Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates how different dimensions of social capital and institutional quality are related to innovation activity and its utilisation. For reasons of data availability, previous studies have included mainly patenting data. This study complements the previous studies by analysing smaller sample, but including more indicators of innovation. Data for 29 European countries are analysed. As an alternative to usual analysing methods, cluster analysis is used to overcome the problem of small sample. First, cluster analysis is conducted to examine the similarities and differences in various aspects of innovation activity and utilisation of innovations. Next, the social capital and institutional quality are considered as possible factors of innovation next to the Ramp;D and human capital. The findings supported the idea that different dimensions of social capital have a different impact on innovation activity; the results concerning the utilisation of innovations were mixed.

The creation of networks and trust, ideas central to mainstream thinking about social capital, seem to be fundamental in allowing change to occur smoothly. This book proposes certain designs, that appear to encourage the social interactions of sense of belonging that lie at the heart of the idea about social capital. The role of social capital in the strategic organisation of family businesses are also explored. While managers at other firms and government bureaucratic officials have a positive and monotonic relationship with performance, that for social capital from politicians has a negative relationship with performance for non-family businesses.

The contributors provide theoretically grounded and empirically-rich findings indicating that governance and regulation affect innovation directly and indirectly through interaction with other drivers of innovation. The direct effects are positive in the case of governance quality and prescriptive regulations that set standards for compliance. However, the direct effects of corporate governance are not uniform and depend on the corporate governance dimension under investigation. The authors demonstrate that the direct effects are only part of the story. Both governance and regulatory standards interact with the level of competition and the distance to the technology frontier that may have complementary or offsetting effects. Overall, the findings in the book indicate that the relationship between innovation and its potential determinants is more complex and hence calls for more nuanced policy design compared to what is assumed in policy statements by national and international policy actors.
