Wuska has a special interest in helping the homeless.

Book After Development Dynamics

Download or read book After Development Dynamics written by Anthony P. D'Costa and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Korean economic development trajectory has been widely studied and is well understood. From an impoverished war-torn nation, the country has progressed on all fronts, including a ten-fold increase in per capita income over a 40 year period. It stands out internationally when it comes to education and politically it has moved away from authoritarianism to a more spirited democratic system. In short, it seems to have achieved it all. The question then is, what does a country do after it has attained development? This volume examines Korea's strategic engagement with Asia as a response to the limits of the home market. Access to new markets and resources in Asia through exports and foreign investment are critical. Additionally, with Korea's ongoing demographic crisis, its engagement with foreign workers is also inevitable. After-Development Dynamics explores how Korea is responding through regional integration, strategic industrial upgrading of exports, foreign markets and resources, and coping with migrants, including unskilled workers, students, and professionals. The transfer of Korean business and employment practices through investment to other countries and accommodating foreigners is not trouble-free. Further, prosperity imposes demands for increased social welfare, while the workings of contemporary global capitalism introduce new sources of inequality. Sharing that prosperity with small firms, irregular workers, and women becomes critical. This volume presents the key internal challenges facing Korean society and suggests multiple ways to address them as a related response to Korea's after-development prosperity.

Book Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea

Download or read book Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea written by James E. Hoare and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Korea (Republic of Korea) is the more successful of the two Koreas in both economic and political terms. Even the Asian economic crisis of 1997–1998, which hit badly, was weathered successfully, and when the next crisis came along in 2007, South Korea coped better than many other countries. This economic strength, taken with the steady progress of democratization since 1987, indicates that when the peninsula is eventually reunified, as one day it probably will be, a new unified Korea will follow the South Korea model rather than that of North Korea. This fourth edition of Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Korea contains a chronology, an introduction, appendixes, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 700 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. This book is an excellent resource for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about the Republic of Korea.

Book excerpt: While most analyses of Korean politics have looked to elites to explain political change, this new and revised edition of Korean Society examines the role of ordinary people in this dramatic transformation. Taking the innovative theme of 'civil society' - voluntary organizations outside the role of the state which have participated in the process of political and social democratization - the essays collected here examine Korea as one of the most dramatic cases in the world of ordinary citizens participating in the transformation of politics. Key topics discussed include: comparisons of Korean democratization to the experiences of post-authoritarian regimes elsewhere in the world comparisons of the theory of civil society as developed in Western Europe and America the legacy of Korea's Confucian past for contemporary politics and society close examinations of various civil society movements South Korea and North Korea. Conceptually innovative, up-to-date and timely, the new edition of this book will be an invaluable resource for students of contemporary Korea, Asian politics and the global struggle for democracy.

Book Summary of Heinrich Harrer s Seven Years in Tibet

This book was released on 2022-07-02T22:59:00Z with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had planned to escape from India during the war, but the war suddenly began, and I was taken prisoner. I was then transferred to another camp. With the help of like-minded companions, I collected compasses, money, and maps. #2 We were transferred to another camp in India, and this time we were transported by rail to the biggest POW camp in India. The conditions at the camp changed completely, and we had the Himalayas right in front of us. We thought about escaping over the passes to Tibet. #3 I had originally intended to escape alone, so that I wouldn’t have to consider a companion. But one day, my friend Rolf Magener told me that an Italian general had the same intentions as myself. We quickly joined forces on the basis that I would be responsible for all the planning, and he for the money and equipment. #4 I was often sent out to gather information for the escape plan, and I learned how to climb over the camp’s outer fence and into Marchese’s wing. I cut the wires, and we escaped into the jungle.
