Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a horrible, true story of an unbelievable and unfair indictment and imprisonment of a loyal American whose only crime was to misread the USG export regulations. He spent all his money on an expensive lawyer who said, 2 days before the trial, 'You are going to prison.' Dr. Ernest Kelly replied, 'How can I be imprisoned since I did nothing wrong?' His lawyer answered, 'The prisons are full of people who did nothing wrong ' Terrified, Ernest and his wife caught the next plane to Europe and spent the next 17 years living a new life in Spain until he was arrested and learned what it was like to live in a Spanish prison. Extradited to Los Angeles, on the advice of his lawyer he agreed to a plea bargain and pled guilty since he didn't have enough money for a trial. The judge ignored the advice of the probation officer assigned by the court to evaluate Dr. Kelly's case that he be released with time served and instead sentenced him to 2 years in prison and 2 years' probation.

At 17, he was unaware of demons latching on to him after a friend performed a satanic ritual. In the army, he was a womanizer and a thief. But when a brutal truck accident caused some brain damage, his life took a particularly dark turn. Drugs provided the only relief from the constant pain after the accident. In out and out of jail and in out of rehab, Dr. Portis struggled to find hope and purpose. Then one simple act of kindness changed his life forever. Freed from addiction, he found himself in a church, saved by God for a new purpose. Gritty and real, Saved at Fifty-One is an honest look at one man’s life without and with God. • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Homeward written by Bruce Western and published by Russell Sage Foundation. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of mass incarceration, over 600,000 people are released from federal or state prison each year, with many returning to chaotic living environments rife with violence. In these circumstances, how do former prisoners navigate reentering society? In Homeward, sociologist Bruce Western examines the tumultuous first year after release from prison. Drawing from in-depth interviews with over one hundred individuals, he describes the lives of the formerly incarcerated and demonstrates how poverty, racial inequality, and failures of social support trap many in a cycle of vulnerability despite their efforts to rejoin society. Western and his research team conducted comprehensive interviews with men and women released from the Massachusetts state prison system who returned to neighborhoods around Boston. Western finds that for most, leaving prison is associated with acute material hardship. In the first year after prison, most respondents could not afford their own housing and relied on family support and government programs, with half living in deep poverty. Many struggled with chronic pain, mental illnesses, or addiction—the most important predictor of recidivism. Most respondents were also unemployed. Some older white men found union jobs in the construction industry through their social networks, but many others, particularly those who were black or Latino, were unable to obtain full-time work due to few social connections to good jobs, discrimination, and lack of credentials. Violence was common in their lives, and often preceded their incarceration. In contrast to the stereotype of tough criminals preying upon helpless citizens, Western shows that many former prisoners were themselves subject to lifetimes of violence and abuse and encountered more violence after leaving prison, blurring the line between victims and perpetrators. Western concludes that boosting the social integration of former prisoners is key to both ameliorating deep disadvantage and strengthening public safety. He advocates policies that increase assistance to those in their first year after prison, including guaranteed housing and health care, drug treatment, and transitional employment. By foregrounding the stories of people struggling against the odds to exit the criminal justice system, Homeward shows how overhauling the process of prisoner reentry and rethinking the foundations of justice policy could address the harms of mass incarceration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Live in the Light examines humanity’s misguided values and goals and depicts how personal loss can lead to a crisis of faith that can only be restored through grace. Following a childhood marred by tragedy, Jack Wilson has dedicated his life to the pursuit of becoming a physician—but at a huge personal cost. Jack refuses to trust in others, to a point that he shuns interpersonal relationships in case they might interfere with his goal of practicing medicine. His mindset changes dramatically when he meets Annie Monroe, a nursing student, and falls in love. Try as he might to push aside his growing feelings for Annie, their relationship blossoms and the two get married. However, it’s not long before Jack’s old habits—of prioritizing work over relationships—return. Jack struggles to make time for anything aside from work, and that, on top of wrestling with his faith, damages his marriage. It’s not until Jack Wilson suffers tragedy anew that his life spirals out of control. Then, at the risk of losing his medical practice, he becomes depressed and has a nearly fatal accident. As he “dies,” Jack has an ethereal encounter that restores his faith and renews his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when your entire life and career are constructed around a religious faith that you no longer possess? Do you continue to promote a gospel that you have intellectually and emotionally rejected to maintain your livelihood and the support and respect you receive from your community? Or do you renounce your faith to your congregation and the public at large, putting yourself and your family at risk? From Apostle to Apostate offers a comprehensive introduction to the Clergy Project, established in 2011 to provide a safe space where clergy who have lost their faith can connect with others facing the exact same questions—often alone and in isolation. Charting the origins, growth, and goals of the project, the book draws on the author's own experience as a founding project member and on interviews with its founders. It also reveals the troubles and triumphs experienced by many of its members, whose numbers have grown from just over 50 to more than 500 in a few short years. As the book movingly demonstrates, despite the substantial personal and professional challenges nonbelieving clergy face, for many, a loss of faith has turned out not to be a loss at all—but a gain of newfound community, self-respect, and honesty with themselves and others.
