It is rare for an academic book to dominate its field half a century later as Woodward’s Origins does southern history. Although its explanations are not accepted by all, the volume remains the starting point for every work examining the South in the era between Reconstruction and World War I. In writing Origins, Woodward deliberately set out to subvert much of the historical orthodoxy he had been taught during the 1930s, and he expected to be lambasted. But the revisionist movement was already afoot among white southern historians by 1951 and the book was hailed. Woodward’s work had an enormous interpretative impact on the historical academy and encapsulated the new trend of historiography of the American South, an approach that guided both black and white scholars through the civil rights movement and beyond. This easily accessible collection comprises four reviews of Origins from 1952 to 1978; “Origin of Origins,” a chapter from Woodward’s 1986 book Thinking Back: The Perils of Writing History that explains and reconsiders the context in which Origins was written; five articles from a fiftieth anniversary retrospective symposium on Origins; and three commentaries presented at the symposium and here published for the first time. Nearly fifty years ago the writer's father and grandfather collected some material relating to their own descent from Robert Booth of Saco, Me., which was published in a small pamphlet by a western cousin who was an amateur printer. It must be that a taste for this work had been inherited unsuspected, and that it had Iain dormant, only needing a favorable Opportunity for development. But be that as it may, what was intended as a single visit to the Lenox library in September of 1902 was soon followed by another and another, and in the course of a few days an interest had been awakened in the early history of New England, the lives of its. Pioneer settlers, their manners and customs, and the religious, social, political and commercial changes that have taken place there that will be of lifelong influence. In the course of time such a mass of manuscript accumulated that it became desirable to print it, and a small edition has been published in the hope that the information to be found therein will be of interest to others who are also descendants of some of the families mentioned. Plan and Scope. In the half dozen large historical collections in New York City there are several thousand genealogies, nearly all of which begin with some one emigrant ancestor, and trace his descendants of that surname down to the present day as fully as the compiler was able to do. Among these volumes are a few - only a small fraction of one per cent. Where the compiler has pursued a different plan, and beginning with his own father and mother has endeavored to trace back and ascertain, as far as may be, the different emigrants of whom he can say that their blood flows in his veins. Book excerpt: Interpretations of women in the antebellum period have long dwelt upon the notion of public versus private gender spheres. As part of the ongoing reevaluation of the prehistory of the women's movement, Carolyn Lawes challenges this paradigm and the primacy of class motivation. She studies the women of antebellum Worcester, Massachusetts, discovering that whatever their economic background, women there publicly worked to remake and improve their community in their own image. Lawes analyzes the organized social activism of the mostly middle-class, urban, white women of Worcester and finds that they were at the center of community life and leadership. Drawing on rich local history collections, Lawes weaves together information from city and state documents, court cases, medical records, church collections, newspapers, and diaries and letters to create a portrait of a group of women for whom constant personal and social change was the norm. Throughout Women and Reform in a New England Community, conventional women make seemingly unconventional choices. A wealthy Worcester matron helped spark a women-led rebellion against ministerial authority in the town's orthodox Calvinist church. Similarly, a close look at the town's sewing circles reveals that they were vehicles for political exchange as well as social gatherings that included men but intentionally restricted them to a subordinate role. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the women of Worcester had taken up explicitly political and social causes, such as an orphan asylum they founded, funded, and directed. Lawes argues that economic and personal instability rather than a desire for social control motivated women, even relatively privileged ones, into social activism. She concludes that the local activism of the women of Worcester stimulated, and was stimulated by, their interest in the first two national women's rights conventions, held in Worcester in 1850 and 1851. Far from being marginalized from the vital economic, social, and political issues of their day, the women of this antebellum New England community insisted upon being active and ongoing participants in the debates and decisions of their society and nation.
