Book excerpt: In this stunning follow-up to Hollow Kingdom and Seattle Times/Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association bestseller, the animal kingdom's "favorite apocalyptic hero"is back with a renewed sense of hope for humanity, ready to take on a world ravaged by a viral pandemic (Helen Macdonald). Once upon an apocalypse, there lived an obscenely handsome American crow named S.T. . . . When the world last checked-in with its favorite Cheeto addict, the planet had been overrun by flesh-hungry beasts, and nature had started re-claiming her territory from humankind. S.T., the intrepid crow, alongside his bloodhound-bestie Dennis, had set about saving pets that had become trapped in their homes after humanity went the way of the dodo. That is, dear reader, until S.T. stumbled upon something so rare--and so precious--that he vowed to do everything in his power to safeguard what could, quite literally, be humanity's last hope for survival. But in a wild world plagued by prejudiced animals, feather-raising environments, new threats so terrifying they make zombies look like baby bunnies, and a horrendous dearth of cheesy snacks, what's a crow to do? Why, wing it on another big-hearted, death-defying adventure, that's what! Joined by a fabulous new cast of animal characters, S.T. faces many new challenges plus his biggest one yet: parenthood. Book excerpt: As an investigative journalist, Monbiot found a mission in his ecological boredom, that of learning what it might take to impose a greater state of harmony between himself and nature. He was not one to romanticize undisturbed, primal landscapes, but rather in his attempts to satisfy his cravings for a richer, more authentic life, he came stumbled into the world of restoration and rewilding. When these concepts were first introduced in 2011, very recently, they focused on releasing captive animals into the wild. Soon the definition expanded to describe the reintroduction of animal and plant species to habitats from which they had been excised. Some people began using it to mean the rehabilitation not just of particular species, but of entire ecosystems: a restoration of wilderness. Rewilding recognizes that nature consists not just of a collection of species but also of their ever-shifting relationships with each other and with the physical environment. Ecologists have shown how the dynamics within communities are affected by even the seemingly minor changes in species assemblages. Predators and large herbivores have transformed entire landscapes, from the nature of the soil to the flow of rivers, the chemistry of the oceans, and the composition of the atmosphere. The complexity of earth systems is seemingly boundless."

And why does she feel like she's being watched? Increasingly unnerved, Cass is overjoyed at the arrival of the formidable Setari. But when Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, S.T. starts to think something's not quite right. His tried-and-true remedies—from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis—fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LONGLISTED FOR THE WAINWRIGHT PRIZE FOR WRITING ON CONSERVATION Investigating the ethical and practical challenges of one of the greatest threats to biodiversity: invasive species. Across the world, invasive species pose a danger to ecosystems. The UN Convention on Biological Diversity ranks them as a major threat to biodiversity on par with habitat loss, climate change and pollution. Tackling this isn't easy, and no one knows this better than Hugh Warwick, a conservationist who loathes the idea of killing, harming or even eating animals. Yet as an ecologist, he is acutely aware of the need, at times, to kill invasive species whose presence harms the wider environment. Hugh explores the complex history of species control, revealing the global movement of species and the impacts of their presence. Combining scientific theory with gentle humour in his signature style, he explains the issues conservationists face to control non-native animals and protect native species – including grey and red squirrels on Anglesey, ravens and tortoises in the Mojave Desert, cane toads in Australia and the smooth-billed ani on the Galapagos – and describes cases like Pablo Escobar's cocaine hippos and the Burmese python pet trade. Taking a balanced and open approach to this emotive subject, Hugh speaks to experts on all sides of the debate. How do we protect endangered native species? Which species do we prioritise? And how do we reckon with the ethics of killing anything in the name of conservation?

Book Life in Oakhurst

Download or read book Life in Oakhurst written by Lori Howard and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing little snippets about my daily life is nothing more than trying to remain connected to people I care about most. How often do we cruise through life not relishing even the tiniest of successes, learning opportunities and pleasures much less sharing those chosen moments with people that support and even look forward to our next adventure in life. 2002 was the year of loss for my husband and I. Not all of our losses were negative between the two of us we lost over 100 lbs.! Once youve experienced the type of losses we did during this year, you begin to take stock in your values, dreams and priorities. So in an attempt to redefi ne ourselves we sold our fully paid for San Diego based home and moved to a one- bedroom, two-story, beyond-ugly green, get away pad on a ten acre parcel on Deadwood Mountain. (Makes me want to keep an eye out for Outlaw/ Rustlers) A perfectly reasonable diversion for two city folks, with the belief that bears belong in the zoo and lattes should be available on every street corner! Why not uproot the declawed cats, and never consider asking ourselves the question So what is the difference between septic and sewer? What we found, are the experiences that make us smile, question (what were we thinking?) and somehowsome way appreciate our new life through the absurd and benign evolution of every day events. To add to the mayhem, we decided to become innkeepers and pool our resources together to build our own little slice of heaven as we create the perfect Bed and Breakfast. It didnt really matter that I never met a bed I ever wanted to make up or the thought of scrubbing toilets leaving me a little disgruntled. It was the idea of living in paradise and sharing it with great people along the way. So here we are sharing a few snippets of Life in Oakhurst

Book excerpt: LAMBDA LITERARY OCTOBER'S MOST ANTICIPATED LGBTQIA+ LITERATURE THE GLOBE AND MAIL TOP 30 CANADIAN BOOKS TO READ IN 2023 A novel about Berlin: a city for artists and libertines, a perfect place to find love and madness. When he tired of Toronto’s insular scene, art critic Martin Heather fled to Berlin, where he tried to sleep his way through the entire population of gay men. And then he met Alexandar, who began to tutor Martin in increasingly violent sex – and in love. Pervatory is a series of journal entries about Martin and Alexandar’s relationship. But interjections from the present, where Martin has been institutionalized, suggest that the hints we get of his increasing instability and obsession with the idea that his apartment is haunted by an evil spirit may have led to something dire … RM Vaughan was an astute art critic, a dazzling poet, and an important queer activist. His untimely death in October 2020 was a tremendous loss to the queer and literary communities. This novel is what he left for us. "Pervatory is RM Vaughan's perverse Valentine to Berlin. It is sexy, funny, often elegant, and a fitting elegiac punctuation mark to his incredible body of work. Given the way he left us, it is as devastating as it is exhilarating." – journalist and Lambda Award–winning author Matthew Hays "RM Vaughan was a promiscuous pansy, a louche moralist, a lonely heart, but most importantly, he was a writer, an irritating, idiosyncratic, incisive writer. This country, with its mawkish, mediocre literary culture, didn't know what to do with him. Pervatory is his final affront." – Derek McCormack, author of Castle Faggot "Brilliant, funny, propulsive." – Zoe Whittall, author of The Best Kind of People
