Book Snippets of Truths

Download or read book Snippets of Truths written by Mary Hardy and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories are the backbone of life. In Snippets of Truths, author Mary Hardy shares the stories of her youth while growing up in rural southern Mississippi in the fifties and sixties. A collection of anecdotes and vignettes, this memoir narrates the memorable experiences of Hardy's childhood. From the large to the small, and from the ordinary and everyday to the remarkable, Snippets of Truths recalls a wide array of events-living on a farm, working in the fields, attending school, participating as a majorette, becoming homecoming queen, making homemade ice cream, and creating dolls out of Coca Cola bottles. Providing a glimpse into life in the South, Snippets of Truths communicates the nostalgia that resides within each and every one of us. I remember the day when the world was told that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated as if it was yesterday. Everything and everyone came to a sudden and silent halt. It was as if the world had ended. I was sitting at my desk in a Mississippi history class with twenty-five other students. Our teacher was standing near the chalkboard, sharing historical information with the class. If we were talking at all, we stopped. After a while, we continued our class discussion, but with focus on the president.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE INTRODUCTION: Snippets are fragments of things. They are people observed, foods consumed, ornaments spotted: a man on a streetcar, crawfish shells on the sidewalk, an ornate cornstalk-shaped fence. I believe that to immerse oneself in a place means to try and hold all its elements, past and present, grandiose and mundane, in a single plane of vision. This is, of course, impossible. The result is fragments, vignettes. In Jackson Square, for example: a vision of the first French settlers coming up the Mississippi alongside the sight of a garishly painted street performer harassing passers-by. If we cannot hold all facets of a place in our mind at once, I think the next best thing is to honor our fragmented understanding, to see in "Snippets." I learned and re-learned a lot of things making this book. I learned that even in my "home" in Louisiana I feel I am an outsider peering into a window. I re-learned how beautiful and bizarre New Orleans is, how every street has a distinct personality. . . . I re-learned that I know very little about anything, and that the more I learn the more I realize how little I know. I learned that asking for entry into people's personal lives is complicated and requires a lot of mental and ethical somersaults. This book is my most earnest and honest reflection of New Orleans: triumphant and tragic, gaudy and gritty, elegant and ugly, rich and poor, a city that embodies all these and other polar opposites with a perverse kind of grace. My account is flawed and incomplete in the way all our experiences are flawed and incomplete: there are always vistas left to see, flavors left to try, stories left to hear; there are assumptions made, words misunderstood, histories distorted. May this book communicate the New Orleans I know, and may you weave your own New Orleans truth between the pages. - Emma Fick

Book excerpt: You don’t have to keep suffering, living in defeat and darkness because you are unequipped with the truth needed to eliminate all the lies, deception, and fear you’re experiencing due to the unexpected events in life, unwanted situations, and times when your circumstances seem to be spiraling rapidly out of your control. Don’t do it. Don’t believe there is no way out. You can escape. You will escape. Believe it. The trials we face are the perfect opportunity to receive lies, be deceived, and remain in a permanent state of fear. Unequipped with the truth we are quickly disconnected from who we really are and all we are capable of. The consequences of believing lies to be the truth, allowing ourselves to be deceived, and accepting fear to be our reality always lead to personal defeat. Finding freedom is possible. The lies will convince you otherwise, deception will have you believing there’s no way out, and fear will keep you permanently trapped. Don’t believe it. Don’t accept lies, deception, and fear to be your truth. Let God’s truth be your truth. Get ready to break free from everything that has ever held you back. Finding Freedom is your way out.

Book Summoning Knowledge in Plato s Republic

Download or read book Summoning Knowledge in Plato s Republic written by Nicholas D. Smith and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicholas D. Smith presents an original interpretation of the Republic, considering it to be a book about knowledge and education. Over the course of Summoning Knowledge in Plato's Republic, he argues for four main theses. Firstly, the Republic is not just a work that has a lot to say about education; it is a book that depicts Socrates as attempting to engage his interlocutors in such a way as to help to educate them and also engages us, the readers, in a way that helps to educate us. Secondly, Plato does not suppose that education, properly understood, should have as its primary aim putting knowledge into souls that do not already have it. Instead, the education Plato discusses, represents occurring between Socrates and his interlocutors, and hopes to achieve in his readers is one that aims to arouse the power of knowledge in us and then to begin to train that power always to engage with what is more real, rather than what is less real. Thirdly, Plato's conception of knowledge is not the one typically presented in contemporary epistemology. It is, rather, the power of conceptualization by the use of exemplars. And finally, Plato engages this power of knowledge in the Republic in a way he represents as only a kind of second-best way to engage knowledge - and not as the best way, which would be dialectic. Instead, Plato uses images that summon the power of knowledge to begin the process by which the power may become fully realized.

Book Snippets of Truth Understanding and Wisdom for a New Way of Living on This Planet

Download or read book Snippets of Truth Understanding and Wisdom for a New Way of Living on This Planet written by Riet Taal (EdD) and published by BalboaPress. This book was released on 2012-11-27 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way of living Do we need to change our way of living on this planet? According to this book, a definite Yes! Our attitudes, priorities, and the way we have looked after the environment have resulted in a situation that is no longer sustainable for a healthy and harmonious future for us and for generations to come. We have seen increased pollution of the air and water; diminishing forests, ice caps, and ozone layers; warming of the planet, resulting in weather and climate changes, and with that danger of extinction for many bird and animal species. And lets not forget: danger for the survival of us human beings! Can we still do something about it, or is it all too little and too late? What is our fate? The message in this book can be considered a wake-up call, an urgent reminder to mend our ways, to change our attitudes, and to have a critical look at what is happening around us; what our roles are and what we as individuals and members of groups and communities can do to bring about change. We are not alone in this endeavourthe messages giving us support and encouragement are coming from a spirit source, channeled by the author through automatic writing. The special readings deal with topics such as: where we come from, what our purpose is, predictions and climate changes, together with information on relationships and finding inner peace and spiritual growth. Let us all strive for a happy and rewarding outcome!

Book Cross cultural Deception in Polish and American English in Computer Mediated Communication

Download or read book Cross cultural Deception in Polish and American English in Computer Mediated Communication written by Anna Kuzio and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-30 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deception is omnipresent throughout the evolution of life, inseparable from the development of various modes of communication. By effectively manipulating the behavior of others, apparently by taking advantage of recipients’ own rules, communicators are able to gain an advantage while negotiating meaning in a cross-cultural environment. Even though much research related to deceptive behavior and its detection has been conducted in recent years, little of it has concentrated on deception outside of a North American context. This monograph addresses that lacuna. Consistently, most research on deception has examined face-to-face verbal communication and ignored computer-mediated communication. In response, this book also provides detailed insights into how computer-mediated communication and adopted cultural values affect deceptive communication and deception detection across cultures, namely in Poland and the USA. It focuses on discussing theories about why cues to deception exist, theories specific to verbal cues to deception, and theories about computer mediation in communication. The book also proposes a research model postulating relationships between computer-mediated communication media, cue detection, media familiarity, national culture, espoused cultural values, veracity judgment success, and deceptive communicative behavior.

Until he showed up and saved me. THREE DAYS Since I threw a drink at the man my father expected me to marry, then found myself slammed against a wall with Penn Everett's seductive voice whispering a proposal I couldn't refuse. THREE HOURS To fall into hate with the man who reminded me of so many things and hid so much behind his lies. He couldn't be the man who saved me three years ago...but there's something so familiar... THREE MINUTES For our relationship to switch from no-strings to marriage. He announced it to my father―he's ecstatic. He told my friends―they're shocked. But he didn't ask me, he commanded me―and I'm livid. THREE SECONDS For his lies to slowly steal my heart and make me believe, hope...trust. THREE BREATHS For his truth to destroy me. THRONE OF TRUTH TWO YEARS Since my life changed for the second time and not necessarily for the better. Two years since I traded prison bars for streets and hunted a runaway who I'd met in an alley. TWO DAYS Since I forgot how to lie, woke to fists, and chased after the girl who'd been stolen from me. TWO HOURS To save her, rescue her, keep my lies intact. She looks at me full of hate. I look at her full of confession. TWO MINUTES For our relationship to switch from mutual dislike to floundering with unknowns. I've hurt her. Now, she's hurt me. I guess we're even. TWO SECONDS For her to listen, to see, to finally know who I am. The answer comes with hardship. The answer isn't what she wants to hear. TWO BREATHS For me to walk out the door. TWO HEARTBEATS For it all to be over.

Book excerpt: The human mind is the pinnacle of creation. It is spiritual and emanates from the human brain, initially at any rate! It is sociable and abstract and has an enormous coefficient of expansion. It can love. It can think. It can believe. It is the faculty that sets us apart from all other levels of being on the planet. It inhabits a dying world which has flickers of life like fireworks which sooner or later disappear like Chinese lanterns in the sky. We disappear too but our minds live on, hankering to be reunited with our "old flames" our bodies. Then the orchestra rises in crescendo as our minds and bodies reunite "for better or for worse", and ride into the sunset. Great stuff! Read all about it. The mind and body inseparable in life, and separated at death, reappear in "This is Your Life - Last Epic Episode." What will it be? A comedy, a tragedy or a thriller? It is all up to free will and belief. The believing mind is all powerful, provided it engages rationality honestly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On fire for God--a sweeping history of puritanism in England and America Begun in the mid-sixteenth century by Protestant nonconformists keen to reform England's church and society while saving their own souls, the puritan movement was a major catalyst in the great cultural changes that transformed the early modern world. Providing a uniquely broad transatlantic perspective, this groundbreaking volume traces puritanism's tumultuous history from its initial attempts to reshape the Church of England to its establishment of godly republics in both England and America and its demise at the end of the seventeenth century. Shedding new light on puritans whose impact was far-reaching as well as on those who left only limited traces behind them, Michael Winship delineates puritanism's triumphs and tribulations and shows how the puritan project of creating reformed churches working closely with intolerant godly governments evolved and broke down over time in response to changing geographical, political, and religious exigencies.
