Another important aspect highlighted in this report is the impact of non-technical considerations such as regulatory requirements and cost implications on choice of certain approaches over others. Such considerations can be decisive from a hardware design perspective especially in low-cost, low-power consumer electronics market.

Book excerpt: Due to ever increasing usage of wireless devices and data hungry applications, it has become necessary to improve the spectral efficiency of existing wireless networks. One way of improving spectral efficiency is to share the spectrum amongst different coexisting networks and serve multiple devices simultaneously. Spectrum sharing mechanisms for coexistence of a licensed network, such as LTE, with an unlicensed network, such as Wi-Fi, are being considered in the recent literature and standardizations. In order to enable the coexistence between licensed and unlicensed users, it is necessary to include interference mitigation techniques to protect the licensed primary users (PUs) from harmful interference. Typical interference mitigation mechanisms are based on spectrum sensing and cognitive radio (CR), wherein unlicensed secondary users (SUs) observe the spectrum and utilize it when licensed PUs are inactive. Thus, the SUs utilize empty time-slots in the shared spectrum to avoid the interference. The spectral efficiency can be further improved if the SUs are allowed to transmit concurrently with PUs by exploiting the spatial dimension provided by multiple antenna techniques. The underlay CR paradigm allows such coexistence where SUs transmit its signal in the same time-slots as PUs by exploiting the spatial and frequency resources in the network. In order to exploit the spatial dimension, SUs can utilize the location coordinates of PUs to steer its signal away from PUs to mitigate the interference. The SU transmitter can also employ multiple antenna techniques to serve a large number of devices. Further, the SUs can utilize frequency bands occupied by PUs by dynamically selecting the frequency band that provides the highest rate. In this work, we develop techniques for PU location estimation, spatial resource allocation and frequency band selection for SUs in underlay CR networks. We begin by considering the problem of estimation of PU location coordinates in a network of SUs in the presence of spectrally overlapped interference. A localization algorithm based on cyclostationary properties of the PU signal is proposed in order to mitigate the impact of the interference. The proposed scheme identifies and eliminates the SUs in the vicinity of the interferer thereby improving the localization accuracy. Next, we propose a low-complexity algorithm to solve a resource allocation and interference control problem in a network where secondary BS (SBS) is equipped with a large antenna array. The proposed algorithm selects maximum number of SUs and allocates power for downlink transmission from the SBS, while keeping the interference to PUs below a specified limit. It has been shown that the proposed low-complexity algorithm provides optimum solution if the number of antennas at the SBS is order of magnitude larger than the number of SUs and PUs in the network. Finally, we analyze power control and frequency band selection policies for a SU transmitter-receiver pair that can select one out of multiple available frequency band in each time-slot to maximize its achievable rate. We derive an expression for transmit power in a frequency band as a function of interference constraints, PU traffic statistics in the frequency band, and temporal correlation of channels. We show that instead of hopping to a different frequency band in each time-slot, the SU can stay on one frequency band in order to maximize its own rate while keeping the interference toward PUs to a predetermined level.

Book excerpt: The global trends for dramatic population growth and an ageing society are likely to increase the strain on scarce medical resources in the coming decades. The next generation of personal area networks, Wireless Body Area Networks (BANs), provide a promising solution to this problem with advantages of, e.g. high flexibility, low cost, location independence, real-time monitoring etc... Hence the use of BAN is becoming pervasive. However, the increasing number of active BAN units is a challenge as significant co-channel radio interference is generated, which often causes severe performance degradation and harms system reliability. Because of the difficulty of global coordination amongst multiple, coexisting and uncoordinated, BANs, due to significant dynamics, effective interference management schemes are urgently needed to enable reliable coexistence. Here the main theme is the investigation of the feasibility and efficiency of some co-channel interference mitigation schemes for BANs. The schemes we study in this thesis are based on the following: 1) cooperative communications with relays; 2) transmit power control; and 3) a cross layer design that integrates 1) and 2). Two types of power control methods are investigated: a) the first is a light-weight prediction-based power control method, which adaptively adjusts transmit power, at the sensors and relays, with respect to channel condition variations; b) the second method employs game theory and models the coexistence as a non-cooperative game. These techniques have been studied for other conventional wireless networks in the literature. However, there is very-limited work for radio interference mitigation for BANs. Another main contribution here is, instead of using channel models as presented in the literature, many open-access empirical body-centric channel measurements are used for the investigation of interference mitigation schemes proposed. These measurements contain subjects performing different ̀èveryday'' activities over many hundreds of hours in various environments. The use of the measurements in our study further enhances this by capturing factors that can significantly influence the on-body and inter-body channels. These factors include variations in body shapes and sizes of different subjects, subjects' local and spatial movement, body orientation and the effect of the surrounding environment. The performance, of the proposed schemes, is compared with traditional single-hop star-topology BANs for the same coexisting scenarios and BANs employing other conventional power control methods commonly used in the literature. We analyse their effectiveness with respect to first- and second-order statistics, particularly outage probability, level crossing rate, and average outage/non-outage duration, of the received packets' SINR at the hub of a BAN. The power consumption of using the proposed schemes is also compared with other schemes. Finally, it is shown that employing relays and the proposed power control schemes can greatly enhance a BAN's ability to mitigate co-channel radio interference. The use of a non-cooperative power control game enforces BANs to minimise the interference they create in the coexisting environment while maintaining reliability requirements. Importantly, there is fast convergence to a socially optimum outcome. Overall, there is significant impetus to using the schemes proposed here in future, practical, BAN implementations, as elucidated in this dissertation.

Book excerpt: In my dissertation, we focus on the wireless network coexistence problem with advanced physical-layer techniques. For the first part, we study the problem of Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN)s coexisting with cross-technology interference (CTI). WBANs face the RF cross-technology interference (CTI) from non-protocol-compliant wireless devices. Werst experimentally characterize the adverse effect on BAN caused by the CTI sources. Then we formulate a joint routing and power control (JRPC) problem, which aims at minimizing energy consumption while satisfying node reachability and delay constraints. We reformulate our problem into a mixed integer linear programing problem (MILP) and then derive the optimal results. A practical JRPC protocol is then proposed. For the second part, we study the coexistence of heterogeneous multi-hop networks with wireless MIMO. We propose a new paradigm, called cooperative interference mitigation (CIM), which makes it possible for disparate networks to cooperatively mitigate the interference to/from each other to enhance everyone's performance. We establish two tractable models to characterize the CIM behaviors of both networks by using full IC (FIC) and receiver-side IC (RIC) only. We propose two bi-criteria optimization problems aiming at maximizing both networks' throughput, while cooperatively canceling the interference between them based on our two models. In the third and fourth parts, we study the coexistence problem with MIMO from a different point of view: the incentive of cooperation. We propose a novel two-round game framework, based on which we derive two networks' equilibrium strategies and the corresponding closed-form utilities. We then extend our game-theoretical analysis to a general multi-hop case, specifically the coexistence problem between primary network and multi-hop secondary network in the cognitive radio networks domain. In the final part, we study the benefits brought by reconfigurable antennas (RA). We systematically exploit the pattern diversity and fast reconfigurability of RAs to enhance the throughput of MWNs. Werst propose a novel link-layer model that captures the dynamic relations between antenna pattern, link coverage and interference. Based on our model, a throughput optimization framework is proposed by jointly considering pattern selection and link scheduling, which is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programming problem.

Frequency hopping (FH) is widely used for radio transmission in such networks due to its low probability of detection/interception. With the increasing deployment, multiple networks occupying overlapping frequency bands are likely to coexist in a physical environment, especially in tactical operations, emergency situations, or dense-populated areas. Consequently co-channel interference due to frequency collisions can become a major performance limiting factor. In this project, we developed a novel interference mitigation technique based on multidimensional frequency estimation coupled with the expectation-maximization principle, which effectively resolves collisions among non-collaborative networks, thus enabling robust coexistence of multiple FH networks. To deal with possible receiver-transmitter mismatch, we also designed a low-complexity model order variation detection method. Novel multidimensional frequency estimation algorithms are also investigated.
