Book excerpt: The war is over. The largest corporations in the world are now committed to sustainability. But, behind the public relations gloss, corporate executives and managers are perplexed. The majority of them have a genuine desire to work in an ethical and sustainable manner. Yet, when they engage with their stakeholders for that purpose, they unexpectedly encounter a world of hardball politics full of hostile activists, self-interested elites and unpredictable attacks. Unfortunately, corporate management is too often unskilled in this rough-and-tumble world. While managers rely on facts and rational analysis, their self-appointed critics have mastered the arts of political discourse, issue framing and media manipulation. At the same time, as corporations extend their global reach, their third-world stakeholder communities are beset with a variety of poverty-maintaining and sustainability-thwarting conditions. Rural and urban regions are closely intertwined and shaped by an ambiguous relationship. Rural regions are important deliverers of resources such as food, construction materials or energy and are thus enablers of these urban lifestyles. Rural regions are also places of aspiration and desire for a life closer to nature or in search for “wilderness” or “authenticity” of rural lifestyles, which people from cities would like to explore and experience during their visits. This ambiguous relationship is increasingly felt in rural regions in multiple ways e.g., through emigration of young people, the loss of jobs and economic possibilities, or the exploitation of land and infrastructure for businesses, enabling the flow of resources and capital into cities. Rural regions are therefore confronted with numerous challenges. For these regions it becomes important to continuously re-define or re-invent themselves in an increasingly urbanized and economized world, by at the same time protecting their natural assets and beauty and enabling both ecologically, socially and economically sustainable lifestyles. This publication aims to provide comprehensive information on the importance of social capital to achieve long lasting sustainable development that brings prosperity to rural areas. Sustainable development in this context is understood as positive development in all three dimensions of the sustainability triangle, namely economic, social and environmental. All of them equally important to create prosper rural areas with the ability to thrive. Social capital is the glue that helps people to organize themselves in groups in order to achieve socioeconomic benefits for the whole community. However, while the significance of social capital for economic and social development has been covered extensively in literature, the specific role it plays for sustainable development of rural areas at large could and should be further explored. For this, both theoretical and practical information is provided with eight illustrative case studies from Austria, Spain, Portugal and Türkiye that serve as best practice examples. These case studies show how communities achieve positive development in all three sustainability dimensions through the strengthening of social capital. At the end of the book, we discuss the significance of social capital for the success of these case studies and present a new definition of social capital that integrates the economic, social and environmental dimension.

Book excerpt: This book, in twelve chapters, aims to explore the intersection of three very different but related 'fuzzy' concepts - engaged governance, social capital, and sustainable development. Our thesis is that sustainable development in Asia (as elsewhere) depends on strong stocks of social capital. We imply in this statement, a prioritization of grass-roots, or demand driven development, one that may operate in the gaps left by ineffective state institutions, or more optimistically in a synergistic relation with the state. Sustainable development does not just happen; it needs to be managed. But what does that mean in the context of local needs, local direction, recognizing the intersection of environmental, economic and social imperatives? More specifically, who manages and how? The answers to these questions are not likely to be easy or obvious because 'good governance' is context specific. The primary focus of the book is a positive one - given the opportunity, what can be achieved even among the very poorest of the poor people, through their combined and co-operative actions. Cooperative actions and social capital may lead to 'engaged governance' to help achieve sustainable development. Since 'engagement' can be measured in terms of: an instrument that contributes to the achievement of both development policy and governance objective(s); a procedure that creates appropriate opportunities for participation and the provision of information to facilitate meaningful participation; and transforms the capacity of participants to engage and strengthen the governance system and democracy (Graham, et al., 2003; Guthrie, 2003), social capital as propounded by Putnam and others are likely to achieve all in different forms to help in sustainable development. The chapters within this Volume, including eight specific national and local contexts from selected countries, explore some complexity and interdependence of engaged governance, social capital and sustainable development. All country chapters are written by respective indigenous academics, and are based on primary surveys, field observations, direct interviews, other scholarly publications, and documents published by the respective government, the organizations or programs under discussion, as appropriate.

This research article will present different economic and development projects around the world whose success can be attributed to social capital with the aim of demonstrating the significance of this factor in the maintenance of sustainability practices. The main objective of this paper is to reveal the crucial role that social capital plays in ensuring the success of assorted community development projects. The findings of this study show that in different parts of the world, the collective consciousness that characterizes social capital is necessary for development projects across different industries to succeed.
