Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Smallpox and Vaccination Smallpox, perhaps more than any other disease, has inspired fear and terror in the popular mind because of its loathsome appearance, its extreme contagiousness and its disfiguring consequences. Lord Macauley's Description of Smallpox. - Lord Macauley, writing of the untimely death from smallpox in 1694 of the young and beautiful Queen Mary of England, gives us a powerful pen picture of the ravages of this pestilence: That disease, over which science has since achieved a succession of glorious and beneficient victories, was then the most terrible of all the ministers of death. The havoc of the plague has been far more rapid, but the plague has visited our shores only once or twice within living memory; and the smallpox was always present, filling the churchyards with corpses, tormenting with constant fears all whom it had nor yet stricken, leaving on those whose lives it spared the hideous traces of its power, turning the babe into a changeling at which the mother shuddered, and making the eyes and cheeks of the betrothed maiden objects of horror to the lover. Blindness from Smallpox. - During certain periods in England, a very large percentage of the people were pockmarked. Ben Jonson, the Elizabethan dramatist, wrote: Envious and foule disease, could there not be, One beautie in an age and free from thee. Not only did the disease destroy life, disfigure and maim, but it was at one time the most common cause of blindness. The early records of the London Asylum for the Indigent Blind showed that two thirds of the inmates had lost their sight as a result of smallpox. Smallpox Adages. - Smallpox was a great scourge before the introduction of vaccination. In London during the eighteenth century it caused one twelfth of all deaths. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Small-Pox and Vaccination It will thus be seen that, just before an epidemic, a large proportion of Children in some large towns may be unprotected by vaccination. In Liverpool the percentage not finally accounted for is comparatively small, being about 5 per cent. Again, those who have escaped the epidemic owing to 'good vaccination lose some of this immunity as years pass, or in the words of the late Dr. Bond, of Gloucester, become de-vaccinated and so provide suitable material for the next outbreak, when the virulence of the disease may succeed in breaking down a comparative insusceptibility. The liability of a population to a small-pox epidemic therefore may be measured by its density at susceptible ages. Nittinger's Evils of Vaccination Why do even physicians resort to quack nostrums, or to such most ridiculous hallucinations as that of Hunter's inhalations of vitiated air in consumption? No science has yet been degraded by its own vaga ries so deeply as the Medical. Every science develops itself in three periods the first is that of blind faith; the second, that of smart sophistication and the third, that of sober in vestigation. The religious period of science, for instance, in regard to the treatment of small-pox in later times, was vaccination; the Sophistic period, re vaccination, scar theory, and a vaccine table system. Let us now solve the last problem; for as long as we renounce experience, which creates knowledge, we ban ish real science, (liebig, ) and favor the ascendancy of every trumpet humbug. In the present paper I purpose giving, in a more detailed form, the statistics of a larger number, and from these figures endeavour to show the influence exercised by vaccination, age, sex, and occupation on the rate of mortality in small-pox. Book The Eradication of Smallpox

Download or read book The Eradication of Smallpox written by H. Bazin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Simply, and with great humanity, The Eradication of Smallpox tells the story of smallpox - it's origins, the horror of the disease, and the millions of people killed or disfigured by it. During the 18th and 19th centuries, it is estimated that one out of every ten people died from the disease; some say one out of every seven. Smallpox attacked very young children in particular. The story progresses with the practice of variolation, the life of Edward Jenner who first proposed 'vaccination' with cow pox vaccine (little James Phipps was the first person ever vaccinated in this way), the years of debate about the efficacy of this novel method, and the later worldwide initiatives to rid the planet of this horrific disease. In 1979, the story culminates in the only total eradication of an infectious disease that mankind has ever accomplished. This year celebrates the 20th anniversary of this momentous achievement. In the intervening years, debate has raged about what we should do with the remaining smallpox viral stocks. Do we destroy them, so they can't fall into the hands of bioterrorists, or do we maintain them, in case they may be of use in some unexpected way, for therapeutic purposes? These questions are thoroughly discussed in the book. Covers the background, history and origin of smallpox, and brings the story up to the present day Gives full and interesting details of Jenner's life, and tells how this humble country doctor brought about a revolution in vaccination Includes many quotes from historical figures Features 120 high quality photographs, many originating from unique historical plates in the author's private collection Includes new research data Provides new views on the eradication and destruction of smallpox
