Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who HQ brings you the stories behind the most well-known characters of our time. In this addition to the What Is the Story Of? series, young readers will get to know American icon Smokey Bear's history with the U.S. Forest Service and fire safety! Created by the U.S. Forest Service in 1944 in reaction to forest fires being used as attacks during World War II, Smokey Bear has been guiding Americans through fire safety and preparedness for nearly eighty years. This American black bear known for wearing a pair of blue jeans and a forest ranger hat has found himself in classrooms, on stamps, in cartoons, on lunchboxes, in comic strips, and even as a giant balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. In 1950, Smokey came to life when a real-life bear cub rescued from a fire in New Mexico was named Smokey and became a living version of the character. Young readers can find even more reasons to love the face of forest fire prevention in this book that tells his whole history.

Book Smokey Bear and the Great Wilderness

Download or read book Smokey Bear and the Great Wilderness written by Elliott Speer Barker and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1950, after a fire raged through an area in south-central New Mexico, a small bear cub was found clinging to a pine tree. The cub had suffered severe burns, and the fire fighters who rescued him were amazed that he could have survived such intense heat. So tiny he fit into a shoe box, the cub was taken to a veterinarian in Santa Fe and responded well to treatment. In time, fully recovered, he became a popular character in schools and social functions. Through the effort of Elliott S. Barker and others, the Bear was named Smokey and in time became a famous national symbol for forest fire prevention and wildlife conservation, eventually contributing to an increased awareness of the need for these measures. Also included in this book are stories about the author's experiences as Forest Supervisor, State Game Warden, and as Manager and Predator Warden for Vermejo Park in New Mexico. J. Frank Dobie said: "Barker writes exactly as he talks, and his talk is genuine. He talks of deer, elk, grizzlies, and mountain lions, and of people-women as well as men-who belong to the land." Barker was of pioneer stock, his parents having arrived in Sapello, New Mexico in a covered wagon and were among the early settlers of the Northern New Mexico wilderness. He was the author of many books.

Book excerpt: How does an intelligent wild bear manage life in captivity? This is the first novel about the real bear cub who survived a forest fire high in the New Mexican mountains to become the living representative of his namesake, Smokey Bear. Badly burned, alone and forlorn amidst the devastation after the fire, the cub is rescued by Game Warden Ray Bell. Smokey adapts to life in the home of Ray's family in Santa Fe, cavorting with the household puppy and cuddling with the four-year-old daughter. Before the little male bear becomes big enough to be dangerous, he must leave his human family. He is flown across the country to spend the rest of his long life at Washington's National Zoo. Authentic photographs and apt quotations enhance this heartwarming and bittersweet story, written for adults but with appeal for all ages.
