Book Invasive Animals and Plants in Massachusetts Lakes and Rivers

Download or read book Invasive Animals and Plants in Massachusetts Lakes and Rivers written by Wai Hing Wong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing demand for appropriate management of aquatic invasive species in lakes and rivers worldwide. This book covers biology, invasion ecology, sightings, and control techniques of 4 invasive animals and 15 invasive plants in Massachusetts lakes and rivers. It provides valuable information on their biological characteristics and potential expansion pathways, as well as monitoring and management, including alternative management tools using updated biological, chemical, and mechanical methods. The book also includes the regulation of invasive species management to allow resource managers, biologists, practitioners, volunteers, and students a better understanding of compliance and enforcement with environmental law. An example of successful management is highlighted for each invasive species. Invasive Animals and Plants in Massachusetts Lakes and Rivers is the first book to provide comprehensive and systematic coverage and illustrations for both freshwater invasive animals and plants. Although focussing on Massachusetts, it will provide readers with the bigger picture on multiple invasive species, from prevention, early detection, control, ecological restoration, to public education. Natural resource managers in Massachusetts and surrounding states will glean the detailed and valuable information they need to learn and use to prevent and manage freshwater invasive species in the field.

Book Invasive Species in a Globalized World

Download or read book Invasive Species in a Globalized World written by Reuben P. Keller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global trade and the spread of human populations have increasingly moved thousands of native animal and plant species across the natural barriers that have kept them ecologically separated for millions of years. Because some of them thrive in their new regions and harm the environment, the economy, and human health, the prevention and management of such invasive species has become a major local, national, and international policy initiative. Yet even though ecologists have been studying the negative (and sometimes positive) environmental impacts of invasive species and trying to curb their proliferation, and even though their work has in some cases stimulated public conversation and policy, politicians have generally ignored their recommendations. As a result, ecologists have achieved limited success in slowing the spread of invasives. They ve been realizing that in order to fully characterize the impacts of these species, they need to engage with other relevant disciplines across the social and legal sciences as well as the humanities. Drawing together a wide variety of ecologists, historians, economists, legal scholars, policymakers, and communication scholars, Invasive Species in a Globalized World aims to facilitate a dialogue among these various disciplines in order to fully understand invasives and stop their spread. Addressing the numerous challenges associated with reducing invasive impacts, the contributors provide direct policy recommendations, strategies for communicating the risks of invasive species, and insight into how public discourse drives our response to these risks."

Book The Qaakil

Download or read book The Qaakil written by Bill Nielsen and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-14 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Powerful Love + Tragic Terror = Spine-tingling Excitement! Colt and Molly, intensely in love, face devastating horror with grace and humor while fighting to contain a truly horrendous invasive species. The Qaakil is a very timely novel-sized work that mixes humor and romance with the stark terror of a believable monster story. This novel is timely because of the headlines that have been reporting the discovery of Killer fish imported from China in a Maryland pond and now in the Potomac River along with big-headed carp that have decimated fisheries in the Mississippi River system and now threaten the Great Lakes. Great care has also been taken to keep the story line technically correct and logical. This is NOT a giant alligator in my basement type of story! Ecocidae Gigas Dentire or Giant Toothed Pike were thought to be extinct although Inuit people have tried for years to tell the Kabloona (White Man) about what they call The Qaakil; sixteen-foot monsters found in some remote lakes of the far north. Those stories were dismissed as folklore. However, they do exist as John Stanton of Stanton Electronics found out in the last few seconds of his life while on an expedition to the far north. The Stanton family takes a brave and principled stance when they realize they are responsible for importing these monsters and allowing them to escape into a New York State river. Colt and Molly will experience horrifying situations including attempted murder as they work to confine these monsters while at the same time discovering the joys of new-found love.

Book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species

Download or read book A Handbook of Global Freshwater Invasive Species written by Robert A. Francis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-12 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.
