Book excerpt: What is snark? You recognize it when you see it -- a tone of teasing, snide, undermining abuse, nasty and knowing, that is spreading like pinkeye through the media and threatening to take over how Americans converse with each other and what they can count on as true. Snark attempts to steal someone's mojo, erase her cool, annihilate her effectiveness. In this sharp and witty polemic, New Yorker critic and bestselling author David Denby takes on the snarkers, naming the nine principles of snark -- the standard techniques its practitioners use to poison their arrows. Snarkers like to think they are deploying wit, but mostly they are exposing the seethe and snarl of an unhappy country, releasing bad feeling but little laughter. In this highly entertaining essay, Denby traces the history of snark through the ages, starting with its invention as personal insult in the drinking clubs of ancient Athens, tracking its development all the way to the age of the Internet, where it has become the sole purpose and style of many media, political, and celebrity Web sites. Snark releases the anguish of the dispossessed, envious, and frightened; it flows when a dying class of the powerful struggles to keep the barbarians outside the gates, or, alternately, when those outsiders want to take over the halls of the powerful and expel the office-holders. Snark was behind the London-based magazine Private Eye, launched amid the dying embers of the British empire in 1961; it was also central to the career-hungry, New York-based magazine Spy. It has flourished over the years in the works of everyone from the startling Roman poet Juvenal to Alexander Pope to Tom Wolfe to a million commenters snarling at other people behind handles. Thanks to the grand dame of snark, it has a prominent place twice a week on the opinion page of the New York Times. Denby has fun snarking the snarkers, expelling the bums and promoting the true wits, but he is also making a serious point: the Internet has put snark on steroids. In politics, snark means the lowest, most insinuating and insulting side can win. For the young, a savage piece of gossip could ruin a reputation and possibly a future career. And for all of us, snark just sucks the humor out of life. Denby defends the right of any of us to be cruel, but shows us how the real pros pull it off. Snark, he says, is for the amateurs.

Book Annotated Hunting of the Snark

Download or read book Annotated Hunting of the Snark written by Martin Gardner and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2006-09-26 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Published on April Fool's Day, 1876, Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark remains one of the most amusing and bizarre works of modern verse. Carroll, who completed this classic poem eleven years after the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, invites readers along on a fictitious hunt to determine who - or what - the Snark actually is." "Now, over 130 years later, Martin Gardner, the extraordinary "philosophical scrivener," returns to the Snark with a trove of new annotations and illustrations, offering readers fresh insights into Carroll's existential play of fancy and philosophy." "Henry Holiday's original drawings enhance the work, as does a new introduction by Adam Gopnik that communicates the relevance this strange and in many ways ominous poem holds for a new generation of readers."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: In the follow-up to Cronus, an American spy travels to London to locate a high-profile missing person, and is faced with terror from the past If they’re going to take you, let them take you with your eyes open. That’s the credo of Clifford Driscoll, the American spy at the center of Snark, the follow-up to William DeAndrea’s Edgar Award–winning Cronus. Driscoll has gone by many names in his short, eventful life, and he’s just borrowed another: that of Jeffrey Bellman, an agent his Russian enemies at Cronus consider dead. As the son of a formidable secret intelligence director, Driscoll/Bellman is used to all kinds of existential ducking and weaving. The new Bellman is sent to England to find Sir Lewis Alfot, a missing former British intelligence chief. He hasn’t even left the London airport, though, before assassins target him. They come courtesy of Leo Calvin, a terrorist Bellman’s dealt with in the past—and Calvin has just kidnapped Alfot as bait. Can Bellman stop Calvin in his tracks, and is Alfot, for his part, as respectable and law-abiding as he seems?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IT began in the swimming pool at Glen Ellen. Between swims it was our wont to come out and lie in the sand and let our skins breathe the warm air and soak in the sunshine. Roscoe was a yachtsman. I had followed the sea a bit. It was inevitable that we should talk about boats. We talked about small boats, and the seaworthiness of small boats. We instanced Captain Slocum and his three years’ voyage around the world in the Spray. We asserted that we were not afraid to go around the world in a small boat, say forty feet long. We asserted furthermore that we would like to do it. We asserted finally that there was nothing in this world we’d like better than a chance to do it. “Let us do it,” we said . . . in fun. Then I asked Charmian privily if she’d really care to do it, and she said that it was too good to be true. The next time we breathed our skins in the sand by the swimming pool I said to Roscoe, “Let us do it.” I was in earnest, and so was he, for he said: “When shall we start?”

This lively collection provides hours of entertainment—better than an Etch A Sketch, and more fun than Silly Putty! Book Lewis Carroll s The Hunting of the Snark

Download or read book Lewis Carroll s The Hunting of the Snark written by Lewis Carroll and published by I. E. Clark Publications. This book was released on 1987 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If-and the thing is wildly possible-the charge of writing nonsense were ever brought against the author of this brief but instructive poem, it would be based, I feel convinced, on the line (in p. 18) "Then the bowsprit got mixed with the rudder sometimes." In view of this painful possibility, I will not (as I might) appeal indignantly to my other writings as a proof that I am incapable of such a deed: I will not (as I might) point to the strong moral purpose of this poem itself, to the arithmetical principles so cautiously inculcated in it, or to its noble teachings in Natural History-I will take the more prosaic course of simply explaining how it happened. The Bellman, who was almost morbidly sensitive about appearances, used to have the bowsprit unshipped once or twice a week to be revarnished, and it more than once happened, when the time came for replacing it, that no one on board could remember which end of the ship it belonged to. They knew it was not of the slightest use to appeal to the Bellman about it-he would only refer to his Naval Code, and read out in pathetic tones Admiralty Instructions which none of them had ever xbeen able to understand-so it generally ended in its being fastened on, anyhow, across the rudder. The helmsman1 used to stand by with tears in his eyes: he knew it was all wrong, but alas! Rule 42 of the Code, "No one shall speak to the Man at the Helm," had been completed by the Bellman himself with the words "and the Man at the Helm shall speak to no one." So remonstrance was impossible, and no steering could be done till the next varnishing day. During these bewildering intervals the ship usually sailed backwards. Contents: FIT I - The Landing, FIT II - The Bellman's Speech, FIT III - The Baker's Tale, FIT IV - The Hunting, FIT V - The Beaver's Lesson, FIT VI - The Barrister's Dream, FIT VII - The Banker's Fate, FIT VIII - The Vanishing

Book excerpt: Heart-pounding and laugh-out-loud funny, the Kilty series from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Amy Vansant introduces you to Broch and Catriona—the urban fantasy couple you can't forget. Catriona's been "fixer" for Parasol Pictures for longer than she cares to remember. Saving drug-addled actors and shady producers from themselves is a grind, so when she finds a half-naked man in a kilt passed out on their Hollywood lot, it's just Tuesday for her. This guy, though... Against her better judgment, she wheels his unconscious carcass to her apartment to let him sleep it off and keep from losing his budding acting career. Plus, the studio doesn't like it when she sends half-unconscious people off in Ubers. The Uber drivers like it even less. But this guy is a disaster. A gorgeous disaster, but one hundred percent trainwreck. When he wakes up, things only get weirder. First, his name's Brochan. Broken? What twisted parents name their kid broken? Catriona wants to write off the ridiculously sexy, self-proclaimed Highlander as a con artist, but her adopted father seems strangely comfortable with the man claiming to have no memory of his past or knowledge of the modern world. And ol' Kilty doesn't seem to care or remember where the stab wound in his side came from. No, he's headed for her shower—again—like he's never had one, obsessed with her shampoos, devoid of all modesty...and dammit...he's charming as hell. Who is this guy? A red-bearded thug, an old picture, and a three-hundred-year-old vendetta soon have Catriona worried she could lose everything—including the mysterious time-traveling Scotsman who makes her crazy in more ways than one. A Highlander followed her home...Can she keep him? -----------------WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT KILTY--------------- "Kilty As Charged has everything you could want: a very strong lead woman (Catriona); fast-paced storyline; lots of action; some huge Scotsmen; great dialogue and plenty of humor; a great cast of supporting characters; and even some time travel! A hilarious story told in a very interesting way. Throw in some mystery and intrigue and you've got yourself a great read....Amy Vansant has written a highly imaginative, mystery/love/humor-filled novel that leaves you wanting to read the next in the series ASAP!!!" ~ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ MMG "Finished reading Kilty as Charged yesterday and loved it! Amy's combination of humor, action, just enough romance, and humor really hit me perfectly --- and made me laugh out loud. Repeatedly. Added to which, she wrote a charming, hilarious male main character. I very much enjoyed her writing style and sense of how to employ the deft lampoon. It is now imperative that I read the other books in the series." --- ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Marcus Cootsona, Author of the Severin Force Political Thrillers "An amazing book by Vansant. A perfect love story, with romance, twists, surprises--- I actually really did laugh out loud in more than 4 places. I love Vansant's quirky sense of humor, her sarcasm is perfect, and how did she even come up with a time-traveling idea, it is too amazing! I read this at work on my break in two sittings." ~ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Aisha K.S. Hashmi, NRCPT "Fun all the way through!!! Great characters, very well developed and interesting. Had me laughing from the first scene. The female lead was quirky and relatable. I found her perspective, job, and skill set out of the norm which I think is part of this author’s genius. You never quite know what may happen next. I love how she keeps surprising herself with her inner dialog! It is hilarious! Highly recommend !!" ~ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lin
