Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Christianity in the New Era This is not a book of statistics, nor is it a cumulation from other books. I write of the things which I have seen with my own eyes, and experienced in my own life. I give my own opinions about them, and suggest what appear to me to be the true remedies. I have lived in manufacturing towns, mining areas, agricultural districts and the slums of the world's largest city. I have also spent three years as chaplain on the battle-fields of France. I have carefully observed the state of the Church and the social conditions of the people. I know, to some extent, what the returning soldiers expect of the Church and the State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Gospel and the New Era The social function of the Christian Church is to bring God more consciously into human relationships with a view to have the Christian life flourish at its best. The reconstruction period has brought an enlarging conception of the kingdom ideal which is leading the modern Church to recast some of its notions and to re adjust its methods, in order to broaden and intensify the personal religious life of the individual and to open up a larger field for social service. Download or read book Social Christianity Classic Reprint written by Hugh Price Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Christianity For many years I have obstinately resisted the importunity of valued friends who have urged me to publish a volume of sermons. I have not deemed any utterance of mine worthy permanent record. My too busy life affords no time for theological or literary elaboration. But of late the pressure to publish has greatly increased. Above all, it has come to my knowledge that several young Agnostics have been brought to Christ by reading some of the following sermons, which appeared in The Methodist Times. If the Divine Father is pleased to use me thus to bring back to Himself any of my wandering brothers, I dare not consult my own taste or preference any longer. And now that the Rubicon is crossed, I am comforted by the fact that, although the literary form of this volume must bear all the marks of haste inseparable from a very active and varied ministry, the exposition of Christianity which it contains is the slow fruit of a lifetime of observation, reflection, and experience. Book The New Social Order Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Social Order Classic Reprint written by John Fordyce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Social Order The following pages have been written for, and they are addressed to, the People. For the learned and the curious, there are abundant opportunities of becoming acquainted with the triumphs of the Gospel in the early pagan world; even within the last few years, several treatises have appeared on this suggestive theme. But these books are gener ally large, and they discuss questions that are not of engrossing interest to the Many. The author has tried to avoid all details and discussions not likely to attract the general reader, and to present a brief and popular account of some of the changes wrought in personal character and in social life by the Spirit of Jesus Christ. With what degree of success he has accomplished his self-imposed task, it is for others rather than himself to determine. Book Christianity and the Social Crisis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and the Social Crisis Classic Reprint written by Walter Rauschenbusch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Crisis Western civilization is passing through a social revolution unparalleled in history for scope and power. Its coming was inevitable. The religious, political, and intellectual revolutions of the past five centuries, which together created the modern world, necessarily had to culminate in an economic and social revolution such as is now upon us. By universal consent, this social crisis is the overshadowing problem of our generation. The industrial and commercial life of the advanced nations are in the throes of it. In politics all issues and methods are undergoing upheaval and re-alignment as the social movement advances. In the world of thought all the young and serious minds are absorbed in the solution of the social problems. Even literature and art point like compass-needles to this magnetic pole of all our thought. The social revolution has been slow in reaching our country. We have been exempt, not because we had solved the problems, but because we had not yet confronted them. We have now arrived, and all the characteristic conditions of American Hfe will henceforth combine to make the social struggle here more intense than anywhere else. Download or read book Christianity and the Social Order Classic Reprint written by R. J. Campbell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Order It may not be out of place to say a word as to the way in which I have come to be identified with the Socialist movement. The first and most obvious influence in this direction was the study of Christian origins, which led me gradually but irresistibly to see that the first Christian preachers did not know of any other gospel than that of a universal brotherhood on earth. I have never been anything else than a liberal in theology - all assertions to the contrary notwith standing - but my way of presenting the truth in the earlier years of my ministry was necessarily less clear and coherent than at present, for it rested too much on the other-worldism of con ventional Christian preaching. The realisation that this other-worldism was totally absent from primitive Christian thought forced me, like so many others, upon What was practically the Socialist position without any first-hand acquaint ance with the Socialist movement itself. Inow regard Socialism as the practical expression of Christian ethics and the evangel of Jesus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Church and the Social Problem

Download or read book The Church and the Social Problem written by Samuel Plantz and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Social Problem: A Study in Applied Christianity This volume is written with the conviction that the Christian Church of the twentieth century faces a crisis of the utmost importance; and that it can only meet the needs of the age by adapting its teaching and methods of work to the peculiar conditions of our times. This fact has been often pointed out during the past few years by men of masterly power, but it must be confessed that few of the workers in the Church have heard the call and earnestly assumed the task of applying Christian principles to the social problems of our modern life. Many pulpits seem stereotyped in thought and utterance, and many Churches cemented in the forms of their activity. While this condition pertains, there is a demand for the multiplication of literature on Christian Ethics, and the application of the Gospel to society. Book Social Regeneration

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Regeneration: The Work of Christianity I give in the following pages a summary of my reading and reflection on this great social ques tion, which seems to grow in interest every year. My conclusions have been forced upon me by a study of the fruits of Christianity as seen in the personal experiences of all classes and condi tions of society which, in my ministerial life, I have been called to share. The book has not been written with a view of instructing profes sors and teachers in universities and colleges. I have endeavored to be practical rather than philosophical; to be comprehended by the ordi nary reader, and to present Christianity as some thing not ideal simply, but as practical and most helpful for this present life we now live, as well as to keep alive the blessed hope of a heaven beyond the grave. Book The Social Message of Our Lord Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Social Message of Our Lord Classic Reprint written by William Melvin Bell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Message of Our Lord He functions in their faculties and lives through them in-to the complex whole of the city's life. There is weakness here in the religious body, and there is tremendous strength after its kind 1n the people of the world. But new moral life 15 gener ating in the city and flowing in the channels of the public life. Some evils are going up to judgment, and we trust to a last judgment. San Francisco's greatest need. In this intense and vital day is for a man, a prophet of the new order, to interpret more fully the fundamental truths and principles of God into the conscious life of the-city. He must spell it out with a long patience; he must say it so that men with their backs turned shall be startled by its moral demand. The man who can interpret gospel truth into the world's new conditions, experiences, and fellowships is the evangelist the multitudes are asking for to-day. In this regard Bishop Bell's book has a great mission and a great field. The author is a prophet of the new order. He has seen the vision and felt the power. He here tells us how it is that all social wrong passes under effectual eclipse, and how all social righteousness reigns unto the victory of life. God, indwelling his people, must fail of his whole purpose through them, or he will ultimately elevate and energize society with the life of heaven. A new light is breaking over Christendom. In this light we are getting a new vision of men and social relations, obligations, and destinies. All things are being reappraised and set at new values. Things are falling in the scale; the humanities are rising in the estimate. The constructive factor of this new era is conscience, hence there is vital assertion of practical righteousness in all affairs. God is in conscience asserting that righteousness. He is laying a blight upon selfishness and is causing sympathy to burst into flower. The Social Message of Our Lord has par-t in the illumination of our social problems and our social progress. You horrify me with your satisfied belly. Give me rather black bread and a blue sky. Now, on the other hand, the exclusive emphasis of the individualistic side is inadequate, and it is here that the church in recent years has been at fault. For the first three centuries the church pressed both sides of Christ's message and the result was the Christian conquest of the Roman empire. The industrial conditions were favorable for the reception of the doc trine of brotherhood. The burial guilds, or workingmen's beneficiary societies - known as Collegia - not only furnished a network of organizations for spreading this teaching, but, having legal protection, they were of great value in warding off persecution. The polit ical absolutism made precious the doctrine of the individual, and these burial guilds made ready for the Christian fraternity. For two or three centuries a pure universal brother hood was taught, but with the political suc cess of the empire under Constantine the doctrine of brotherhood began to be limited. It then became a church rather than a Chris. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
