Book excerpt: Call Me When You're Dead is a darkly comic novel about payback gone wild, gone sour, maybe even sweet. “If anything bad happens to me, I want you to get him.” That's what Eleanor Birch’s glamorous friend Sasha Cole requests of her during a New York City dinner one hot August night. Something bad does happen, and Eleanor is forced to become another person altogether in the wilds of Manhattan, acting as her own little Pygmalion in the harsh world of advertising and its remorseless denizens. How she triumphs, and how her prey becomes first her ally and then her lover, makes her journey a tragic romp, a hilarious disaster, and even an all-out farce—but one with very serious consequences.

Download or read book Angel Flight of 82 written by Dean Doudna and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-06-08 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true story took place in 1982. At the time, Dean was a W1 and stationed in Korea. He had only been graduated from the army's flight program ten months and did not yet possess the flight experience befitting the multiple flight decisions required of this flight. Not only did Dean need to deal with the flight environment but had to come to terms with the unfortunate decision matrix that he used to fly in the first place. Dean quickly realized that he had first to understand his flight conditions before he could modify emergency procedures designed to save his life. To his horror, Dean had never come to grips with the plane crash that killed his father, twin, and two additional passengers fourteen years earlier. That traumatic event was haunting him this day while dealing with the environmental conditions that were trying to kill them all on this flight. The two flights' parallel is uncanny. There is enough background provided to allow the reader a glimpse into the unique and sometimes disastrous Doudna early years. The author does his best to remind the readers that God is the real hero. At every turn, the Holy Spirit whispers solutions, guiding Dean with decisions decades ahead of his ten-month flight experience. There are plenty of human-interest stories scattered throughout the novel to give the reader a rest bit from the life-threatening drama that plays out in the cockpit. Dean continued his career where he served thirty-five years active duty in the army. Upon retirement from the army as a CW5, was selected to be the Government Flight Representative, where he served for another eleven years risk mitigating and approving the maintenance procedures and flights for all of Fort Rucker's 650 helicopters. He retired in 2015 and felt compelled to tell this story.

As Angel chases love on the campus of Dartmouth, he finds that the most astounding movement of the sixties was not civil rights or antiwar clamor, but instead, it is the liberation of women. While attempting to merge his passions into a single orb, Angelwho has somehow become a cross between an accidental playboy and literary nerdsometimes succeeds gloriously. Other times, not so much. As he moves from bedroom to classroom and classroom to bedroom, Angel smokes weed with the hope of gaining clarity. But as time goes on, Angel cannot help but wonder if he will ever be able to view the world from a womans perspective or whether he will go down in flames as a fortuitous playboy who never determined the difference between lust and love. Angel blends sex, drugs, comedy, and literary influences into a wild brew as a Dartmouth student embarks on a journey of self-discovery during 1970s America.
