Download or read book Perspectives on the Social Sciences in Canada written by Tom N. Guinsberg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1974-12-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers included in this volume were originally presented at a conference to commemorate the opening of the Social Science Centre at the University of Western Ontario in 1973. Participants were asked to take stock of the development of their disciplines in Canada, to assay the contours of current endeavours, and to comment upon avenues of future research. Their efforts mark what is believed to be the first collective assessment of the social sciences in Canada. The contributors include: Nathan Keyfitz on sociology, C.B. Macpherson on political science; H.G. Johnson on economics; Ramsay Cook on history; and M. Rokeach on the place of values in Canadian social science. Commentaries on the papers are also included. Each author has addressed himself to one or more of the following matters: the degree to which the disciplines as practised in Canada are linked to or differentiated from their practice elsewhere; the benefits and drawbacks of a 'nationalistic' approach to scholarship in the social sciences; the contributions of Canadian scholarship to the study of society in general and Canadian society in particular; the interaction among the social sciences in Canada and the need for inter-disciplinary studies; and the unfulfilled agenda of Canadian social science. The assessments thus delineate the peculiar problems of the social sciences in Canada as well as some of the overall problems within and among the disciplines themselves.

Download or read book Making Knowledge Count written by Peter Harries-Jones and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1991 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Largely due to the impact of human rights legislation, especially in Canada, the radical dissent of the 1960s has been replaced by the more co-operative framework of social advocacy. Political activity is no longer necessarily radical or rooted in social class but instead expresses broad themes of cultural aspiration. Consequently, social activists and social scientists need a new understanding of the role of dissent in society. Peter Harries-Jones and the contributing authors provide that understanding in Making Knowledge Count.
Download or read book Measuring the Mosaic written by Rick Helmes-Hayes and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measuring the Mosaic is a comprehensive intellectual biography of John Porter (1921-1979), author of The Vertical Mosaic (1965), preeminent Canadian sociologist of his time, and one of Canada's most celebrated scholars. In the first biography of this important figure, Rick Helmes-Hayes provides a detailed account of Porter's life and an in-depth assessment of his extensive writings on class, power, educational opportunity, social mobility, and democracy. While assessing Porter's place in the historical development of Canadian social science, Helmes-Hayes also examines the economic, social, political and scholarly circumstances - including the Depression, World War II, post-war reconstruction, the baby boom, and the growth of universities - that contoured Porter's political and academic views. Using extensive archival research, correspondence, and over fifty original interviews with family, colleagues, and friends, Measuring the Mosaic stresses Porter's remarkable contributions as a scholar, academic statesman, senior administrator at Carleton University, and engaged, practical public intellectual.

Download or read book Ideological Perspectives on Canada written by M. Patricia Marchak and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marchak argues that liberalism and socialism have many commonalities, such as the goals of equality and freedom for citizens. Corporatism, however, is opposed to equality and promotes an authoritarian hierarchy, resembling the older conservative ideology. To support her argument, Marchak provides a general overview of the study of ideologies, analyzes liberalism and socialism in the context of Canada, and uses Marxist theory to explain past and present class structure and the emergence of a corporatist social structure. A valuable contribution to the debate about the society we live in, Ideological Perspectives on Canada attempts to look at ideologies from an objective standpoint, while admitting that analysts can never fully remove themselves from the web of their own society, which in the Canadian case is steeped in liberalism, socialism, and corporatism.

Download or read book Ethnic Relations in Canada written by Raymond Breton and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005-10-13 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction by Jeffrey Reitz focuses on the evolution of Breton's distinctive institutional framework, which both extends and in some ways alters John Porter's classic analysis in The Vertical Mosaic. Reitz shows how Breton's original concept of "institutional completeness" has been extended to provide a comprehensive framework for the institutional analysis of inter-ethnic relations, creating a unified theoretical structure that has reshaped the study of inter-ethnic relations in Canada and points toward a future research agenda.
