Book excerpt: Collaborative projects are increasingly common today due to the fact that many partners are leveraging technology to improve transactional efficiencies. Such projects required specialized knowledge of the partners to be integrated and therefore pose the challenges of inter organizational knowledge integration; integrating diverse knowledge bases across organizations (Bhandar et al 2006). Studies on knowledge integration and inter-organizational networks indicate that social capital, a resource based on social relationships, can influence knowledge integration and inter-organizational networks positively. Since partners in a collaborative project are likely to possess this resource due to their partnership, we adopt a knowledge integration view of collaborative projects to provide an understanding of the influence of social capital on these projects. Through a qualitative empirical study of a collaborative project involving three partner firms, this study shows how the different aspects of social capital can influence knowledge integration behavior of the partners for the project. The paper also indicates that presence of social capital alone does not ensure its influence; certain interventions help leverage the resource for its benefits. Implications to research and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: Collaboration offers promise for sustainable development, particularly in cases where direct involvement of affected stakeholders is essential. The actor network theory (ANT) process of translation explains how diverse interests could unite to solve environmental problems. This unique theoretical approach allows a role for human actors and non-human (material) intermediaries to organize, mobilize and spread innovation. Yet mechanisms by which these actors and 'actants' might negotiate cooperation are only beginning to be explored. Similarly, social capital research suggests that trust, reciprocation and networks might play a role in successful collaboration, while place-based governance research also suggests place can motivate cooperative action. This thesis analyzes a qualitative case study of a 10-year voluntary collaboration among government, non-governmental organizations and academic researchers to explore the role of social capital and place as potential mechanisms in facilitating collaboration. Using semi-structured- interviews, a photo-elicitation exercise, a policy overview and content analysis of presentations from this period, I examine the role of social capital and place in group formation and mobilization for three key projects, through a theoretical lens of ANT translation. My results indicate both factors played a role in facilitating collaboration. Strategic use of available social capital and place-making by key actors with persuasive skills overcame cultural and human barriers imposed by context to facilitate an agreement to cooperate. Other key actors contributed to the stabilization and mobilization of the group, which sustained the group, achieved immediate goals and built social capital for new initiatives, including a sense of individual empowerment. Shared place identity created by place-making motivated cooperation with minimal conflict: participants' place meanings merged with the shared identity to create nuanced, supportive motivations. The individual empowerment resulting from successful projects encouraged participants to reinvest in the group, or apply new knowledge elsewhere. Within the context of the ANT translation process, this case study demonstrated mechanisms to facilitate, sustain and propagate collaboration, and provided empirical evidence of the theorized diffusion of innovation from micro to macro society.

It is only lately, however, that researchers in information technology and knowledge management have begun to explore the idea of social capital in relation to their fields. This collection of thirteen essays by computer scientists, sociologists, communication specialists, economists, and others presents a multidisciplinary look at this particular intersection of information technology and social science and the need to adopt a sociotechnical perspective.For the most part the contributors take a positive view of the interplay of social capital, knowledge sharing, and community building. Some essays look at specific instances, including the on-line and face-to-face relationships of a community of athletes, the building of social capital among Iranian NGOs, and the Internet-based communities created by the open-source movement, while others discuss more general ideas of civic and personal communities. The last four essays examine computer applications that augment social capital, including topic- and member-centered communications spaces such as the Expert Finder and the Loops system and virtual repositories of knowledge such as the Answer Garden and Pearls of Wisdom.
