Book Social Capital Development A Case based Qualitative Study on the Internationalization Process of Costa Rican Knowledgeintensive SMEs

Download or read book Social Capital Development A Case based Qualitative Study on the Internationalization Process of Costa Rican Knowledgeintensive SMEs written by Luis Hernán Zarate Montero and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Social Capital and its Impact on Born Transnational Firms

Download or read book Social Capital and its Impact on Born Transnational Firms written by Martin Krikken and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-05 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent literature on international entrepreneurship hints toward an increasing number of firms engaging in business activities across national borders from or near their inception. Employing the transnational organization model to cope with hypercompetitive markets, the so-called born transnational firms represent a rather new prototype of such rapidly internationalizing firms and appear to be prime candidates of integrating value-added processes in multiple countries in a timely manner. Martin Krikken aims at shedding light on the nature of this distinct and under-researched type of international start-up by assessing the impact of social capital on its corporate flexibility. He illuminates how born transnational firms utilize networks of relationships to increase their capacity to adapt to environmental change.

Book Social Capital as a Resource for Migrant Entrepreneurship

Download or read book Social Capital as a Resource for Migrant Entrepreneurship written by Elena Sommer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her explorative study that is based on data from 62 qualitative interviews, Elena Sommer examines the use of social capital for entrepreneurial activities of self-employed migrants from the former Soviet Union in Germany. She analyses what type of social capital is used by migrants as a resource for the formation and development of small businesses and how entrepreneurial social networks of migrants change over time. The study illustrates that the use of business-related social relationships of the interviewed self-employed depends on the company's market strategy as well as on access to relevant social networks.

Book Turning Social Capital Into Business

Download or read book Turning Social Capital Into Business written by Angelika Lindstrand and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of using personal networks have in recent years become a topic of interest in the research area that focuses on the internationalization process of the firm. Few studies have, however, used the concept of social capital when studying the internationalization process of high-tech SMEs. In this explorative case study, ten Swedish SMEs in the biotech business have been examined in order to see how they use social capital for accessing the critical resources that they need in their internationalization process. The results of the study indicate that the usefulness of social capital changes during this process and that the wrong perception of social capital's usefulness can lead to unsuccessful internationalization.

Book Organizational Social Capital Time and International Family Smes

Download or read book Organizational Social Capital Time and International Family Smes written by Zografia Bika and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous studies on family-SME internationalization have largely focused on what resources are needed to drive an incremental process rather than how resource management occurs in historical time. This paper focuses on the latter, adopting a social capital perspective (capturing both internal, i.e. among family-SME board members, and external, cross border agent dyads, relations) in order to decipher case study data from the East of England. Findings show that it is not the presence or absence of organizational-social-capital that affects family-SME internationalization success but rather its variable use over the years driven by the future pursuit of longevity, not growth. Key within this context is the variable use of the international expertise and management capability of non-family managers in the family SME intra-organizational context. Ultimately this may lead to change and learning that occurs erratically, often including reversals, without causing family-SME progression across a sequence of incremental stages.

Book The Social Capital that Bridges CSR Programs and Corporate Sustainability

Download or read book The Social Capital that Bridges CSR Programs and Corporate Sustainability written by Risa Bhinekawati and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there have been debates in the literature about the role of companies in dealing with broad social issues in developing countries, and the need for empirical research to investigate how companies play their 'public roles' in improving social condition in such context. The literature on sustainable development, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and corporate sustainability are interrelated but need to be clarified, especially in the context of developing countries. Some experts strongly argue for social capital as an alternative way of improving the livelihood of low-income people in developing countries, but empirical evidence is needed to support this. Therefore, this research has two objectives. First, to investigate the actual role of a company in contributing to sustainable development in a developing country, and second, to explore why and how the concepts of sustainable development, CSR programs, social capital, and corporate sustainability are interrelated and evolve over time. This research used an exploratory qualitative case study to understand the evolution of the linkages between the four concepts longitudinally, over periods ranging from 15 to 40 years. A single case study of Astra International (Astra) in the context of Indonesia was chosen as an exemplary case study for theoretical or purposive sampling. Three CSR programs dealing with different social issues were chosen as embedded cases: 1) micro, small and medium enterprise development addressing weak local supply chain problems; 2) a manufacturing polytechnic founded to mitigate the scarcity of skilled labour; and 3) palm oil farmers' development dealing with poverty and social conflicts surrounding the company's palm oil plantations. This research found that a company can actually play 'public role' in contributing to solving sustainable development issues of a developing country. There are similar patterns of linkages between sustainable development, CSR programs, social capital and corporate sustainability across the three cases. In this study, CSR programs were driven by the company's genuine intentions to contribute to sustainable development by solving social issues in fulfilling its business needs. By investing in CSR programs, the company built social relationships (bonding and bridging), provided resources (management and technical competence, finance access and market access) for CSR programs stakeholders, and generated collective action ('win-win partnerships') in achieving its sustainability goals. The study found that enhanced social capital enabled the company to achieve higher economic, social and environmental performance, simultaneously, thereby looping back to its contribution to sustainable development of Indonesia. These research findings are amalgamated into a theoretical model that links sustainable development (as driving forces), CSR programs (as corporate inputs, actions and process), social capital (as outputs of CSR programs), and corporate sustainability (as outcomes of CSR programs). Such a model can be used by managers to achieve business sustainability, as well as by researchers seeking to understand CSR programs. This study finds that it is possible for companies to be responsible and yet profitable in developing countries like Indonesia, despite challenges of poverty, weak supply chains, skilled labour scarcity, social conflicts and a lack of government oversight.

Book Social Capital Types and Internationalization

Download or read book Social Capital Types and Internationalization written by Shameen Prashantham and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small business enterprises (SMEs) from emerging economies have become active participants in international markets. Seeking to capitalize on their unique skills and capabilities and achieve rapid growth and diversify the sources of their revenue streams, SMEs have used their social capital to penetrate foreign markets and acquire market share. In this study we focus on Indian software producers who have used their ethnic ties to enter foreign markets. Our analyses of 96 SMEs suggest that bonding social capital, arising from friendship and kinship relationships, enhances SMEs' ability to adopt and implement higher and more costly modes of entry to international markets. Bridging social capital (between dissimilar groups) enables SMEs to gain a greater percentage of revenues from foreign markets.

Book Doing Participant Observation in Your Own Organization

Download or read book Doing Participant Observation in Your Own Organization written by Mikhaylov and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case is based on the research project I conducted for my PhD dissertation. The research objectives were to examine the process of cultural knowledge creation and to address the role of social capital in this process. While many studies discuss global social capital and its role in the development of global mindset and expatriate adjustments to new working environments, few studies connect social capital to cultural knowledge creation and almost none use participant observation in multiple locations and combine it with other data collection methods. I collected data at four international business management programs in three countries, Finland, Czech Republic, and Ecuador. At the time of the data collection, I was a faculty member at the researched programs. Although I combined interviews and document analysis with participant observation as the data collection methods, this case specifically addresses participant observation research conducted by a current employee within an organization. Specifically, it discusses the challenges of combining two distinct roles of a participant and an observer. In addition, the issues of conducting research in an educational environment are addressed.
