Book Snow Loads and Strength of Small Roofs in Canada

Download or read book Snow Loads and Strength of Small Roofs in Canada written by A. T. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional joist-and-rafter roof frames built before the introduction of the 1962-63 Housing Standards have extremely variable load-carrying capacities. Some of these frames failed under a load as low as 18 p.s.f. under short-term loading while others carried over 100 p.s.f. Although this has apparently led to few roof failures due to snow load, this situation is obviously unsatisfactory. Improved nailing schedules were therefore introduced in the Housing Standards which take into account variations in span, slope, and snow load. In addition, improvements in the requirements for conventional roof frames were made in the Housing Standards to eliminate weaknesses that might result when the rafters develop a high thrust. On the basis of tests on a wide range of conventional roof frames and the generally satisfactory experience with these roofs in the field, criteria for acceptable performance were formulated for trusses. A number of standard designs were developed for trusses with spans varying from 24 to 32 feet and slopes varying from 3/12 to 5/12 that would meet the performance criteria for snow loads varying from 30 to 50 p.s.f. (Author).

Book Loading Tests on Full scale House Roofs

Download or read book Loading Tests on Full scale House Roofs written by National Research Council Canada. Division of Building Research and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earlier loading tests on single roof frames had shown that many conventional rafter-and-joist frames had failure loads well below the design snow loads specified in Canada. This suggested that either actual snow loads were lower than the design values or that the strength of individual roof frames do not indicate full strength of the complete roof. Consequently, a number of full-scale house roofs were load tested to failure in the laboratory to determine what additional strength is derived from the roof sheathing providing the roof with 'folded plate action.' The results indicate that on the whole most roofs do not derive much extra strength from the sheathing. (Author).

Book Snow Loads on Roofs

  • Pages : 4 pages

Download or read book Snow Loads on Roofs written by B. Peter and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Snow loads on roofs vary widely according to geographical location (climate), site exposure, and shape of the roof. In considering snow loads on roofs, Canada can be divided into four major regions. Structural designers are well aware of the influence of snow loads on the design of buildings as in many cases they constitute the largest design load for the roof system. A careful assessment of the snow load is required, therefore, to avoid both unnecessary construction costs and undue risk of failure. (Author).

Download or read book Snow Load Safety Guide written by U. s. Department of Homeland Security and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the Risk Management Series Snow Load Safety Guide is to inform building stakeholders about the risks a snow event poses to their buildings, provide them with information about preventative measures to take before the snow season, and inform them of actions that should be taken before, during, and after a snow event. Most buildings are not at risk of snow induced failure. More often than not, attempting to remove snow from a roof is more hazardous than beneficial, posing a risk to both personnel and the roofing structure. However, snow accumulation in excess of building design conditions can result in more than a temporary loss of electrical power and inaccessible roads. Buildings may be vulnerable to structural failure and possible collapse if basic preventative steps are not taken in advance of a snow event. Knowledge of the building roof framing system and proper preparation in advance of a snow event is instrumental in reducing risk to the structure. Structural failure due to roof snow loads may be linked to several possible causes, including but not limited to the following: Actual snow load significantly exceeds design snow load; Drifting and sliding snow conditions; Deficient workmanship; Insufficient operation and maintenance; Improper design; Inadequate drainage design; Insufficient design; in older buildings, insufficient design is often related to inadequate snow load design criteria in the building code in effect when the building was designed. This document is not intended to provide a comprehensive discussion of the underlying issues or forensics of snow-induced structural failure. The purpose is instead to: Inform building stakeholders of susceptible snow loading conditions; Identify potentially vulnerable roof framing systems; Outline a general methodology to monitor buildings for signs of potential failure so that steps can be taken to reduce the potential risk of snow-load-induced structural failure. Book Analysis of Roof Snow Load Case Studies

Download or read book Analysis of Roof Snow Load Case Studies written by Michael O'Rourke and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roof snow load case studies gathered throughout the United States over a three-year period are analyzed. The objective of the analysis is to determine a relationship between the snow load on the ground and the corresponding uniform snow load on flat and sloped roofs. The main parameters considered are the thermal characteristics of the roof, the roof slope and the exposure of the structure. Exposure has the strongest effect on the ratio of ground to roof snow loads. Comparisons are made with existing and proposed building codes and standards. (Author).
