Book Consider the Birds

    Book Details:
  • Author : Debbie Blue
  • Publisher : Abingdon Press
  • Release : 2013-08-20
  • ISBN : 1426775903
  • Pages : 138 pages

Download or read book Consider the Birds written by Debbie Blue and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From biblical times to today, humans have found meaning and significance in the actions and symbolism of birds. We admire their mystery and manners, their strength and fragility, their beauty and their ugliness—and perhaps compare these very characteristics to their own lives in the process. Though admired today, the birds of Scripture are largely unseen and underappreciated. From the well-known image of the dove to the birds that gorge on the flesh of the defeated “beast” in Revelation, birds play a dynamic part in Scripture. They bring bread to the prophets. They are food for the wanderers. As sacrifices, they are the currency of mercy. Highlighting 10 birds throughout Scripture, author Debbie Blue explores their significance in both familiar and unfamiliar biblical stories and illustrates how and why they have represented humanity across culture, Christian tradition, art, and contemporary psyche. With these (usually) minor characters at the forefront of human imaginations, poignant life lessons illuminate such qualities as desire and gratitude, power and vulnerability, insignificance and importance—even as readers gain a better understanding that God’s mysterious grace is sometimes most evident in His simplest of creatures.

Book excerpt: This special edition of the Lectures on Faith from Zion’s Camp Books is formatted for convenience on an eReader, with more than 100 internal links to scriptures and citations. We hope it will give you a great reading experience! The Lectures on Faith were originally prepared as materials for the School of the Prophets in Kirtland, Ohio in 1834 and were included in the Doctrine and Covenants from 1835 to 1921. Although the Lectures on Faith have never been accepted as revelation by the body of the church (and so were removed from the Doctrine and Covenants in 1921), they contain important doctrinal insights that can help anyone seeking to learn more about faith and come closer to Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. President Joseph Fielding Smith noted, “I suppose that the rising generation knows little about the Lectures on Faith. . . . In my own judgment, these Lectures are of great value and should be studied. . . . I consider them to be of extreme value in the study of the gospel of Jesus Christ.” (Joseph Fielding Smith, Seek Ye Earnestly. Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1970.) Elder Bruce R. McConkie of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has stated the lectures contain “some of the best lesson material ever prepared on the Godhead; on the character, perfections, and attributes of God; on faith, miracles, and sacrifice. They can be studied with great profit by all gospel scholars.” (Bruce R. McConkie, Mormon Doctrine. Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1966.)

Book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird

Download or read book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird written by Jack E. Davis and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book Asking What No More Whys

Download or read book Asking What No More Whys written by Wilma Marler and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-05-28 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of being the victim of threats and related actions served as the predictor of my life journey. My writing about my anger at the outcome of that event led a professor to suggest I change my major from sociology to journalism. Although I did not heed that suggestion, I am following that advice now. I was trapped in my anger, and it seemed every day there was a new inquiry of why this or why that. In changing the question from why to what, I discovered Gods reason for my journey. Questioning the reason for events elicits from God the response children are prone to get from parentsbecause I said so or because I am your parent. God is my Father, and I am His child. God received the same response that my parents received to that explanation: I chose to be angry. Once I learned that anger was my choice, God could patiently and lovingly lead me to my ministry. Two days after losing my sister to cancer, I understood the lesson. Being a minister is a title, or label. The what of my journey with God is to be available to minister to those individuals He places in my life. Through obedience to God, the what in my life became anger of motivation in my life. It was anger that taught me to ask what, and the lesson to be shared with others is start asking what.
