Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the Kenora Thistles become, against all odds, the smallest team and the smallest town ever to win the Stanley Cup? This famously scrappy hockey team was founded in the rough and tumble town of Kenora, Ontario, at the end of the 19th century. A decade later, playing far away from home, in Montreal, the fiery teenagers whom the Montreal Star dubbed "the fastest that have ever been seen anywhere on ice" out-skated and out-played their older, more experienced opponents to win the coveted hockey championship trophy. Sports novelist John Danakas and journalist Richard Brignall team up to tell the true story of the ultimate underdogs in this a little-known chapter from Canadian sports history. Book The Marriage Bargain A Small Town Southern Romance

Download or read book The Marriage Bargain A Small Town Southern Romance written by Yuwanda Black and published by Inkwell Editorial Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You will accept my proposal, Daria. You will become my wife.” “And what makes you so sure about your proposition?” I said. God I wanted to knock that smug smile off his addictively handsome face. “Because you have no choice. So why fight it? Besides, it’s only a year. What have you got to lose?” Everything! I wanted to scream. My hopes. My dreams. Genuine affection. Real love. I’d be giving up all of that if I agreed to become his wife — even if it was only for one year. What would be left of me after? I had dreamed of being Glory Falkner’s wife a thousand times since I first met him at ten years old. But never once had my fantasy played out like this. And that’s because it is fantasy, a tiny voice whispered in my head. I turned around to face him. “We all have choices Glory.” “In theory, yes. In reality, no. In your world, you may not have realized that fundamental truth. But you live in my world now.” “And what world is that?” I asked, my arms folded across my chest. “The real world,” he said, reaching over and tucking a tendril of hair behind my ear. “In the real world dearest Daria, only those with power have choices.” I could feel the thumping of my pulse on the side of my neck where his hand had come to rest. He was so sure. So confident. And no wonder; tears stung the back of my eyes as I realized the truth of what he said. I don’t think I’ve ever hated another human being as much as I hated him at that moment. *** “Alright Glory, you have yourself a wife. But if you ever lay a finger on me, you will regret it. That I can promise you,” I finished, my eyes never leaving his. His thumb caressed the side of my neck, the pulsing of my vein mocking my words. “I like my women ready, willing and able Daria. I don’t see you qualifying on any of those fronts. So don’t worry darling, your virtue is safe with me.” *** I watched Glory’s broad, ram-rod straight figure disappear through the large glass door. I’d managed to save my beloved art gallery from bankruptcy, but at what cost? Would my heart pay the price for something much more valuable?

Book Gender Fantasy and Realism in American Literature

Download or read book Gender Fantasy and Realism in American Literature written by Alfred Habegger and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of the 19th-century American novel, the author demonstrates the imaginative continuity between sentimental and realistic fiction and sets out to establish that realism is the central and preeminent literary type in America, a mode grounded in the tradition of women's popular fiction which shaped the nation's reading habits in the mid-19th century. He examines this feminine literature, with its common technique of symbolizing deeper social conflicts through patterns of courtship, marriage, and gender roles. Contends that Howells and James owe much of their fictional domain to the often-disparaged household dramas of these female precursors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "People often forget the road to greatness is rarely a smooth ride. The Other Side of Glory reminds us of the enormous power of persistence and what can be achieved when a group of young athletes takes the journey and finds that a 'team-first attitude' can navigate the rocky road that leads to the ultimate prize." —Tim Miles, head men's basketball coach, San Jose State University. A compelling story of teamwork and commitment in the competitive world of girls' high school basketball When the Waconia Wildcats embarked on the 2019 season, their motto was simple: FINISH. It was a mandate to follow through on every play at the basket and a promise to address unfinished business from the previous season, when a one-point loss was all that kept them from reaching the state tournament for the first time in school history. The Other Side of Glory is a sensitive and riveting portrait of youth basketball in small-town Minnesota, a world familiar to many but brimming with its own characters, quirks, and challenges. Readers will get to know the players—girls with nicknames like Sauce, Salsa, Raptor, and Snake—as they navigate high school life, struggle to accept their roles on the team, wrestle with self-doubt, and ultimately band together with the goal of vanquishing a 45-year legacy of coming up short. Inspirational and relatable, this is a must-read for athletes, coaches, and parents everywhere.

Book Bearing Witness to African American Literature

Download or read book Bearing Witness to African American Literature written by Bernard W. Bell and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary, code-switching, critical collection by revisionist African American scholar and activist Bernard W. Bell. Bearing Witness to African American Literature: Validating and Valorizing Its Authority, Authenticity, and Agency collects twenty-three of Bernard W. Bell’s lectures and essays that were first presented between 1968 and 2008. From his role in the culture wars as a graduate student activist in the Black Studies Movement to his work in the transcultural Globalization Movement as an international scholar and Fulbright cultural ambassador in Spain, Portugal, and China, Bell’s long and inspiring journey traces the modern institutional origins and the contemporary challengers of African American literary studies. This volume is made up of five sections, including chapters on W. E. B. DuBois’s theory and trope of double consciousness, an original theory of residually oral forms for reading the African American novel, an argument for an African Americentric vernacular and literary tradition, and a deconstruction of the myths of the American melting pot and literary mainstream. Bell considers texts by contemporary writers like Toni Morrison, Alice Walker, William Styron, James Baldwin, and Jean Toomer, as well as works by Mark Twain, Frederick Douglas, and William Faulkner. In a style that ranges from lyricism to the classic jeremiad, Bell emphasizes that his work bears the imprint of many major influences, including his mentor, poet and scholar Sterling A. Brown, and W. E. B. DuBois. Taken together, the chapters demonstrate Bell’s central place as a revisionist African American literary and cultural theorist, historian, and critic. Bearing Witness to African American Literature will be an invaluable introduction to major issues in the African American literary tradition for scholars of American, African American, and cultural studies.

Book excerpt: In Glory's Shadow explores the history of The Citadel, an institution set on preserving tradition in the face of profound change. Established as protection against slave insurrections feared by the white minority of Charleston, South Carolina, a generation later The Citadel was a school of privilege for young white men. Through two world wars it grew in size and reputation, proudly providing the United States with (male) military leaders, paying little heed to what was happening in the country around it. In 1993, when the school rescinded Shannon Faulkner's admission because of her gender, a landmark legal battle ensued. Faulkner won, and although she faced vicious harassment and left after a week, The Citadel was forced to reform: nearly 30 women have graduated since her brief time at The Citadel. In Glory's Shadow is an engrossing and illuminating look at this pivotal event in military history and the history of women.
