target executive function. Supporting and strengthening working memory in the classroom to enhance executive functioning. The Handbook of Executive Functioning is an essential resource for researchers, scientist-practitioners and graduate students in clinical child, school and educational psychology; child and adolescent psychiatry; neurobiology; developmental psychology; rehabilitation medicine/therapy and social work.
