A partir de este modelo se han desarrollado unos objetivos que se han agrupado en una serie de servicios, para los que se han descrito las principales tecnologías que disponemos en la actualidad, destacando la aportación de las TIC y NTIC. Obteniendo una serie de plataformas de servicios, que se deben integrar y conectar entre sí, facilitando que el ciudadano forme parte activa del proceso de gestión de su ciudad. Finalmente, se analiza el grado de implantación del modelo Smart City a nivel mundial a través de casos prácticos y de las experiencias de algunas ciudades. Este libro es el primer tomo de una serie que tiene como objetivo profundizar en el concepto de la Smart City.

Una ciudad inteligente, o smart city, es aquella que aglutina una serie de conceptos basados en la sostenibilidad centrados, fundamentalmente, en tres ámbitos básicos: medioambiental, económico y social, y que busca la mejora de la calidad de vida de sus habitantes. Como se verá a lo largo del libro, la definición de smart city es muy amplia y abarca muchos conceptos. El denominador común de todos ellos será el uso de las TIC como elemento básico que servirá para definir las arquitecturas y los procesos comunes para establecer sistemas inteligentes que acaben aportando valor al ciudadano y al entorno.

A city’s status rests on three dimensions: (1) political impetus, which is the result of citizens’ participation and the public administration’s agenda; (2) applications derived from technological advances (especially in ICT); and (3) cooperation between public and private initiatives in business development and entrepreneurship. These three dimensions determine which resources are necessary to create smart cities. But a smart city, ideal in the way it channels and resolves technological, social and economic-growth issues, requires many additional elements to function at a high-performance level, such as culture (an environment that empowers and engages citizens) and physical infrastructure designed to foster competition and collaboration, encourage new ideas and actions, and set the stage for new business creation.
