Book Smithian Early Triassic ammonoid faunas from northwestern Guangxi South China

Download or read book Smithian Early Triassic ammonoid faunas from northwestern Guangxi South China written by Arnaud Brayard and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highly fossiliferous succession of Smithian (Early Triassic) ammonoids from northwestern Guangxi (South China) provides a key equatorial record, at the boundary between Tethys and Panthalassa. After the end-Permian extinction, ammonoids reached their first major diversity peak during Smithian times, coupled with a marked contrast in their latitudinal distribution. This monograph contains a part of the fundamental taxonomic and biostratigraphic data of a more comprehensive research project addressing patterns of recovery in time and space of Early Triassic ammonoids and other marine clades, in conjunction with global paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes.

Book Smithian early Triassic Ammonoids from Northwestern Guangxi south China and Biogeographic Modelling of the Ammonoid Recovery After the Permian Triassic Mass Extinction

Download or read book Smithian early Triassic Ammonoids from Northwestern Guangxi south China and Biogeographic Modelling of the Ammonoid Recovery After the Permian Triassic Mass Extinction written by Arnaud Brayard and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Permian-Triassic crisis, more than 90% of marine species disappeared. Until then, the biotic recovery was often considered as very slow. In this context, the Early Triassic ammonoids represent a phylogenetically well constrained and well adapted to the study of the impact of climatic and oceanic conditions on the macroecological post-crisis dynamics. To understand the impacts of these parameters, we have elaborated a 2D model where the temperatures and currents force the geographical dispersal of a randomly generated clade. The fossil data indicate that the ammonoids are one of the first marine organisms to quickly and fully recover. The beginning of the Early Triassic is marked by a very weak latitudinal diversity gradient. A clear latitudinal diversity gradient progressively emerges during the Early Triassic, linked to a maximal latitudinal differentiation and a high level of endemicity of faunas, which entails increased steepness of the SST gradient.

Book Ammonoid Paleobiology From macroevolution to paleogeography

Download or read book Ammonoid Paleobiology From macroevolution to paleogeography written by Christian Klug and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume work is a testament to the abiding interest and human fascination with ammonites. We offer a new model to explain the morphogenesis of septa and the shell, we explore their habitats by the content of stable isotopes in their shells, we discuss the origin and later evolution of this important clade, and we deliver hypotheses on its demise. The Ammonoidea produced a great number of species that can be used in biostratigraphy and possibly, this is the macrofossil group, which has been used the most for that purpose. Nevertheless, many aspects of their anatomy, mode of life, development or paleobiogeographic distribution are still poorly known. Themes treated are biostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleoenvironment, paleobiogeography, evolution, phylogeny, and ontogeny. Advances such as an explosion of new information about ammonites, new technologies such as isotopic analysis, tomography and virtual paleontology in general, as well as continuous discovery of new fossil finds have given us the opportunity to present a comprehensive and timely "state of the art" compilation. Moreover, it also points the way for future studies to further enhance our understanding of this endlessly fascinating group of organisms.

Book The Triassic Timescale

Download or read book The Triassic Timescale written by Spencer G. Lucas and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2010 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mesozoic Era begins with the approximately 50-million-year-long Triassic Period, a major juncture in Earth history when the vast Pangaean supercontinent completed its assembly and began its fragmentation, and the global biota diversified and modern-ized after the end-Permian mass extinction, the most extensive biotic decimation of the Phanerozoic. The temporal ordering of geological and biotic events during Triassic time thus is critical to the interpretation of some unique and pivotal events in Earth his-tory. This temporal ordering is mostly based on the Triassic time-scale, which has been developed and refined for nearly two centu-ries. This book reviews the state of the art of the Triassic timescale and includes comprehensive analyses of Triassic radio-isotopic ages, magnetostratigraphy, isotope-based and cyclostratigraphic correlations and timescale -relevant marine and non-marine bio-stratigraphy.

Book A New Silurian Llandovery Telychian Sponge Assemblage from Gotland Sweden

Download or read book A New Silurian Llandovery Telychian Sponge Assemblage from Gotland Sweden written by Freek Rhebergen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A newly discovered, diverse sponge fauna of early Silurian age, is described from Gotland, Sweden. This is the first Silurian sponge assemblage known from Baltica, and the only diverse Llandoverian assemblage known worldwide. The fauna includes 20 genera and 29 species, of which three genera and six species are new. Eighteen species are new to Baltica. The fauna shows strong similarities to later Silurian assemblages in Arctic Canada, but one endemic species comprises ca. 50% of the fauna. The fauna shows that lithistid sponges recovered well from the late Ordovician extinction in some areas, and became widely spread in the early Silurian. In contrast, non-lithistid sponges like, such as hexactinellids, appear to have evolved rapidly during the Late Ordovician – early Silurian interval, and some modern groups probably originated in inshore habitats.
