Book excerpt: From church barn to apple orchard, from snow-covered pasture to secret moonshine cabin, Manning’s Snakedoctor reinvigorates the Kentucky pastoral through poems that find light in shadow, good in evil, love in a father’s stinging blow. Maurice Manning returns to the Kentucky countryside in his eighth collection, Snakedoctor. Existing between haunting memory and pastoral dreamscape, this quiet collection showcases Manning’s storytelling at its finest. Simple, four-beat lines hold epiphanies—“the barn is just an empty church”— and announce visits from seven-foot strangers named Mr. True. Here, God is reimagined as a “serious banjo player” who calls the world to sing. And sing Manning does. Through rhyme, blues, and haiku, Snakedoctor trains our ears to hear music in the mundane, to find beauty all around us: in the annotated margins of a well-read book, the flight of a father’s shadow puppet, the yellow centers of daisies. Punctuated by rain’s pitter-patter on a tin wash tub, and the “ring of lonely” in a farmer’s voice as he calls his cattle home, Snakedoctor is a collection that will leave you wanting to dog-ear its pages. From childhood to fatherhood, church barn to apple orchard, moonshine to moonbeam, we leave these poems understanding Manning’s wish: “I wanted to make a prayer and I did, / in half-sleep after the dream.”

Their accents varyan East Coast American professor in Driving, Oxbridge is British with a tinge of Irish in Hippo Club, Mose Konen, and The Man in the Apple-Green Tie. And for the narrator of Ostraneni, the reader may imagine the dialect of a member of the elite of ancient fifth century BC Athens. Four of these monologues are in a female voice: the elderly womans aggressive/defensive voice of Gazelle came to me in a dream shortly after I had moved to New York City to live in the early 1980s, the naive voice of a Midwestern girl recounts a childhood trauma in Snakedoctors, a subdued young woman tells of her relationship to her parents in At the Lake House, and Bronze Age Greek accents of Ismenethe lonely, hysteric, forgotten princess of Thebes and sister to Antigonein the eponymous tragedy by Sophocles, again, invite imagination. That is how I hear them.

Book The Negro Traditions

Download or read book The Negro Traditions written by Thomas Washington Talley and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of previously unpublished tales is a major contribution to the annals of African-American folk narrative. Ranging from fables to historical narratives, these tales contain a rich variety of information on folk customs, speech, and songs, providing the reader with a deeper understanding of and appreciation for nineteenth-century African-American culture. Negro Traditions offers wonderful descriptions of all manner of rural African-American folk customs, including valuable insights into post-Civil War life in rural Middle Tennessee - from riddles to dances - and how former slaves and their children felt about their lives. At times the movement of these tales toward tragedy is reminiscent of Faulkner; their humor suggests Sut Lovingood; their occasional dark surrealism has overtones of Cormac McCarthy. But the overriding reality of these tales as a representation of a people and their culture gives them a power that moves the reader beyond fiction and into factuality. Here are no banjo-plunking renditions of "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah"; these tales are full of the realities of life: violence, work, the power of the supernatural, family life, racial tension, and an intense burning resentment against slavery.
