Book excerpt: The currency of social capital serves as an important function given the capacity to generate external access (getting to) and internal accountability (getting through) for individuals and institutions alike. Pierre Bourdieu (1986) defines social capital as “the aggregate of the actual or potential resources which are linked to possession of a durable network of more or less institutionalized relationships of mutual acquaintance and recognition or in other words, to membership in a group” (p. 251). Social capital contains embedded resources as a tool for manifesting opportunities and options among individuals and groups. Inevitably, the aforementioned opportunities and options become reflective of the depth and breadth of access and accountability experienced by the individual and institution. As educational stakeholders, we must consistently challenge ourselves with the question, “How do K-12 schools and colleges and universities accomplish shared, egalitarian goals of achieving access and accountability?” Such goals become fundamental toward ensuring students matriculating through K-12 and higher education, irrespective of background, are provided the caliber of education and schooling experience to prepare them for economic mobility and social stability. To that end, the volume, Contemporary Perspectives on Social Capital in Educational Contexts (2019), as part of the book series, Contemporary Perspectives on Capital in Educational Contexts, offers a unique opportunity to explore social capital as a currency conduit for creating external access and internal accountability for K-12 and higher education. The commonalities of social capital emerging within the 12 chapters of the volume include the following: 1) Social Capital as Human Connectedness; 2) Social Capital as Strategic Advocacy; 3) Social Capital as Intentional Engagement; and 4) Social Capital as Culturally-Responsive Leadership. Thus, it becomes important for institutions of education (i.e. secondary, postsecondary, continuing) and individuals to assume efforts with intentionality and deliberateness to promote access and accountability.

This volume examines the educational problem of difficult participation in formal education and the non-possession of educational certificates in a global and multi-level perspective - with reference to Cameroon and Germany as two distinct places within the modern world system. The author, with her transnational experiences in both countries uses a data set of 138 at-risk young adults to highlight the specific educational meaning of social capital and to underline the need for analyzing educational problems in a multi-level comparative perspective. The book concludes that context matters and emphasizes on the need for the creation of a more equitable social and economic development policy which counteracts the inequality that is inherent in most centre - peripheral relations. About the Author: Brendan Ngeloo Abamukong holds a PhD in Educational Science and has worked as a research and teaching assistant at the Faculty of Human Sciences, department of Education at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, Germany. She has currently moved to the Netherlands where she intends to continue her carrier in both educational research and practice.

The achievement gap is particularly pronounced for Mexican-Americans. By employing mixed-methods research techniques, Ream links emergent literature on social capital with research on student mobility to investigate student performance among Mexican-American and non-Latino White adolescents. Findings underscore the prevalence of student mobility, particularly among Mexican-origin youth, and its impingement on both the availability and convertibility of the resources embedded in their social networks. Results also suggest that minority and non-minority students fortify social ties in different ways, and that these differences have implications for the educational utility of social capital.

Latino Education: An Agenda for Community Action Research conceptualizes and illustrates the theoretical framework for the NLERAP agenda and its projects. This framework is grounded in three overlapping areas of scholarship and activism, which are reflected within the chapters in this volume: critical studies, illuminating and analyzing the status of people of color in the United States; Latino/a educational research, capturing the sociohistorical, cultural, and political schooling experiences of U.S. Latino/a communities; and participatory action research, exemplifying a liberation-oriented methodology for truly transformative education. The volume includes both descriptive educational research and critical analyses of previous research and educational agendas related to Latino/a communities in the United States. According to current U.S. Census data, Latinos now comprise the largest minority group in the total U.S. population. Historically, reflecting larger sociohistorical and economic inequalities in U.S. society, the Latino community has not been well served by U.S. public school systems. Book excerpt: Though an increasing number of Latino students is attending college upon graduation from high school, the vast majority of these students, even if they are high-achieving students who could attend a four-year college or university, choose to enroll into two-year community colleges. This study discusses the process by which high-achieving, low-income, first-generation Latino students make college choices. This study uses McDonough's college choice model and Stanton-Salazar's social capital framework on institutional and protective agents to analyze student interview data to help explain how social class, schooling experiences, families, and student perceptions impact college choices and opportunities for Latino students. The results of this study and previous research suggest educational practices and policies which would improve young Latino's access to four-year colleges.

The purpose of this book is to present the current state of the art with respect to research on effective instructional programs for Latino students in elementary and secondary grades. Surprisingly, this has not been done before; there are many books on the situation of Latino students in U.S. schools, but none so far have reviewed research on the outcomes of programs designed to enhance the academic achievement of these students. The chapters represent a broad range of methodologies, from experimental to correlational to descriptive, and the solutions they propose are extremely diverse. Each examines, in its own way, programs and practices that are showing success. Book excerpt: This study examined the influence of social capital on Latino students' participation in college preparatory courses. Survey and focus group data were collected from a sample of Latino high school senior students in an urban high school in southeast Texas. The High School Follow-Up Survey (Leal, 2008), was used to ascertain the level of social capital reported by students. The survey instrument was divided into seven components (attitude toward college, academic achievement, teacher expectations and interactions, college readiness, school-wide support, guidance and counseling, and parent engagement) of social capital. Reported results also indicated Latino students' perceived educational experiences in terms of preparation for college, including academic preparedness and college knowledge. Students were divided into two groups by their course enrollment: college preparatory courses and no college preparatory courses. Quantitative data were analyzed using a two-tailed independent t- test to determine if there was a statistically significant mean difference between the two student groups. An inductive coding process was used to analyze the qualitative data. Quantitative analysis demonstrated that there was a statistically significant mean difference reported in social capital by Latino students in six of the seven components of social capital. The "Parent Engagement" component was the only component that did not reflect a statistically significant mean difference between the two student groups. Overall, the qualitative analysis illustrated the Latino students felt improvement could be made in the area of having more advanced courses available, providing more college information, teaching study skills, and providing more counseling.
