Book The Journey of the Snail

Download or read book The Journey of the Snail written by Virginia Thayer and published by . This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One summer day the snail is fed up. He's tired of carrying his house around on his back. After the eggs are laid, the babies hatch out by themselves and leave. He decides to travel, see how other snails live. He finds snails living all over the world. They live in the jungle, the tundra, near salt water and fresh, in city gardens and wilderness preserves. He has only one worry. He's seen a famous chef working in the kitchen and he was cooking snails. He continues on his travels. When he stops to rest under a tree, he spots an eagle on a branch high above him. He watches the eagle as it circles, soars and plummets. He thinks that must be the ideal life. Besides, nobody wants to eat an eagle. He decides to pay him a visit, maybe take flying lessons. It takes a long tine to reach the eagle's nest. As he travels along, he tries to develop wings by rubbing his foot against the plants he passes, but nothing comes of it. When he finds the eagle's aerie, he is surprised to find the nest a hodgepodge of sticks jutting out at all angles. He thinks his shell is a much better house. It's very tidy, with a beautiful spiral on either side. He peeks inside the nest and sees nothing but a confusion of fuzz and feathers. Then he notices that the eagle spends every minute hunting and fishing to satisfy the squawking eaglets. Not for him. He was heading home. He had explored a great idea, but now he'd return to his own garden. It would take a long time, but once he got there, he'd have more ideas-and he'd be safe.

Book excerpt: A long, long time ago, before email and texting, the mail was delivered in a much slower way-it was called Snail Mail (because some thought it was delivered by a snail). Although it took much longer, everyone agreed that letters were a little more special when they were delivered by Snail Mail. They might be handwritten. They might include a drawing. They might even contain a surprise inside! One such letter was sent by a Girl to the Boy she loved, and it was up to four special snails to deliver her card across the country. The snails trek across the country-through desert heat and dangerous blizzards, across mountains and plains, through cities and forests-and along the way, they find that taking time to slow down and look around makes the journey all the more beautiful. Snail Mail's playful and educational story encourages kids to have slow living, and to approach life with determination and wonder. Julia Patton's rich illustrations showcase America's diverse terrain and national monuments from coast to coast. Kids and parents alike will delight in this celebration of America's beauty and the power of a simple handwritten letter.

Book Between a Shadow and the Moon

Download or read book Between a Shadow and the Moon written by Susan Mary Stokholm and published by Author House. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of my story invites the reader to search for a mystical place that is far away from the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives: a place where we can tune into another dimension, and see the natural world from ground-level: in this case through the eyes of a snail. It is a humerous story with an underlying philosophical seriousness: a search for answers for some of the deepest questions we can ask. Our snail is called Alfred for some unaccountable reason. He wants to know why? He comes to the conclusion that he cannot find the answer at home, so he travels out into the great wide world. His journey to the Continent and home again leads him to places and encounters that he had never dreamed of. He ends up in France, and is first held capture in a snail farm. Luckily for him, and for us, he is rejected. However the experience opens up his mind, and a host of other questions are added to his why? He meets all kinds of friends that supply him with new knowledge. The moon, the wind, Mother Earth, the sun and the river tutor him about the role they play together, and teach him that everything is interconnected, and that we all share the same life. He learns of the harsh realities of life, but that it is human beings that have been busy changing the face of the world, and have consequently disturbed a vital balance in the short time they have been in existence. Can a mere snail help us each find a new respect for our fellow creatures, and open our eyes to the miracle of life that is right in front of us?
