In spite of the fact that poly-drug use and illegal use of drug is a crime, many youths still indulged in it due to the merriment moment they derive from it. In the light of these, some selected youth in Ede, Osun State made it known to the researcher that they consume drugs to reason well or meditate and to eliminate phobia. Not only that, but illicit drugs use among youths has ravaged Nigeria. The social and biological implications of drugs prevailing in the area and especially the knowledge and attitude to drug usage, the types of drugs being consumed, drug use pattern and evolving risk behaviour and factors influencing the usage of drugs among youth, thus seem worth of exploration. It is on this basis that this study examined the social and biological implication of drug usage among youths in Ede, Osun State. A questionnaire was the main instrument adopted to collect data for the study. A multistage sampling technique was adopted to reach the respondents as a result of which 200 residents of Ede at these selected communities: Orita fogo, Sagba joint, Abogunde Joint, Orita Akala, Atapara joint, Sabo agbongbe, Oke Obada joint, Owode-Ede joint, Laoye joint, Agate, Joint and Isibo Joint in Osun State were involved in the study. At the end of data collection, 200 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved and treated for data analysis. The data generated were analysed and interpreted with the aid of tabular distribution of respondents and simple frequency with percentage.

Book excerpt: Gender-based violence has a direct impact on a range of women's reproductive health problems, including adolescent pregnancy, high-risk sexual behavior, sexually transmitted diseases, neonatal and maternal mortality, and chronic pelvic pain. To facilitate integration of these two areas, the Population Council's Ebert Program on Critical Issues in Reproductive Health and the Health and Development Policy Project met together in November 1993. It has been demonstrated that women who have been sexually abused as children are at increased risk of early initiation of intercourse, multiple partners, unprotected sex, prostitution, drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and low self-esteem. Although most societies condemn incest and forced intercourse with an unmarried virgin, coerced sex within marriage or with a sexually experienced woman may be tolerated. The general paucity of research on coerced sex reflects the more general avoidance of issues of gender and power. Seminar participants identified six priority areas for research: sociocultural contexts that shape and support sexual coercion; the integration of questions on sexual violence into ongoing research on AIDS, sexuality, and reproductive health in order to gain prevalence data; the cultural meanings attached to sexual trauma; the physical and psychological consequences of sexual coercion; processes within the criminal justice, legal, media, and medical care systems that perpetuate sexual victimization; and effective interventions.

Book excerpt: The Managed Body productively complicates ‘menstrual hygiene management’ (MHM)—a growing social movement to support menstruating girls in the Global South. Bobel offers an invested critique of the complicated discourses of MHM including its conceptual and practical links with the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) development sector, human rights and ‘the girling of development.’ Drawing on analysis of in-depth interviews, participant observations and the digital materials of NGOs and social businesses, Bobel shows how MHM frames problems and solutions to capture attention and direct resources to this highly-tabooed topic. She asserts that MHM organizations often inadvertently rely upon weak evidence and spectacularized representations to make the claim of a ‘hygienic crisis’ that authorizes rescue. And, she argues, the largely product-based solutions that follow fail to challenge the social construction of the menstrual body as dirty and in need of concealment. While cast as fundamental to preserving girls’ dignity, MHM prioritizes ‘technological fixes’ that teach girls to discipline their developing bodies vis a vis consumer culture, a move that actually accommodates more than it resists the core problem of menstrual stigma.

Digital media and network technologies are now part of everyday life. The Internet has become the backbone of communication, commerce, and media; the ubiquitous mobile phone connects us with others as it removes us from any stable sense of location. Networked Publics examines the ways that the social and cultural shifts created by these technologies have transformed our relationships to (and definitions of) place, culture, politics, and infrastructure. Four chapters—each by an interdisciplinary team of scholars using collaborative software—provide a synoptic overview along with illustrative case studies. The chapter on place describes how digital networks enable us to be present in physical and networked places simultaneously—often at the expense of nondigital commitments. The chapter on culture explores the growth and impact of amateur-produced and remixed content online. Produced in a robust plasticized format, the plates can be used as either a guide for laboratory and field workers in endemic countries, or a teaching aid for students and trainees. The aim is to help the microscopist ascertain the presence of parasites in feces, whether they be minute protozoan cysts or large helminth eggs, and to identify them correctly. With this goal in mind, the bench aids include pertinent laboratory instructions as well as high-quality images. The photomicrographs illustrate diagnostic features of each of the parasites as they appear in different preparations and at different magnifications. Each photomicrograph is produced with a measuring bar and accompanied by a short explanatory legend, which draws attention to distinctive features that help confirm diagnosis. Helminth eggs are illustrated in the first 36 photomicrographs, which show the diagnostic stages of the most common helminthes, including nematodes, cestodes, schistosomes, and other trematodes. The remaining photomicrographs offer advice on the more difficult task of detecting and identifying intestinal protozoan trophozoites and cysts. Relevant laboratory techniques are described on the reverse side of the plates.
