Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memory is the electric skeleton for the visual life. Here are trips into marshes and swamps, forests and stream valleys and the associations triggered from such simple experiences. Whether we go to forget or to remember, these are the traces of one walker's year among insects and birds, through the seasons in the Mississippi and Arkansas River Valleys. Neither biography nor diary, it is at times personal narrative and at times just the moment conveyed as purely as possible. We are sometimes only what we have seen and who we recall in the seeing. It is the joy of going, even for an hour. This is the come-back-and-tell-it part. Among dogs, armadillos, songbirds and children, sometimes it is best just to be humble and stay out of the way. Sometimes you laugh and write it down.

Book Romancing the Gods Collection

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans have been telling one another stories ever since they first developed language. Stories that teach, stories that entertain. The ancient Greek story tellers had a nasty habit of punishing their main characters, especially when it came to romance. I’m bringing these couples into modern times and giving them not only new lives, but also another chance to find the happily ever after they deserve. This collection contains the first four books in the Romancing a God series. Pandora Curiosity killed the cat. It also changed the course of mankind. Pandora Jones roams her city streets at night, collecting the worries that keep others awake and securing them in special boxes that she makes. The ultimate lonely girl, trying to atone for her ancestor’s costly mistake, just like the long line of Pandoras before her. Zeus sends his handsome eldest son to set things right with Pandora but neglects to tell Zee exactly who to look for, what to do, or even why he’s been sent. That would take all the fun out of the game and everyone knows the Olympic gods love their games. Cassandra Engaged to marry Portland’s most eligible bachelor, an up and coming lawyer in the city’s most prestigious law firm, Cassandra Brown can’t believe her good fortune. Her life is perfect except for one teeny, tiny thing–she can see the future, but no one ever listens. Handsome Pauli knows about Cassie’s gift. He knows why no one listens when she tries to warn them. He even knows what needs to be done about it–but can he convince Cassie to give up her perfect dream? Artemis Artemis Smith prefers work over romance. After five years of plotting and planning she lands a coveted project in her beloved Portland, Maine. Unfortunately, her father lines up financing for the project with Jack Orion, a man who plays hard, works hard, and goes through beautiful women like they’re an endless commodity. Artemis has no intention of becoming one of Jack’s conquests, but Orion can’t ignore a challenge–especially when the prize is the intelligent and alluring Artemis Smith. Andromeda Constantly judged by her looks, Andromeda White doesn’t fit in anywhere. She tries her best to fulfill her parents’ expectations but never earns their love, the one thing she most wants. Now they expect her to make the ultimate sacrifice for their business–to marry a man she despises. Andromeda rebels and makes a bid for love and happiness–until she discovers the fates of hundreds lie in her hands. Can she find a way to free herself from her destiny and seize happiness?

Book Human Security

    Book Details:
  • Author : W.E. Blatz
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 1966-12-15
  • ISBN : 1442633816
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Human Security written by W.E. Blatz and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1966-12-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime, W.E. Blatz was so much occupied with the development of the University of Toronto’s Institute of Child Study that he was able to devote little time to writing. This is his first book to appear in twenty-one years, and his first complete exposition of his famous Theory of Security. The Theory of Security is radically different from the theories promulgated by Freudian psychologists. Whereas Freudian personality theory is based on the notion of “unconscious,” an entity that is only indirectly observable, the Theory of Security derives from the observation of the conscious state in all its manifestations. Dr. Blatz thus makes use of both empirical observations and the results of introspection, and, as might be expected, some of his conclusions run counter to those reached in much current psychological discussion. But proof of the forcible influence of the theory and its author may be found in the impressive number of books and articles already published by Dr. Blatz’s associates at the Institute of Child Study, applying the theory to the practical problems of psychological observation and therapy. It is fitting that the man whose work has generated so much fruitful research by others in this field should at last have set down in book form the fundamental principles that guided them.

Book Worshipping False Gods

Download or read book Worshipping False Gods written by Arun Shourie and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2012-07-27 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last couple of decades, B.R. Ambedkar has come to be idolized as no other political leader has. His statue is one of the largest in the Parliament complex. Political parties have reaped rich electoral dividends riding on his name. A decades-old cartoon of him in a textbook rocked Parliament for days recently, causing parties across the political spectrum to run for cover and call for the withdrawal of the 'offending' cartoon. In Worshipping False Gods, Arun Shourie employs his scholarly rigour to cast a critical look at the legend of Ambedkar. With his distinctive eye for detail, Shourie delves into archival records to ask pertinent questions: Did Ambedkar coordinate his opposition to the freedom struggle with the British? How does his approach to social change contrast with that of Mahatma Gandhi's? Did the Constitution spring from him or did it grow as a dynamic living organism? Passionately argued and based on a mountain of facts that it presents, Worshipping False Gods compels us to go behind the myths on which discourse is built in India today.

Book excerpt: Robert Frost was a practicing farmer, a skilled naturalist and one of America's best-loved poets. His body of work provides a vivid and compelling narrative of New England's changing environment--though it can be hard to discern when its parts are scattered through hundreds of different poems, voices and moods. This book pieces together Frost's environmental commentary, examining his poems thematically and in a logical order. In them, homesteads are carved out of the forest, families make their living from an obdurate land, property is abandoned when it fails to sell, and plants and animals reclaim deserted farms. Frost bemoaned the loss of people from the land but also celebrated the flora and fauna that thrived in fallow fields and empty barns.

Book excerpt: This book is an in-depth analysis of three of the most crucial years in twentieth-century Italian history, the years 1943-46. After more than two decades of a Fascist regime and a disastrous war experience during which Italy changed sides, these years saw the laying of the political and cultural foundations for what has since become known as Italy's First Republic. Drawing on texts from the literature, film, journalism, and political debate of the period, Antifascisms offers a thorough survey of the personalities and positions that informed the decisions taken in this crucial phase of modern Italian history.

Book The Companion Guide to Trackards for North American Mammals

Download or read book The Companion Guide to Trackards for North American Mammals written by David Brown and published by McDonald and Woodward Publishing Company. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Companion Guide to Trackards for North American Mammals is part of a field-tested track and scat identification system. The Companion Guide can be used to interpret information on the Trackards, as well as to view additional images of North American mammals that are distributed widely over the continent. It offers comparisons between taxa which aren't included in the Trackards due to lack of space. All images in both The Companion Guide and Trackards have been produced from photographs of actual tracks and scat of live, free-ranging wild animals. The Companion Guide also contains information about track morphology, the similarity of sign of one species to that of other species, and habitat preferences. No images have been copied from other sources, a practice that has perpetuated many inaccuracies in other tracking books and related resources. The Trackards/Companion Guide identification system has been field tested and revised for over a decade, resulting in the best resource on the market for the successful identification of mammal tracks.Tracks and sign for the following animals are included in the system: Black Bear, Beaver, Moose, Snowshoe Hare, River Otter, Fisher, White-tailed Deer, Eastern Coyote, Porcupine, Raccoon, Bobcat, Opossum, Woodchuck, Red Fox, Muskrat, Gray Fox, Mink, Cottontail Rabbit, Striped Skunk, Gray Squirrel, Weasel, Red Squirrel, Chipmunk, Mouse, Vole, and Shrew. The book-card system should appeal to any person interested in natural history, and will be especially attractive to backpackers and winter sports enthusiasts who wonder what animal made the trails they encounter in the snow. Schools at any level may adapt the system for instruction in environmental science classes. Higher educational students may purchase the whole system while teachers of lower grades may purchase sets of the Trackards for their classes while using The Companion Guide as a teacher's reference. The Companion Guide to Trackards for North American Mammals are 5.5 x 8.5 inches and can easily be packed in a large pocket for ease in transportation and usability.
