Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Schubert Studies

  • Author : Brian Newbould
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351549944
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book Schubert Studies written by Brian Newbould and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schubert Studies comprises eleven essays by renowned Schubert scholars and performers. The volume sheds light on certain aspects of Schubert‘s music and biography which have hitherto remained relatively neglected, or which warrant further investigation. Musical topics include analyses of tempo conventions, transitional procedures and rhythmic organization. There are reassessments of several works, using autograph research, performing experience and other approaches; while assumptions as to the extent of Schubert‘s influence on later Czech composers are also brought into question. Concerns with aspects of Schubert‘s biography, in particular the social and musical circles in which he moved, come under examination in several essays. The final two chapters deal specifically with the composer‘s relationships with women, and the psychological and physiological illnesses from which he suffered. Each of the essays here charts new and existing evidence to provide fresh perspectives on these aspects of Schubert‘s life and music, making this volume an indispensable tool for scholars concerned with his work.

Book Vienna Meets Berlin

  • Author : John Warren
  • Publisher : Peter Lang

  • ISBN : 9783039118533
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Vienna Meets Berlin written by John Warren and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume is based on papers given at the London Symposium 'Vienna Meets Berlin: Culture in the Metropolis Between the Wars' which took place at the Institute of Germanic Studies in December 2001. The book surveys the cultural links between Vienna and Berlin with a focus on the inter-war years and some post-1945 continuities. It includes a centenary tribute to Ödön von Horváth and contributions on theatre, film, journalism (the feuilleton in particular), literature, music and socio-political issues. Together, the studies can be read as a narrative of interaction between the two capital cities. The industrial and modern Berlin of the 1920s proves an irresistible magnet for many Viennese, whose letters and journalism time and again reflect on the differences between the cities. The year 1933 marks the political cut-off point, when in many cases exile becomes the predominant theme.

Book His Master s Voice Die Stimme Seines Herrn

Download or read book His Master s Voice Die Stimme Seines Herrn written by Alan Kelly and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1994-05-30 with total page 1406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is one of a series which will cover the output of the Gramophone Company from its beginning in 1898 to 1929, when recording methods had progressed from the primitive trumpet to the sophisticated microphone. The Company operated through ten branches, and the catalogues of two of these (Italy and France) have already been published by Greenwood. This new volume adds Germany to the list, but the coverage extends to Austria, Switzerland, and Czechoslovakia and to any other country (including the United States) where there was interest in records whose source or language was German. The principal intention of this volume is to produce a complete listing of material within this field, and not merely a selection (e.g., operatic records only). Thus, it lists not only the important recordings from Wagner operas, but those from other composers, together with all the songs, popular and serious, recorded by the most important record company of the age. Also included are all the instrumental records of the time--by pianists, violinists, cellists, and harmonica players--as well as military music played by celebrated regimental bands. Included with this is a remarkable amount of material where the executant was also the composer, an area of unusual interest. In previous years, most records from this time period were unavailable, and there was virtually no chance of ever hearing them, particularly where copies were so rare as to exist in only one collection. The introduction of the long-playing record changed the situation and the invention of the compact disc has improved availability to an extent undreamed of even a few years ago. This volume is intended to provide collectors and archivists with a comprehensive and reliable guide to the contents of their collections.

Book ART and the MIND Ernst H GOMBRICH

Download or read book ART and the MIND Ernst H GOMBRICH written by Sybille Moser-Ernst and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernst H. Gombrich, the Art Historian, master of both Continental thought and English language, became one of the world's most well-known representatives of the discipline. Half a century ago his testable theories transformed thinking on how to look at art. After only a few years during which semiotics appeared to render Sir Ernst's common-sense framework outdated, the rise of cognitive approaches has enabled him to recover internationally the status he once had in France as a radical thinker within modern philosophy. This book explores Gombrich's intellectual legacy by analysing some of the concepts and insights in the context of Image Science, the "Steckenpferd". The international contributors are original authorities in their own right, among them some of Gombrich's former students.
